Reflection from a Pro-Life Millennial In Philadelphia

Photo courtesy of CatholicPhilly.com Taken on January 2014. I am the one kneeling.

by Mickey Kelly

This month marks eight years since I attended the March for Life (Though I missed two because of bad weather). January also marked six years since I prayed in front of the largest non Planned Parenthood affiliate abortion facility in Philadelphia. I can remember the day quite well. It was a bitter cold morning.

Before that I attended some vigils at the Planned Parenthood at 12th and Locust Streets in downtown Philadelphia and one vigil at the Planned Parenthood on Comly Rd, which helped prompt me that I "needed to do more in the pro life movement." Slowly the seeds that were planted began to grow. It wasn't until I attended the Stand Up for Life Dinner in 2010 when one of the award recipients was Guy Vacca, my neighbor and fellow member of my Knights of Columbus council. Because of his 20 years of service which also involved with monthly vigil at Gosnell's "House of Horrors", it was the spark I needed to get out of my comfort zone and be a warrior for life.

What I noticed when I first got my feet wet were not many of my peers were willing to get out of bed before dawn, no breakfast in your system, sometimes with little to no sleep and pray for the unborn. I was surrounded by many seasoned pro lifers with one including my neighbors Guy and Ron. It was intimidating at first, but I rolled with it. As I walked away from the experience, something told me to go back.

One person that stood out to me was the late John Patrick Stanton. I remember seeing him going twenty yards on a small street, pleading for the life of the unborn children, taking mockery from escorts or even the patients, and shouting from the top of his lungs while holding a model 10 week fetus as the client walks into the doors, "Mercy". Mr. Stanton would play a huge role on me in the three years I have spent with him through rallies, weekly vigils, and the annual dinners.

I remember times I was there when we had Generation Life there and many of the local high schoolers. One particular was when some of the students struggled to know what they had to do when I jumped in and they wanted him to lead the praying the rest of the remaining mystery of the rosary. One rally the group hosted along with the PLU was with 300 young people from Omaha and Lincoln Nebraska who stopped to pray before heading to DC for the March for Life. One speaker talked about how our culture is hungry for the truth, not the counterfeit.
I also met a woman who changed her mind about abortion and described abortion facilities as "chop shops" during a #ProtestPP rally in 2015.

Me with Jewels Green. Summer 2015

As the years went on, I became a regular presence. Some of the seasoned pro-lifers made a remark that they wish "more young men and women like me were out here praying". That comment floored me. Recently I told seminarians I passed during the recent march for life that they were the future and one replied, "You are the future." Millennials need to unplug from their gadgets, fast from their morning coffee, and be boots on the ground for our generation.

The best way for young people to get involved is to break out of their comfort zone. One is to organize a group, big or small, and go pray at the vigil near them for one hour if not more, learn the proper words when sidewalk counseling with love and mercy, and be a peaceful presence. I encourage seasoned pro-lifers to take young pro-lifers under their wings, train them, and show them by your example how they are the future and are needed to save the lives of others.

Pro-Life Midwife Sues Swedish Healthcare Officials

Pro-life Swedish midwife Ellinor Grimmark

By Dave Andrusko
National Right to Life

When last we reported on Swedish midwife Ellinor Grimmark, she had just been told yet again she must assist with abortions in order to be employed.

In November 2015, the district court of Jönköping County Council found that Ms. Grimmark’s right to freedom of conscience had not been violated and awarded substantial costs against her. Grimmark has been denied employment by three different medical clinics in the district of Jönköping because she would not assist with abortions.

At the time Grimmark said she planned to appeal the decision.

Fast-forward to 2017 and Ms. Grimmark is suing healthcare officials for discrimination. Grimmark is being assisted by Alliance Defending Freedom International.

According to an update posted at ADF International’s webpage, the Labour Court of Appeal was scheduled to hear the case January 24-27.
“Being required to participate in abortions should not be a requirement for employment as a midwife,” said Robert Clarke, Director of European Advocacy for ADF International. “The desire to protect life is what leads many midwives and nurses to enter the medical profession in the first place. Employers should respect that desire and look to safeguard the moral convictions of their staff.”
In its expert brief in support of Grimmark’s appeal, ADF International highlighted the protection for freedom of conscience that exists under international law.

Vice-President Mike Pence Invites Pro-Life Leaders to the White House, Obama Had Abortion Activists

National Right to Life President Carol Tobias

Just ahead of the March for Life, pro-life leaders received a special invitation to visit with Vice President Mike Pence at the White House.

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, told Breitbart her invitation to the White House on the eve of the annual pro-life march brought her hope.
“I was so honored to have been invited to the White House the day before the March for Life to meet Vice President Mike Pence, who I have worked with years in the pro-life movement,” Hawkins told the news outlet. “We have no better ally as pro-lifers and as I’ve said before, Mike Pence was working to defund Planned Parenthood before it was cool.”

