Knights of Columbus Urge Support for Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act

By Dave Andrusko
National Right to Life

As many of our NRL News Today readers know, the Knights of Columbus are a powerful force on behalf of unborn babies. Under the leadership of Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, the KOC has grown to nearly 2 million members.

That’s why it was so encouraging that Mr. Anderson sent out an action alert urging support for the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. Rather than paraphrase, let me just repost the alert:
Dear Brother Knight,
Your immediate action is needed to support national legislation that would strengthen the culture of life in the United States.
On Tuesday, the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on H.R. 36, the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This life-saving legislation would ban abortions at the point when scientists agree unborn children begin to feel pain in the womb (approximately 20 weeks).
Earlier this year, our Knights of Columbus/Marist Poll found that 59% of Americans support this type of ban on abortion, including a majority who consider themselves pro-choice!
At our most recent Supreme Convention in St. Louis, we resolved “to speak out to our elected representatives about the need to enact legislation protecting human life in all its stages.” I urge you to contact your Member of Congress today and express your support for H.R. 36, the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
You can do this easily by visiting our Action Alert Center to email your Congressman.
You can also look up your Congressman’s phone number [www.house.gov ] and call their offices in Washington directly (just enter your zip code on the top right corner to look up your Congressman’s information).
Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for helping to build a culture of life.
Fraternally,
Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight

Knights of Columbus Sets Goal of Saving 1 Million Unborn Babies

By Steven Ertelt
Life News

The Knights of Columbus is taking its popular and successful ultrasound program to the next level with the goal of saving one million unborn lives with the help of technology that helps mothers to choose life over abortion.

Since 2009, Knights at the state and local levels have partnered with the Supreme Council in New Haven, Conn., to fund ultrasound machines for pregnancy care centers. They have so far placed 829 units in centers or in mobile medical units.
“We know from experience that a woman who sees an ultrasound image of her child is highly likely to keep her baby,” said Knights of Columbus CEO Carl Anderson at the organization’s 135th international convention in St. Louis.
Anderson recounted a conversation he had earlier this year during the dedication of a pro-life pregnancy center in San Antonio. A nurse practitioner told him that the first woman to use the new machine said her mind was already made up in favor of abortion.
“But then, as she watched the ultrasound,” recalled Anderson, “her baby turned and seemed to wave to her. She looked up at the nurse and said, ‘I’m going to keep my baby.’”
Anderson estimated that the machines have already saved hundreds of thousands of lives and set a new goal for the Knights to reach 1,000 machines in use by the time the Knights’ ultrasound program reaches its 10th anniversary in 2019. Knights-donated machines are already at work in all 50 states.
“If each machine saves the lives of just four unborn children each week, the Knights will have saved more than one million lives,” said Anderson. “Let us continue this great effort by reaching the goal of 1,000 machines as quickly as possible.”
Founded in 1882 by Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney, the Knights of Columbus has grown to nearly 2 million members, with charity as the organization’s primary mission. Last year, Knights donated $177.5 million and more than 75 million hours of service to charitable causes.

Next to Abortion Mill, Pregnancy Center Helping Moms Fall in Love with Their Babies via Ultrasound

By Jay Hobbs
National Right to Life

When Jessica saw her son, Jayden, for the first time via ultrasound in 2014, the “crisis” of her unplanned pregnancy took an immediate back seat. She had fallen in love, and there was no going back.

Working a full-time job and planning to start college the next semester, Jessica would have been an easy target for the abortion industry and its Duluth outpost—kitty-corner from Women’s Care Center. Instead, she’s now the mother of a 3-year-old and pursuing her newfound goal of working with babies in the medical field.

“The ultrasound made it so real,” Jessica said. “He kept moving his little arms like, ‘Hey, I’m here!’”
Adding a new, upgraded ultrasound machine this summer, Women’s Care Center is hoping the machine’s 4-D capabilities will help even more women like Jessica fall in love and choose life for their babies.

Jennifer Woodall, executive director for Women’s Care Center of Duluth, told reporters at a local Fox affiliate the donation was “an incredible blessing,” especially considering the need represented by Duluth’s poverty rate—which is 10 percent higher than the state’s average.

“Being able to offer this no matter what their financial background is or whether they have health insurance or not—it’s a way to give back to our community,” Woodall said.
The machine was donated by a local chapter of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization that has raised over $36 million to place 752 ultrasound units at local pregnancy help medical clinics in all 50 U.S. states since 2009.

Located just across the street from the only abortion mill in Northern Minnesota, Women’s Care Center of Duluth is part of a 25-site group that serves in five Midwestern states.

Since opening its doors in March of 2013 the center has performed more than 800 free ultrasounds and reached over 1,500 individual clients just a matter of steps from an abortion business that claimed 398 preborn lives in 2015.
