Brazil Elects Pro-Life President, Despite Pressure to Legalize Abortion

By Anna Reynolds
Live Action News

On Sunday, Jair Bolsonaro won the presidential election in Brazil. His victory, with 55% of the vote, is significant because he is conservative and, more importantly, pro-life. For the past four presidential elections, Brazil has chosen left-leaning candidates. Bolsonaro represents a marked contrast, and his election has been described as the most dramatic political change since democracy was restored to Brazil more than three decades ago.

Under current law, Brazil is a strongly pro-life country. All abortions are banned except in cases of rape, when the mother’s health is at risk, or when a baby’s brain is severely deformed. International pressure by abortion groups, like that exerted on Ireland and Argentina, has been pushing Brazil to legalize abortion for years.

During the campaign, Bolsonaro repeatedly stated that he is committed to maintaining pro-life laws. Leading up to the October 28 run-off election, he signed a commitment to protecting the lives of the preborn. France 24 reports that Bolsonaro released a video about signing the commitment, in which he said, “We are signing a commitment defending the family, defending the innocence of children in the schools, defending the freedom of religion, against abortion and the legalization of drugs.”

One of Bolsonaro’s outspoken supporters is Sara Winter, a former pro-abortion activist who became pro-life. Before the birth of her son, an experience that she says made her pro-life, Winter founded a feminist pro-abortion group that gained international media attention for their topless protests and demands for the legalization of abortion. Now, as a pro-life activist, Winter supports Bolsonaro and encouraged her social media following to support him.

The international abortion lobby has long been trying to push Latin American countries, many of which are still strongly pro-life, to legalize the killing of the preborn. Bolsonaro’s victory indicates that pro-life values are still strong in Brazil, as in Argentina. Under Bolsonaro’s presidency, the legalization of abortion is unlikely to advance.

Vice-President Mike Pence: “We Have a President Who, Without Apology, Stands for the Sanctity of Human Life”

By Matthew Wagner
Life News

Vice President Mike Pence, a stalwart pro-lifer, recently made another stop in Pennsylvania, giving the commencement address at Grove City College. For his full remarks click here, but of particular note was this comment:

“And I can’t tell you how proud I am to be Vice President to a President who stands without apology for the sanctity of life and all the God-given liberties in the Constitution of the United States.”
The Trump Administration has given pro-lifers a renewed sense of hope after eight years of pro-abortion President Barack Obama. Some of the administration’s pro-life accomplishments so far include:

Vice President Mike Pence’s speech at the 2017 March for Life in Washington DC represented the first time a sitting Vice President spoke at the March.

President Trump reinstated a policy that prevents organizations receiving federal foreign aid from performing abortions or promoting them.

President Trump nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Now confirmed he will be a Justice in the mold of the late beloved Justice Antonin Scalia.

President Trump appointed avid pro-lifers to key cabinet positions including Kellyanne Conway as Senior Advisor, Tom Price as Secretary of Health and Human Services, Nikki Haley as UN Ambassador, and Ben Carson as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

President Trump even signed an executive order saying his administration will “provide regulatory relief for religious objectors to Obamacare’s burdensome preventive services mandate, a position supported by the Supreme Court decision in Hobby Lobby.”

Seventeen Ways to Make 2017 the Most Pro-Life Year Yet

By Nancy Flanders
Live Action News

The last few years have been promising for the pro-life movement. With some setbacks here and there, accomplishments have included 20-week abortion bans, state defunding of Planned Parenthood locations, and the shutting down of numerous abortion facilities across the country.

With a pro-life president about to take office who has vowed to federally defund Planned Parenthood and appoint pro-life politicians and judges, the hope for a more pro-life society is gaining momentum.

But we still need to keep fighting and keep showing people that to be anti-abortion is to be pro-life, pro-love, pro-woman, and pro-child. Here are 17 simple and more involved ways you can make 2017 your most pro-life year yet:
  1. Switch your profile pictures. Whether on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, a quick change to your profile picture to a pro-life quote or image can make a big difference. Friends who are also pro-life but are afraid to voice it will be inspired by you and could change their photos and become more outspoken. And if people who know you but don’t know you’re pro-life take notice, it can help them to see that pro-lifers are normal, everyday people who aren’t out to hurt women.
  2. Share pro-life news. It’s easy to click “share” on Facebook and “retweet” on Twitter. It only takes a second and you could spread good, pro-life news to your friends and family across social media.
  3. Donate to pro-life groups. There are thousands to choose from. You can donate to a pro-life pregnancy center, a pro-life website, or your local Right to Life group. With pro-abortion groups being backed by celebrities and the government, pro-life groups can use all the support they can get. Planned Parenthood’s CEO makes nearly a million dollars a year, whereas most pro-life workers are volunteers.
  4. Volunteer at pro-life pregnancy centers. Pro-life pregnancy centers are mostly run by volunteers and one paid staff member. It can be difficult to staff their offices and stay open for as many hours as pro-abortion facilities can. Volunteering your time will help them reach more women and girls who desperately need assistance and support.
  5. Pray outside an abortion facility. Many people are intimidated by the idea of standing outside an abortion facility. But this can be one of the best ways to reach women in crisis situations. Women entering abortion centers are often scared and feeling alone. Seeing a kind face who reaches out in peace and understanding can make a big impact. Whether you simply pray or hand out pro-life materials, your presence outside an abortion center can save lives.