National Right to Life President Carol Tobias was another of the many pro-life leader to attend the Vice President’s event.

Pence is the former governor of Indiana who has a longtime pro-life position and a lengthy pro-life record putting pro-life legislation into law and voting pro-life as a member of Congress.
“Let me be clear: People who know me well know I’m pro-life, and I don’t apologize for it,” he said previously. “I want to live to see the day that we put the sanctity of life back at the center of American law, and we send Roe v. Wade to the ash heap of history, where it belongs.”
President Donald Trump’s stance on abortion was less clear initially, having previously described himself as pro-choice. He said a friend changed his mind about abortion, and he now is pro-life.

Trump’s selection of Pence and other pro-life leaders for his administration, his quick action to reinstate the Mexico City Policy to prohibit taxpayer funding to groups that promote or provide abortions overseas, and more have given the movement hope that the new president will work to protect unborn babies and moms from abortion.

Black Pastor: “People Cry for Harambe, But They Have no Love for Babies Killed Every Day” in Abortions

By Micaiah Bilger
Life News

Bishop Vincent Mathews Jr. of the Church of God in Christ issued a strong call to Americans to stand up against the injustice of abortion on Friday during the March for Life.

Mathews, a leader in the predominantly black denomination, led the prayer that kicked off the march, which drew hundreds of thousands of pro-lifers to the nation’s capital on Friday. Before praying, Mathews talked about how the abortion industry targets the black community, and how churches like his are working to bring about a change.

“But as you stand here, you’re protecting black Americans and Africans around the world,” Mathews said. “My people are being hunted like animals. People cry for Harambe, but they have no love for us as we’re being killed every day. Enough is enough. It’s time to rise up. It’s our time to save lives. The slaughter shall end.”

Abortions are disproportionately high in the African American community. According to the National Vital Statistics Report from June 2012, African American women experience an average of 1.6 times more pregnancies than white women, but have five times more abortions during their lifetime.

Another study found that 79 percent of Planned Parenthood surgical abortion facilities are within walking distance of black and Hispanic neighborhoods.

Mathews said the black community is beginning to rise up against the injustice of abortion toward the unborn. He said his 6.5 million-member denomination is promoting the life issues and encouraging its members to adopt babies who otherwise might be aborted.

“We’re looking forward to making sure President Trump holds up his end of the bargain – his promises,” she said. “Defunding Planned Parenthood of our federal taxpayer dollars, appointing pro-life Supreme Court justices, codifying the Hyde Amendment law so our taxpayer dollars don’t fund abortions, and banning late-term 20-week abortions.”

How Gosnell’s House of Horrors Made Me Pro-Life

by Ann McElhinney
The Daily Signal

I never trusted or liked pro-life activists.

Even at college I thought them too earnest and too religious. I thought the shocking images they showed were manipulative. I distinctly remember my argument: A heart transplant is gross to look at, too. I don’t want to look at pictures of that, and heart transplants are brilliant. So back off, pro-lifers with your scary pictures.

I also didn’t trust the provenance of the pictures; I was sure they had been photoshopped. If the anti-abortion position was so strong, it should be able to argue without resorting to emotionally manipulating its audience with fraudulent horror pictures.

Once you have this mentality, it’s very easy to completely dismiss pro-life activists. And the universities of the world are teeming with young people just like that young person I once was.

Fast forward to April 2013 and Kermit Gosnell’s trial in Philadelphia, when everything changed.

Why I March – An Adoption Story

Clarke Forsythe, Acting President & Senior Counsel
Americans United for Life

As thousands come to Washington, D.C. to brave the January weather, pro-life men, women and children will join together to share our love for mothers and their unborn children, and to pledge to work for a world in which everyone is welcomed in life and protected in law. While our goals are similar, our motivations to stand for life are our own story.

Our newest AUL staff attorney Deanna Wallace, in a USA Today article, shared her story, why SHE marches for Life, writing about her experience as one of three children in foster care.

All of this sounds pretty horrible -- a lot of suffering, a lot of neglect, and little love. Would it be better for these three little children to never have been born? After all, then they would never suffer from neglect, never be hungry, never be hurt, never have to cry themselves to sleep. Many abortion advocates will talk about how it would be better to abort than to bring unwanted children into this world, and would argue that the fate of these three children proves their point…

But this is only half of their story.

They are adopted, all of them at the same time, by two amazing parents. Their parents love and adore them … Baby #3 went to law school and is now an attorney with the nation’s leading pro-life legal team at Americans United for Life. She gets to spend every day helping state legislators and policy groups pass laws that protect other unwanted children, giving them the chance to overcome the circumstances of their birth, just like she did. Baby #3 is me.

This is my family. This is my story. This is why I march.

Wallace joins AUL’s team fighting to protect mothers and their unborn children from abortion industry abuses at the state level and where we are energized by what may be possible at the federal level in light of the new administration.

