Hospitals Offer Safe Haven for Abandoned Infants

This summer a newborn baby was found dead in a restaurant bathroom in eastern Pennsylvania.

This fall, police found a dead baby in a teenager’s shopping bag after catching her shoplifting in Manhattan.  The teen said she had given birth a few days before and didn’t know what to do with the baby.

Women need to know that there is a place they can take their newborn baby if they can’t take care of him/her.

In Pennsylvania, the Safe Haven Law allows a mother to drop off her newborn at any hospital, no questions asked.  Some hospitals even have a crib in their lobby for the baby.  The baby will be examined by a doctor.  Then the county children and youth agency will find a family to take care of the baby.
