Catholic Bishop: “I Would Excommunicate Any Catholic Legislator” Who Voted for Abortions Up to Birth

By Micaiah Bilger
Life News

A Tennessee Catholic bishop said he would excommunicate any Catholic politician who advocated for abortion on demand as New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo did last week.

Knoxville Bishop Rick Stika said Cuomo’s pro-abortion lobbying is “so hideous and vile” that excommunication is warranted, the AP reports.

Last week, the New York governor, who claims to be Catholic, signed a radical pro-abortion law to legalize the killing of unborn babies for basically any reason up to birth.

It allows unborn babies to be aborted for any reason up to 24 weeks and up to birth for “health” reasons, a broad category that includes basically anything. It redefines a “person” as “a human being who has been born and is alive,” and describes abortion as a “fundamental right.” The law also removes state protections for infants born alive in botched abortions.

In celebration, Cuomo ordered that state landmarks be lit pink to celebrate abortion on demand.

“Excommunication is to be not a punishment but to bring the person back into the Church. It’s like medicine for them,” Stika continued. “But this vote is so hideous and vile that it warrants the act.”
Someone asked me today if I would issue an excommunication of a Catholic Governor under my jurisdiction if the Governor did the same as in New York. I think I might do it for any Catholic legislator under my jurisdiction who voted for the bill as well as the Governor.

Enough is enough. Excommunication is to be not a punishment but to bring the person back into the Church. It's like medicine for them. But this vote is so hideous and vile that it warrants the act. But thankfully I am not in that positon. Very sad.

Bishop Joseph Strickland of the Catholic Diocese of Tyler, Texas also condemned pro-abortion lawmakers for celebrating the pro-abortion law, calling it a “scene from Hell,”CNS News reports.

“Woe to those who ignore the sanctity of life, they reap the whirlwind of Hell,” Strickland wrote on Twitter. “Stand against this holocaust in every way you can.”

Bishop Robert Barron of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles also described the pro-abortion celebration scene as “the chattering of demons.”

However, New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan is reluctant to act. He said he has been receiving “wheelbarrow” loads of letters every day calling for Cuomo’s excommunication. However, he argued that the action would be “counterproductive” because Cuomo would not care – the governor “brags” about his pro-abortion record.

Dolan told Fox and Friends: “We have a governor that brags about it. We have a governor that uses his dissent from Church teaching as applause lines. We have a governor that takes quotes from Pope Francis out of context to draw an artificial cleavage between the bishops in New York and the Holy Father himself. He’s not going to be moved by this. So what would be the use?”

Polls indicate the new law is radically out of touch with most Americans’ views on abortion.

New York lawmakers also are considering a bill to legalize assisted suicide this winter.

Andrew Cuomo Says Pro-Lifers Are Not Welcome in the State of New York

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is already notorious among pro-lifers for being one of the most pro-abortion politicians in the nation. The state he serves already has one of the highest abortion rates in the country, but he has been continually fighting to make abortion even more widespread and commonplace in New York. Now, the abortion extremist is taken it even farther, publicly proclaiming on the Capitol Pressroom that pro-lifers are not welcome to live in New York.

You have a schism within the Republican Party. … They’re searching to define their soul, that’s what’s going on. Is the Republican party in this state a moderate party or is it an extreme conservative party? That’s what they’re trying to figure out. It’s a mirror of what’s going on in Washington. The gridlock in Washington is less about Democrats and Republicans. It’s more about extreme Republicans versus moderate Republicans.

… You’re seeing that play out in New York. … The Republican Party candidates are running against the SAFE Act — it was voted for by moderate Republicans who run the Senate! Their problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves. Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.

Last year, Governor Cuomo made it clear that he wants New York to be the abortion capital of the world. New York’s abortion rate statewide is already almost twice as high as the national average, and in New York City, it’s even worse. Cuomo’s Women’s Equality Act, opposed by the majority of New Yorkers, was defeated last year, but Cuomo has sworn to try to get it passed again in 2014.

That Andrew Cuomo wants there to be more abortions in New York isn’t a surprise to anyone. That he is so extreme as to say that pro-lifers shouldn’t even be able to live in his state, simply for believing in the sanctity of life, is truly shocking. To him, evidently it’s not good enough for abortion to just be legal and widespread – he thinks that pro-lifers should be not only silenced, but kicked out of the state.

It’s despicable and disturbing. And while pro-lifers are used to abortion advocates attempting to have them silenced, this takes it to an entirely new and sickening level.

NY Catholic Bishop Questions Gov. Cuomo's Faith Over ‘Death Star’ Abortion Law

Even though he is divorced, supports same-sex marriage and abortion rights, Cuomo still considers himself a practicing Roman Catholic but wouldn’t go as far as to say
he is devout...

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's faith is being questioned after he signed a bill into law that legalizes abortion up to birth for any reason.

Section 2 of the controversial Reproductive Health Act states that “an abortion May be performed by a licensed, certified, or authorized practitioner within 24 weeks from the commencement of pregnancy, or there is an absence of fetal viability, or at any time when necessary to protect a patient's life or health.”

In an open letter Saturday to the governor in The Evangelist, the official publication for the Diocese of Albany, the Most Rev. Edward B. Scharfenberger called into question Cuomo's Catholic faith, arguing that what the bill permits is contrary to the teachings of the Catholic faith he professes.
“Although in your recent state of state address you cited your Catholic faith and said we should ‘stand with Pope Francis.’ Your advocacy of extreme abortion legislation is completely contrary to the teachings of our pope and our Church. Once truth is separated from fiction and people come to realize the impact of the bill, they will be shocked to their core. By that time, however, it may be too late to save the countless lives that will be lost or spare countless women lifelong regret,” wrote Scharfenberger.
Cuomo signed the controversial Reproductive Health Act into law at a reception in the Executive Mansion immediately after legislators voted to approve it on the 46th anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. WadeSupreme Court ruling.
“Today I signed the #ReproductiveHealthAct — codifying Roe v. Wadeinto state law and protecting women's reproductive rights no matter what the federal government does. This is a victory for all New Yorkers,” Cuomo said in a tweet Tuesday.
“Many of the state Senators and Assembly Members who voted for this abortion expansion are mothers themselves, who felt their child toss, turn and kick in their womb, and delighted in the progress of their pregnancy. Many others, as well as our governor, are fathers, who held their partner’s hand as they viewed the ultrasound videos, watched their child squirm and rejoiced at the first sound of a heartbeat.
Many of these same officials were themselves born into less-than-perfect conditions – poverty, health problems, disabilities, broken families. All overcame these issues to rise to leadership in our state, because their parents chose life for them,” it said. The New York State Catholic Conference said in a statement after the vote Tuesday that it was a tragic chapter in the state’s history.
