Save the Storks Shows HBO's John Oliver Why 4 Out of 5 Moms Are Choosing Not to Abort Their Babies

The pro-life nonprofit organization Save the Storks has released a powerful Mother's Day campaign video showing pregnant women who are choosing not to abort their unborn babies after receiving free sonograms outside of abortion clinics on Save the Storks buses.

In response to a recent attack on Save the Storks by HBO's John Oliver, the organization decided to show why their ministry is so effective. Save the Storks believes their Mother's Day video will redefine what is possible for pro-life Americans.

"There are untold millions who have long been eager to come to the aid of would-be mothers in crisis; millions who believe they have limited opportunities to make a real difference. That changes today. This Mother's Day campaign gives pro-life Americans the tools to make an impact wherever they are," Victoria Robinson, director of external relations at Save the Storks, said in a statement shared with The Christian Post.

"Had information and resources like this been available to me when I was a young mother in crisis, I would have made vastly different choices. Every would-be mother has a fundamental right to understand all of her options during pregnancy, and we can't wait to see how expanding on the success of Storks will transform countless lives forever."

Save the Storks' video was prompted by an episode of "Last Week Tonight" that aired on April 8 titled "Crisis Pregnancy Centers." The episode claimed that organizations like Save the Storks ".... deceptively steer women away from abortion." The segment featured strong criticism of Save the Storks and Oliver rolling out his own mock crisis pregnancy van.

The pro-life group's Mother's Day video campaign created by the Harmon Brothers hits back at Oliver and went viral, showing the real purpose for their Save the Storks buses. The video, titled "Thousands of women have changed their mind on abortion after visiting a Stork Bus. Why so many?," is the agency's first major campaign.

The video has been viewed over 200,000 times on Facebook alone and was shared by nearly 5,000 people.

"Being an organization that believes in sharing the truth, without condemnation or judgement, we wanted this video to reflect the heart and mission of Save the Storks. Our faith calls us to be responsible in doing do just that. We've conveyed that message in this video, and are getting an amazing response," Robinson told CP of the overwhelming support they've received.

Mother Saves Her Baby’s Life Through Florida Safe Haven Law

Safe Haven laws save lives. Heartbreaking stories occasionally make headlines, of newborn infants abandoned and left to die — in bathrooms, in garbage cans, in sewers — because desperate mothers felt they had no other choice. But in Florida, one baby is still alive after a mother took advantage of the state’s safe haven law.

A mother approached a fire station in Davie, Florida, with her hours-old baby wrapped in a towel. The baby, a girl, weighed about six pounds and is said to be in good condition. The little girl will be placed for adoption, and the mother was able to safely surrender her baby and remain anonymous, with no questions asked and no repercussions. Battalion Chief Daniel Moran praised her for choosing to safely surrender her baby, saying that “moms in crisis should know it’s completely anonymous and in the best interests of the child” to bring newborns to authorities if they aren’t able to take care of them.

In Florida, mothers can bring their newborn to any hospital, emergency medical service station, or fire station, and surrender custody to any emergency medical technician, paramedic, or firefighter, and remain anonymous without any charges filed. The baby will then be taken to the hospital to receive medical care, and will be placed for adoption. Any medical problems needing treatment will be covered, as the state assumes the baby is eligible for Medicaid, and therefore will receive coverage. The baby will not be deemed as “abandoned,” as this would open the mother to investigation.

Almost every single state has some variation of a safe haven law, although some states — like California and Minnesota — are much stricter, limiting the places and the amount of time a mother can surrender her baby. Baby boxes are also a growing trend, started by firefighter Monika Kelsey, herself abandoned as an infant. In an interview with Live Action, she explained why baby boxes and safe haven laws are so important:

The Safe Haven Law, also called the Baby Moses Law in some states, is in effect in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The law is in place to protect all parties involved. In most states, a woman has 30 days after birth to safely surrender the child at any fire station, police station, or hospital with no questions asked.

Why Would Christians Go Christmas Caroling Outside an Abortion Clinic?

A young woman sits in the waiting room of American Women’s Medical Center on Chicago’s northwest side, waiting to be called back to the operating room for her procedure. Even now, she’s unsure about the choice she’s made. She knows that abortion is against her religion, but she feels cornered. This is the only way out.

Then she hears something that breaks through her anguished thoughts. A group of voices is singing outside the building. She recognizes the familiar words of a Christmas carol: “’round yon virgin, mother and child, holy infant, so tender and mild.”

Outside, a group of some 30 carolers huddle together, bundled up against the cold, each holding a photocopy of a song sheet. As they finish the last lines of their final carol, “Silent Night,” the young woman comes out of the building. She approaches a member of the caroling group and says she’s decided not to go through with her abortion. “I heard your singing and started thinking of Mary and Jesus, and I just couldn’t go through with it.”

As the rest of the carolers move off to their cars to head to the next stop on their caroling tour, an experienced counselor stays behind to talk to the young woman about her situation. She gives her the number for a nearby pro-life pregnancy center that can help her with prenatal care, housing, getting plugged into social services, and anything else she might need.

This Christmas miracle took place on a Saturday morning in December 2003, the year the Pro-Life Action League organized our first Christmas caroling tour at abortion facilities throughout Chicago. We soon began training other pro-life groups to hold “Peace in the Womb” Christmas caroling tours in their own communities, and they were soon reporting back to us with their own stories of mothers being moved to cancel their abortions. This year, Christmas carols will be sung at close to 100 abortion facilities throughout the country.

It is especially sorrowful that a child would be aborted at this time of year—a horrible contradiction of the Christmas story of hope and joy dawning upon the earth with the birth of a baby. 

Those of us who go out every year to sing Christmas carols outside abortion centers draw parallels between the story of Bethlehem and so many of those sitting in abortion waiting rooms right now—the poor and displaced who have found “no room at the inn,” and in desperation are turning to abortion.
