The Power of the “Aha” Moments

By Maria Gallagher
National Right to Life

Sometimes, it is those little “aha” moments in life that strengthen my convictions about the nobility of the pro-life cause.

It so happened this week that I had a meeting with a state representative to brief her on Pennsylvania’s landmark Parenting and Pregnancy Support program, which is administered by Real Alternatives, Inc.

The program is a phenomenal success story. Begun under the late pro-life Democratic Governor Bob Casey, Sr., the venture provides loving support and comprehensive counseling to pregnant women.

Nearly 300,000 women have been served; almost 1.5 million client visits have been recorded. The program—which has become a model for the rest of the nation—funds pregnancy care centers, maternity homes, and adoption agencies throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The legislator I was visiting, Rep. Kate Klunk (R-York), had her baby girl, Grace, in tow. So as the representatives of Real Alternatives and I were talking, Rep. Klunk was cradling Baby Grace in her lap. As I looked into the infant’s amazingly wide eyes, I had the “aha” moment.

How could it possibly be that babies a little smaller and a tad younger than this are torn from their mothers’ wombs through abortion?

The innocence, the curiosity, the joy radiating from those eyes were impossible to ignore. That little human being captivated us and motivated us. We want to make Pennsylvania a safer, more welcoming place for children like her.

The moment was both ordinary and extraordinary—a mother and child loving each other with every fiber of their beings. I could have sat there and watched them for hours on end.

It is in the grace of a seemingly ordinary moment when an individual may finally recognize the humanity of the preborn child, the inestimable value of a person with disabilities, and the inherent dignity of a person at the twilight of life. And it is that recognition—this “aha” moment– that can lead someone to join the pro-life movement, offering a life-time commitment to protecting the most vulnerable among us.

God bless all the mothers, like Rep. Klunk, who deftly balance the demands of family and work with courage and strength. God bless mothers who take a step back from the workplace to care for their families.

And God bless all those pregnancy care center staff members and volunteers who provide the nonjudgmental acceptance and support that empower women to make life-affirming decisions for themselves and their children.

“Real Alternatives”–A Lifesaver for More Than 280,000 Women and Their Families

By Maria Gallagher

A woman is under extreme pressure from her boyfriend to abort her baby. Frightened and worried, she decides to go to a pregnancy care center for help. There, thanks to the listening ear of a compassionate counselor, she is able to pour her feelings out. She does not want the abortion, and the counselor stands ready to accompany her during every phase of her pregnancy.

This scenario reoccurs again and again at the nearly 100 pregnancy centers which receive assistance through Pennsylvania’s pregnancy support and parenting program, which is ably administered by Real Alternatives, Inc. During its two decades of service to the women of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Real Alternatives has been a lifesaver for more than 280,000 women and their families.

It has often been said that a woman facing a challenging pregnancy does not need a pamphlet—she needs a person ready and willing to accompany her on her journey. That personal, one-to-one care is exactly what Real Alternatives provides.

From diapers to day care referrals, from mentoring to maternity clothes, these pregnancy centers offer substantial support and comprehensive counseling to women. The assistance comes not only during a woman’s pregnancy, but up to a year after the birth of her child.

As a result, the Pennsylvania program has become a model for the rest of the nation, with a number of states offering similar outreach to women and their families.

According to Real Alternatives CEO Kevin Bagatta, Esq., “Compassionate trained counselors assess each woman’s situation and assist her in developing a positive approach to her pregnancy. Support during the parenting and adoption decision involves counseling, education, material assistance, and referrals. By empowering women in a crisis pregnancy with this comprehensive support, they no longer feel compelled to choose abortion out of a sense of helplessness, hopelessness, and of being completely alone.”

For Real Alternatives, the statistics tell much of the story. For a modest investment of state resources, the results are priceless. For instance, 85% of the women who entered the program who were pressured by others to abort choose childbirth.

The program also pays for itself in other ways. Women who visit Real Alternatives centers are far more likely to receive prenatal care, reducing their risk of giving birth to low-birth weight babies. They are also more likely to keep up to date with their children’s immunizations.

Pregnancy Help Centers “Real Alternatives” Offer a Life-Affirmation Option for Pregnant Women and Girls

Family and friends have abandoned the young woman, believing that her pregnancy is a problem to “be gotten rid of.” Abandoned, the “easy” path leads to her baby’s death.

But there is an alternative, another road, driven by compassion. In our state the woman or girl can turn to Pennsylvania’s Pregnancy and Parenting Support Program.

The program is administered by Real Alternatives, Inc. which supports both the woman and her baby, equipping her with the tools that will help her succeed at motherhood, college, relationships, and the rest of the elements of her life.

Over the past two decades, Real Alternatives has provided kind-hearted, clear-thinking, and loving support to more than 275,000 women and their families. They have helped women and girls to find solace, hope, and encouragement for the future.

As writer Frederica Matthews-Green stated so eloquently,

“They (Women) have said if I’d only had one person to stand by me, and it could have been a stranger, but they’d say I needed somebody to be a sister to me, I needed someone to be a friend . . . I would have had that baby. And, that’s what you do in maternity homes and crisis pregnancy centers and in offering adoption services. You are that friend . . .”
The statewide network of 91 non-profit centers and close to 350 counselors reaches out to women of all backgrounds and walks of life with services that are 100 percent free.

The success stories are inspiring…women finishing their GED and obtaining gainful employment…women leaving dangerously abusive relationships…women empowered to become effective decision-makers for themselves and their families.
As Kellyanne Conway, now a counselor to the President, once said, “Your trophy does not sit on a shelf . . .the trophy for your hard work plays on a swing, moves a tassel during a graduation ceremony, and yes even one day experiences the joy of motherhood.”
