Tens of Thousands of Pro-Life People March Against Abortion in Rome

Tens of thousands of people gathered in the streets of Rome on Sunday to call for protections for every human life during Italy’s 6th annual March for Life.

Breitbart reports more than 30,000 pro-lifers attended the march, which began at Santa Maria in Cosmedin and ended at Saint Peter’s Square where Pope Francis greeted and encouraged the crowd. The theme was “For Life: Without Compromise.”

Abortion is legal during the first trimester in Italy and has been since 1978. Virginia Coda Nunziante, founder of the Italian March for Life, said almost 6 million babies have been aborted in Italy since abortion became legal.

“Abortion was illegal in Italy until 1978, when the ‘Legge 194’ abrogated prior legislation, legalizing abortion during the first 90 days of pregnancy. Many of the marchers Sunday carried banners urging that Law 194 ‘be aborted,’” according to Breitbart.

The march was not specifically a Catholic event, though many participants were Catholic, according to the National Catholic Register. The event was lively and peaceful, with music, singing and activities for children, according to the report. People of all ages from various cultures and backgrounds participated, including representatives from 26 countries, NCR reports. Many people carried balloons and banners that read, “Abortion: Already 1 Billion Victims,” and “Yes to Medicine, No to Euthanasia.”

Mario Adinolfi, who is running for mayor of Rome, attended the march and told the Register that life is a universal right that people must fight for.

“This March is very important,” Adinolfi said. “Here in Rome we have very dangerous statistics: for every one person born, two Romans die. So we have a really crazy situation with one 105,000 abortions per year in Italy. With these statistics, Italy dies. We’re going to be invaded ‘from below’, let’s say. So we need now to do something important in the political sphere, to stop putting abortion aside and say: ‘There isn’t a right to abortion, there’s a right to be born.’”
