Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on remarks made today by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam:
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, following the lead of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, is not content to promote the killing of children in the womb through term. He wants, as Cuomo has already sanctioned, the killing of children who survive an abortion.
When asked about a bill by Democrat Kathy Tran that would allow women going into labor to abort their child, Northam said he was just fine with that.
"If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that's what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother."
It is so thoughtful of Gov. Northam to assure us that the baby would be "kept comfortable" before they put him down or let him die.
Here's an early 19th century analogy.
"The slave would be resuscitated if that's what the master and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between lawmakers and the owner."
The Democratic Party is fast becoming the party of death. Every Democrat running for president, including those who may run, should be asked whether they agree with Northam. This is a defining moment. They should also be asked who else they think does not merit the most basic of human rights.

The 163 Catholics in the new Congress are split on abortion: almost all Republicans are pro-life and almost all Democrats are abortion-rights advocates.
For incumbents, we checked their voting record as scored by NARAL and National Right to Life. Typically, those who received a 100% NARAL score garnered a 0% rating from National Right to Life (which would be most Democrats), and vice versa (which would be most Republicans).
For Freshmen, we checked their stated positions on abortion, and the endorsements they received from pro-life and abortion-rights groups.
There were a few notable exceptions. Among them are Rep. Daniel Lipinski, a Democrat from Illinois: he received a 51% rating from NARAL and a 75% score from National Right to Life.
More Republicans than Democrats differed with the majority in their own party.
For example, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska agreed with NARAL 42% of the time, and with National Right to Life 28% of the time. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine received a 45% score from NARAL and a 42% score from National Right to Life. Rep. Walter B. Jones of North Carolina garnered a score of 51% from NARAL and a rating of 85% from National Right to Life.
It is obvious that religion is not a reliable predictor of the way a Catholic member of the Congress will vote on abortion. Party matters—not religion.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards:
In her recently published memoir, outgoing Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards says that in January 2017 she and her husband met with Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner. She claims that Kushner floated the idea that if Planned Parenthood stopped providing abortions, federal funding for the organization would proceed smoothly.
Richards, who said "it almost felt like a bribe," is still incensed by the comment. To her, it was a ploy to make Ivanka and Jared look like "savvy dealmakers." Richards insists she was "essentially being asked to barter away women's rights for more money." Which is an odd thing to say given that exploiting women for money is what Planned Parenthood does for a living.
Predictably, the Kushners are being blasted by the champions of abortion, and Richards is being received as a heroine. But why?
Richards is playing both sides of the street. When pressed why Planned Parenthood is so fixated on abortion, she and her spokeswomen point to its latest annual report (2016-2017) to show that only 3 percent of its services have anything to do with abortion. Most of its work, they say, deals with such issues as testing and treatment, cancer screening, contraception, sex education, and other women's health services.
If this is true, then why are Richards and her fans so upset by Ivanka and Jared's proposal?
