Heartbreak turned to utter surprise for a British couple when a hospital discovered that their supposedly miscarried unborn baby was still alive.

Elizabeth Stevens, 36, said the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel recently told her that her unborn baby had miscarried, the Daily Mail reports. She was bleeding early in her pregnancy, and doctors determined that she had lost her unborn child.

Doctors referred her for a surgical abortion procedure to remove her dead baby’s body from her womb, Stevens said. But when the hospital postponed Stevens’ surgery because of an emergency situation, she called another hospital to ask if they would perform it, the report states. The Queen’s Hospital in Essex agreed.

Then, a miracle happened. The second hospital discovered that Stevens’ unborn baby was not dead. The Sun reports Queen’s Hospital staff detected a faint heartbeat coming from inside her womb – bringing renewed hope to Stevens and her partner.

Here’s more from the report:

They told Ms Stevens that she had choriodecidual haematoma, which is why she was bleeding. Now the couple, who are from Benfleet in Essex, are demanding answers from the Royal London Hospital.
Speaking to The Sun Online, Mr Fowler said:
"How can they get it so completely wrong? They nearly killed my unborn baby. Royal London was about to remove a perfectly healthy baby. I want an explanation."
Stevens currently is seven weeks pregnant. Her unborn baby appears to be ok. She said she and her partner filed a complaint against the London hospital.
“It’s a lot to take in, one doctor says it’s not fine, and the other one says it’s fine,” Stevens said.
