“My first granddaughter would have been six by now”: The scars left by an abortion, from a Grandmother’s perspective

“If my story persuades just one family to seek counselling–and to be prepared for the reality of abortion–then I feel I am right to have spoken out.”

Does this show my Baby Boomer mentality, or what? The first time I read “Eyewitness to abortion” —a story from an unnamed grandmother (we’ll call her “Gladys”), as told Amanda Cable of the Daily Mail—it escaped me that (guess what?) I am a grandparent.

But when I re-read the story, it struck me like a bolt of lightning that grandparents are the “elephant in the room” in the abortion context. We rarely, if ever, get discussed and it’s usually a criticism from a pro-abortion reporter about how we tried to “interfere.”

Let’s back up a step. Pro-lifers know with every fiber in their bodies that taking the life of an innocent unborn child can never be a “private” decision. There are fathers involved and far more often than we realize the child has siblings. But these little ones have two sets of grandparents as well.

Frankly, I honestly can’t begin to imagine the horror and the sense of helplessness. Your grandchild is about to be obliterated by the child you hoped and prayed you’d raised to honor life, even—especially—in the tough times.

“Gladys’” story out to be read in its entirety here.

But if you can’t, let me quote just a few passages. The story begins….

My first granddaughter would have been six by now. I often watch children in the local playground and wonder what she would have been like. Other times, at night, I dream about her vividly, and know the answer.

Blonde-haired, blue-eyed and with a shy smile. Time and time again, I dream that she has just been born, and as she is handed to me, I name her Katie. Just as my heart is about to burst with joy, I wake up and realise that she does not exist.

I shall never know my granddaughter because her life was extinguished before it even had a chance to begin.