This week I have a piece at Human Life Review looking at the high stakes arena of the Supreme Court where we hope to see Roe v. Wade reconsidered, given its horrific impact on women and the unborn as well as its poor legal reasoning.

I noted, “If everything were to fall into place quickly, and Justice Scalia and a pro-abortion justice were replaced by “pro-life” justices, it’s plausible to conceive of a Roe test case arriving at the Supreme Court within four years. It would be against overwhelming odds, however, because nothing has fallen into place quickly for the cause for life since the 1973 Roe decision.”

But with news of a pending announcement of a Supreme Court pick from President Trump, we have a lot to look forward to at the high court. And AUL will be front and center making the case for Life.

Whatever you’re reason for supporting mothers and their unborn children, we appreciate your commitment to helping us fight for life in legislatures and courtrooms. And together, we can enjoy new victories for those most vulnerable.

Seven Powerful Quotes From ‘Jane Roe’ of Roe v. Wade

By Sarah Terzo
Live Action News

“You read about me in history books, but now I am dedicated to spreading the truth about preserving the dignity of all human life from natural conception to natural death.”
Norma McCorvey, also known as “Jane Roe” of Roe v. Wade, was the plaintiff that attorneys, Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee, used in the Texas court case that struck down all laws against abortion throughout the United States. Today, McCorvey is pro-life.

1) “The entire basis for Roe v. Wade was built upon false assumptions.”

In an affidavit McCorvey submitted to the District Court of New Jersey in 2000, she says:

Virtually the entire basis for Roe v. Wade was built upon false assumptions. No meaningful trial to determine the real facts was ever held.

The misrepresentations and deceptions that plagued Roe v. Wade are presented to this Court …. These facts, which were neither disclosed to me in 1970 nor to the plaintiffs of this case before they had an abortion, are critical for understanding the issues involved. …we obtained a decision in Roe v. Wade based upon what abortion advocates wanted women to be able to do, not what women were truly capable of.

2) “I didn’t know during the Roe v. Wade case that the life of a human being was terminated.”

McCorvey became pregnant during a low point in her life. She was homeless and living in a public park, and her other two children were being raised by others. A lawyer she was speaking to about adoption referred her to Weddington and Coffee.

The lawyers allegedly fawned over McCorvey, taking her out to eat and giving her lots of attention. They complained about being unable to find the perfect plaintiff for their case to make abortion legal. They told McCorvey that she was the ideal case. According to McCorvey:

They said yes, “You’re white. You’re young, pregnant, and you want an abortion.” At that time, I didn’t know their full intent. Only that they wanted to make abortion legal and they thought I’d be a good plaintiff. I came for the food, and they led me to believe that they could help me get an abortion.

During our meeting, they questioned me, “Norma don’t you think that abortion should be legal?” Unsure, I responded that I did not know. In fact, I did not know what the term “abortion” really meant. Back in 1970, no one discussed abortion. It was taboo, and so too was the subject of abortion. The only thing I knew about the word was in the context of war movies. I had heard the word “abort” when John Wayne was flying his plane and ordered the others to “Abort the mission.” I knew “abort” meant that they were “going back”. “Abortion”, to me, meant “going back” to the condition of not being pregnant.

I never looked the word up in the dictionary until after I had already signed the affidavit. I was very naive. For their part, my lawyers lied to me about the nature of abortion. Weddington convinced me that “It’s just a piece of tissue. You just missed your period.” I didn’t know during the Roe v. Wade case that the life of a human being was terminated.

3) “The courts…I feel used me to justify legalization of terminating of the lives of over 35 million babies.”

McCorvey trusted her lawyers, and signed the affidavit of Roe v. Wade without reading it. Knowing little about abortion procedures, McCorvey believed Weddington when she told her that abortion was removing “a bit of tissue.” McCorvey explains why she later felt exploited:

March for Life 2017: Photos from Washington, DC’s Pro-Life Rally

Blogger's note: Voices for the Unborn would like to thank all the children, teens, adults, and seniors who came from all over America to participate in the 2017 March for Life.

Your sacrifice and prayerful witness will turn hearts who believe the lies of Planned Parenthood to the Truth. Your presence in front of the Supreme Court building, where the fate of helpless, voiceless babies in the womb was decided in 1973, did not go unnoticed. Those who serve in the Congress, the Senate, and especially the Supreme Court saw your presence and heard your voices for those who have no voice.

We pray that in 2017 babies will, once again, be safe within the shelter of their mothers' wombs. May human life from the womb to natural death be ensconced, not only in our laws, but in our hearts, in accordance with God's laws.

The 2017 March for Life saw thousands of pro-life demonstrators rally at the National Mall in Washington, DC, spurred on by encouraging messages from newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump and appearances by his top surrogates. Vice President Mike Pence became the first VP ever to address the crowd, while Trump’s winning campaign manager Kellyanne Conway headlined the event.

Reporters from Breitbart News were also in attendance at the 44th annual March for Life, capturing scenes from the crowd. See those images and photos from news wires below:
