Midterm Candidates Should Be Asked About Gosnell, Late-Term Abortion

By Father Frank Pavone
Newsmax

Whatever a person’s position on the divisive issue of abortion, one would think and hope that at the very least, people can agree that babies who are born alive, and are completely separated from their mother’s body, should be protected by law.

Well, as it turns out, not even that protection is secure.

About 13,000 abortions a year in the United States occur at or beyond 21 weeks of pregnancy. Phone calls with legal abortion clinics that I have commissioned and that you can hear at ExposeAbortion.net show that abortions are being performed legally even at 32 weeks of pregnancy, on healthy mothers carrying healthy babies.

The further along in pregnancy an abortion occurs, the more difficult it is to tear the pieces of the body apart with the forceps. The methods used in late pregnancy, therefore, are essentially a stillbirth. The baby is killed and then delivered whole.  It’s simpler for the abortionist and avoids the risk of the skull and bone fragments tearing the mother’s birth canal.

But the downside for the abortionists is the increased risk of what they call “the dreaded complication,” which is that the baby comes out alive.

What does a person who has been paid to kill the baby — under the moral fiction that as long as the killing takes place in the womb, it is OK — do when that baby comes out of the womb alive? Does the abortionist complete the job he/she was paid to do, or suddenly shift gears and save the life he or she was just trying to end?  Unfortunately, it’s not as easy a question for them to answer as it should be.

In 2001, I helped nurse Jill Stanek tell her story of how, when working at Christ Hospital in Illinois, she held a baby for the last 45 minutes of his live after he was born alive following an abortion.

Currently, the case of Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell, sentenced to life in prison for murdering babies born alive in his abortion clinic, is getting renewed attention thanks to the film that was made about him. His staff testified as to how these aborted babies were crying, moving their arms, breathing, and swimming in the toilet and how Gosnell routinely cut their spinal cord with scissors. (Please see the movie!)

So clear is the evidence that this happens regularly that, both in state and federal law, “born alive infant protection” bills have been debated and passed in recent years. These bills would protect babies born alive after a failed abortion.

Barack Obama, when an Illinois state senator, actually voted “no” on such a bill.

When such a bill was being debated in Florida, a Planned Parenthood lobbyist named Alisa LaPolt Snow testified and was asked this question: "If a baby is born on a table as a result of a botched abortion, what would Planned Parenthood want to have happen to that child that is struggling for life?” She responded, "We believe that any decision that’s made should be left up to the woman, her family, and the physician.”

Wow. Can anyone say “conscience?”

In 2002, Congress passed a federal Born Alive bill and it was signed into law by President George W. Bush. But now Congress has had to revisit and try to strengthen that law, because it lacked adequate penalties.

In the Congress now concluding, the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act” (H.R. 4712) was introduced and passed by the House of Representatives. It mandates that any child born alive after a failed abortion be transported to a hospital.

Simple, right?

Well, it was passed by the House in January 2018 by a vote of 241-183. All Republicans voted for it.  But only five Democrats voted for it; all the rest voted against it.  (Those who voted for it were Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania, Henry Cuellar of Texas, Jim Langevin of Rhode Island, Dan Lipinski of Illinois, and Collin Peterson of Minnesota.)

The Senate did not take action on it.

Late-Term Abortion Clinic Kills Baby in Abortion Then Harvests Baby’s Body Parts for Research

By Steven Ertelt, Micaiah Bilger
Life News

A late-term abortion clinic in New Mexico faces a lawsuit after it killed a baby in an abortion and then harvested the baby’s body parts for research — without the mother’s consent. As LifeNews previously reported, a woman who aborted her baby in 2012 says the abortion facility donated her aborted daughter’s body to researchers at the University of New Mexico without her full knowledge or consent.

Jessica Duran filed a lawsuit against the Southwestern Women’s Options alleging that the abortion facility did not tell her that donating her aborted baby’s body was voluntary. Duran also said the abortion facility did not give her details about how her baby’s remains would be used in the research.

Duran’s lawsuit accuses SWO of deceptive trade practices and violation of state law, which requires informed consent before providing an abortion.

In a written ruling handed down last week, District Judge Clay Campbell of Albuquerque denied a motion by late-term abortionist Curtis Boyd and his business, Southwestern Women’s Options (SWO), to dismiss the lawsuit.

Judge Campbell ordered that all seven causes of action in Duran’s lawsuit, including the unauthorized harvesting of her infant’s body parts for research at the University of New Mexico (UNM), should go to trial and be decided by a jury.

“This ruling confirms the findings of our investigation,” said Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), who chaired the Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives last Congress. “We found evidence that women were being misled by these consent forms. I welcome this ruling and applaud Ms. Duran for continuing her fight against these injustices on behalf of the women who have endured the same.”

The transcript of the judge’s ruling points out deficiencies within the abortion consent form, which contains language about donating fetal tissue for research: “the only people being authorized, on its face, to do the research, is the clinic and the doctor. It doesn’t authorize UNMH to do the research.” Judge Campbell also stated, “failing to disclose the collaboration with the University of New Mexico. That fact should have been disclosed, wasn’t disclosed.”

“This is a monumental finding by the court,” said Elisa Martinez, executive director of the New Mexico Alliance for Life. “It shows UNM was not authorized to do any research using aborted infant bodies from Curtis Boyd’s abortion business, and thousands of women were deceived who now deserve justice.”

The Judge further noted the conflict of interest between UNM and Boyd, “I understand he [Curtis Boyd] was wearing two hats. The second hat was not disclosed, and it’s fairly clear from the allegations, taking them as true, that the research was being performed wearing the hat of him as an adjunct professor of UNMH. ”

Woman Dies During Late-Term Abortion, but Autopsy Lays Blame on Pregnancy Complications

By Kelli
Live Action News

A woman undergoing a late-term abortion in New Mexico has died, and it appears that authorities may be blaming her pregnancy for the death, rather than complications from the abortion.

Operation Rescue issued a press releasetoday, stating that 23-year-old Keisha Marie Atkins, believed to be at least six months pregnant, died on February 4, 2017, during a four-day abortion procedure committed by Southwestern Women’s Options in Albuquerque.

OR notes that four days after the procedure was begun on January 31, “Atkins returned to SWO for the completion of the abortion where she displayed labored breathing and signs of sepsis, a systemic, life-threatening infection.” It is unknown as to how Atkins ended up at the UNM Medical Center for emergency help, because “an ambulance was called to transport Atkins to the hospital, but was later cancelled.”

An emergency D&E was done at UNM Medical Center in an effort to complete the abortion, but Atkins “suffered cardiac arrest” during that procedure, and was unable to be resuscitated.

An autopsy conducted by the UNM Office of the Medical Investigator “determined that Atkins’ cause of death was ‘pulmonary thromboembolism due to pregnancy,’ in other words, blood clots in the lungs.” OR believes this is a “whitewash” meant to blame Atkins’ pregnancy for her death, instead of laying the blame on a mismanaged abortion procedure:

There is evidence that Atkins suffered from sepsis, a bacterial infection caused by the four-day abortion process, which brought about symptoms consistent with Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). Atkins suffered hemorrhaging in her brain, a buildup of fluid around her lungs, and other symptoms of DIC that the autopsy ignored.
