MORE THAN HALF OF HIGH SCHOOLERS CURRENTLY ABSTINENT

By Matthew Archbold

While the refrain for years from some has been that asking high school students to remain abstinent was an impossible task, none other than the liberal Guttmacher Institute is reporting that more teens are choosing to put off engaging in sexual activity, according to The Heritage Foundation.

According to the report:

-         For children born in 1991, the median age for their first sexual intercourse is nearing 18 years old. That’s a year later than those born just 13 years earlier.

-         Less than 6 percent of teens reported having sexual intercourse by the time they were 15 years old. Just last year that percentage was a much higher 13 percent.

-         Half of all high school students are currently abstinent.

-         In the past nineteen years, the rate of teen fatherhood dropped 36 percent.

Matthew Archbold worked as a journalist for many newspapers in the Philadelphia area including the Philadelphia Inquirer. He left in order to raise his five children and now works as a writer for The Cardinal Newman Society, The National Catholic Register and Creative Minority Report.

Founded in 1993, the mission of The Cardinal Newman Society is to promote and defend faithful Catholic education.

The Society seeks to fulfill its mission in numerous ways, including supporting education that is faithful to the teaching and tradition of the Catholic Church; producing and disseminating research and publications on developments and best practices in Catholic education; and keeping Catholic leaders and families informed.

Abortion Insurance Stopped at Loyola Marymount University

From  Patrick J. Reilly, President
The Cardinal Newman Society

Here's a great example of what one person can do—with your help!—to renew Catholic education and halt the march toward insurance coverage for abortion.

When vigilant philosophy professor James Hanink discovered that his employer, Loyola Marymount University, was covering both abortion and contraception in its insurance plan, he brought the information to the attention of the University and The Cardinal Newman Society. We planned today to report the scandal. But instead—because of a professor's courage, our reporter's queries, and your prayers and support—LMU is dropping its abortion coverage. Thank God, and thank you!

The Cardinal Newman Society has a 20-year record of turning the tide in support of faithful Catholic education. Very often, changes for the better start with one good student, alumnus or parent voicing their concerns and teaming up with the Newman Society. Please consider donating today to help support our work.

We told you last week about our groundbreaking conference, gathering some of the brightest minds in education to discuss solutions for student life departments on Catholic campuses. Now, a surprising new study reports that more teens are choosing to delay sexual activity. This underscores the importance of our work with student life officials, working to uphold and not destroy the virtue of college students.

Please keep us in your prayers!
