Oregon Governon Signs Bill Requiring Taxpayers to Fund Abortions for Citizens and Undocumented Immigrants

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed into law a bill Tuesday requiring taxpayers to fund abortions through health insurance plans for both citizens and undocumented immigrants. The measure, which is being labeled as one of the most extreme pro-abortion policies in the nation, makes Oregon the first state to strong-arm taxpayers into funding all abortions, including sex-selection abortions and late-term abortions.

The law requires abortion coverage to Oregonians, regardless of income, gender identity, or citizenship status, and allocates roughly $500,000 over the next two years to provide abortions to undocumented immigrants.

The Associated Press reported: “The Oregon bill is unique… in that patients would have access to the procedure for virtually any reason, at any time, including sex-selective and late-term abortions.”

After the measure passed the state legislature last month, Gov. Kate Brown applauded the move and signaled her support of the bill on Twitter:

The New Yorker reports that Brown is a longtime abortion activist. In the aftermath of the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, Brown urged her mother to become a Democrat. She also volunteered at the Feminist Women’s Health Center in Portland.

In an interview on Fox News with Martha MacCallum, Live Action President Lila Rose called the bill an extreme push to force abortions on taxpayers. Rose urged lawmakers to protect the preborn, noting that lives are at stake.

Hillary Clinton’s Plan to Make Americans Fund Abortions “is Right Out of Margaret Sanger’s Playbook”

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has extreme ambitions for abortion on demand in America. She wants to make it taxpayer funded and available until the day of birth — and she does not want the First Amendment to get in her way. 

Fortunately for Americans who want to disentangle tax dollars from abortion — which pro-life Americans consider morally wrong and which a number of pro-choice Americans consider morally fraught — we do have another option this November.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump recently released his pro-life platform, which includes making permanent the Hyde Amendment, the 1976 law prohibiting the use of federal money for abortion except in cases when the mother’s life is at stake or in cases of rape or incest. 

He promises to sign into law the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which I cosponsored and supported on the House floor; nominate pro-life justices to the Supreme Court; and defund Planned Parenthood so long as they continue to perform abortions.

If elected president, Hillary Clinton promises to repeal the Hyde Amendment. Likewise, the 2016 Democratic Party platform states the party’s intention to overturn laws and policies that it believes “impede a woman’s access to abortion,” including the Hyde Amendment.  This aggressive abortion agenda reflects a radical departure from commonly held positions of pro-life and pro-choice Americans over the past four decades and is not based on current public opinion. 

According to a recent poll by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, about eight in 10 Americans support restrictions on abortion and would limit the procedure to the first three months of pregnancy. Moreover, 62 percent of Americans oppose taxpayer funding for abortion, including 45 percent of pro-choice Americans.

Absent public pressure for taxpayer funded abortion, what is the Left’s motivation to expand abortion? Abortion is certainly lucrative. Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards was paid more than $2.47 million from 2009 to 2013. 

In 2013, the profit-driven abortion giant reported net assets of $1.4 billion, performed 327,653 abortions, and accepted $528 million in taxpayer funds. But beyond this, abortion is one of the most powerful tools at liberal elites’ disposal to socially engineer society.

Take it from Mrs. Clinton. Last year during a speech she gave at the 6th annual Women in the World Summit she unapologetically painted “religious beliefs,” as an undue obstacle to abortion. She suggested that abortion (unsurprisingly veiled under the phrase “reproductive healthcare”) is necessary for women’s advancement in society. 

"Laws have to be backed up with resources and political will,” she opined, “And deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed.”

Cardinal Dolan: “Catholics for Choice” Rejects and Distorts Catholic Social Teaching

Editor’s note. As NRL News Today has reported, the pro-abortion “Catholics for Choice” recently published full pages in major newspapers. The following statement, issued by Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, was intended to “alert the public to a deceptive ad campaign calling for taxpayer funding of abortion in the name of the Catholic faith.”

As the U.S. Catholic bishops have stated for many years, the use of the name ‘Catholic’ as a platform to promote the taking of innocent human life is offensive not only to Catholics, but to all who expect honesty and forthrightness in public discourse.  

An abortion advocacy organization called “Catholics for Choice” (CFC) placed deceptive full-page newspaper ads in multiple cities on September 12 calling for taxpayer funding of abortion in the name of the Catholic faith.

CFC is not affiliated with the Catholic Church in any way. It has no membership, and clearly does not speak for the faithful. It is funded by powerful private foundations to promote abortion as a method of population control.

The organization rejects and distorts Catholic social teaching — and actually attacks its foundation. 

As Pope Francis said this summer to leaders in Poland, “Life must always be welcomed and protected…from conception to natural death. All of us are called to respect life and care for it.”

CFC’s extreme ads promote abortion as if it were a social good. But abortion kills the most defenseless among us, harms women, and tears at the heart of families. Pushing for public funding would force all taxpaying Americans to be complicit in the violence of abortion and an industry that puts profit above the well-being of women and children.

According to a July 2016 poll conducted by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, 62 percent of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortion, including 45 percent of those who say they are pro-choice.

Finally, the CFC pits the needs of pregnant women against those of their unborn children. This is a false choice. Catholics and all people of good will are called to love them both. Consider supporting local pregnancy help centers, which do incredible work caring for mothers and children alike in a manner consistent with true social justice and mercy.

Unelected Judge Forces Ohio to Continue Funding Planned Parenthood Abortion Biz

An [unelected] judge is continuing to force Ohio to fund the Planned Parenthood abortion business with taxpayer dollars.

Ohio was one of the states to pass legislation defunding the Planned Parenthood abortion business but a federal judge today ruled the Buckeye State can’t revoke taxpayer funds from the abortion company while its lawsuit against the state proceeds.

The Planned Parenthood abortion business is not happy the state of Ohio approved legislation to permanently ban any taxpayer funding for the abortion corporation. Governor John Kasich recently signed the pro-life bill into law.

After the Planned Parenthood abortion company was caught in multiple states selling aborted babies and their body parts, several states have taken steps to defund it and Ohio became the 10th state to take steps to end or cut Planned Parenthood funding. Planned Parenthood runs three abortion centers in the state and every Planned Parenthood clinic refers women for abortions.

So the abortion company sued.

Today, Judge Michael Barrett granted a permanent injunction, preventing the Ohio law to defund entities that perform or promote abortions from taking effect.

Katie Franklin, director of communications for Ohio Right to Life, told LifeNews.com she is disappointed by the derision.

“Judge Barrett’s decision is a clear violation of states’ rights and the conscience rights of taxpayers. It is the public policy of the state of Ohio to prefer childbirth over abortion, and we should be allowed to allocate funds accordingly,” she said. “Planned Parenthood has no constitutional right to the hard-earned dollars of taxpayers, millions of whom have deep and abiding objections to the corporation’s pro-abortion business model.”
