A statement the White House released today indicates president Donald Trump would sign the pro-life bill banning late-term abortions after 20 weeks if Congress approves it and sends it to his desk.
The House of Representatives is voting today on the legislation that would ban abortions at a time that unborn children are capable of feeling intense pain. The bill would ensure that abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy are prohibited except for very rare circumstances where the life of the mother may be in danger.
Thousands of such late-term abortions take place every year in the United States. Congress has already approved many years ago a ban on a mid-late-term abortion procedure called partial birth abortions and this late term abortion ban would follow on that ban that was upheld at the Supreme Court.
The statement from the Trump Administration read as follows:
“The bill, if enacted into law, would help to facilitate the culture of life to which our Nation aspires. Additionally, the bill would promote a science-based approach to unborn life, as recent advancements have revealed that the physical structures necessary to experience pain are developed within 20 weeks of fertilization."
"The United States is currently out of the mainstream in the family of nations, in which only 7 out of 198 nations allow elective abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. America’s children deserve the stronger protections that H.R. 36 would advance.”
“The Administration strongly supports H.R. 36, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, and applauds the House of Representatives for continuing its efforts to secure critical pro-life protections,” it continues. “If H.R. 36 were presented to the President in its current form, his advisors would recommend that he sign the bill into law. ”
Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannefelser previously confirmed President Trump would sign the abortion ban into law. Not only that, she added, but the bill boasts the support of the president.
“The other thing that is different this time is that the president of the United States, who I talked with last night at the White House about this, considers it a high priority,” she continued. “So this has become now a national conversation, not just a conversation that you have off on the sidelines.”

The Missouri Legislature has acted decisively to grant new authority to the Attorney General to enforce state laws regulating abortion and abortion providers.
During its recent special session, the General Assembly enacted a sweeping pro-life bill that delegated new powers to the Attorney General to prosecute violations of state abortion laws.
Under the new law, the Attorney General is granted concurrent original jurisdiction to enforce abortion regulations along with local prosecuting attorneys and circuit attorneys.
The Attorney General could commence legal actions on his own with regard to failure to comply with state laws governing abortion facilities and persons performing abortions.
The new powers of the Attorney General would include authority to seek injunctions in state or federal court to prevent further violations of state abortion law.
Senator Andrew Koenig of St. Louis County sponsored the legislation. “There are forces at work that would like Missouri to become ‘the wild west’ with abortion being on demand with little to no concern for safety.”
“It is time for us to act in defense of life and the health and safety of women,” Senator Koenig observed.
The State of Missouri has had a long history of adopting some of the strongest pro-life laws in the nation. Missouri has been a leader in enacting ground-breaking legislation in efforts to protect preborn children and their mothers.
However, state agencies have weakly enforced these important laws, and state attorneys general have at times weakly defended those laws when they have been challenged in court.
With the election of Josh Hawley last November, Missouri has a pro-life Attorney General for the first time in 24 years. Hawley is now in a position to see that pro-life actions of the Missouri Legislature are truly implemented. Hawley’s views on the abortion issue are unequivocal.
“Abortion is not a right. It is a violent act against the defenseless. It violates every principle of morality and should be barred by American law.”

Alabama lawmakers are preparing for the day when Roe v. Wade is overturned.
Abortion will not become illegal immediately when Roe is overturned; instead, the power to legislate abortion will return to the states.
On Thursday, the Alabama House passed a bill that would protect unborn babies’ right to life in the event that Roe is overturned; legislators voted 67-14 in favor of the measure, Alabama Media Group reports.
The Associated Press reports the bill would amend the state constitution to declare Alabama a “right to life” state. If the bill passes the state Senate, the amendment also would have to be approved by voters on the 2018 ballot.
Here’s more from the AP:
“We want to make sure that at a state level, if Roe v. Wade is overturned, that the Alabama Constitution cannot be used as a mechanism by which to claim that there is a right to abortion,” said state Rep. Matt Fridy, the legislation’s sponsor.
The proposed constitutional amendment says it would be Alabama’s public policy “to recognize and support the sanctity of unborn life and the rights of unborn children, most importantly the right to life.”
Fridy disputed any notion that politics were at play and said Alabama is “a pro-life state.” Trump easily won Alabama in November with 62 percent of the vote.
Other states such as Missouri and Utah have approved similar “right to life” measures.
Local Planned Parenthood leaders blasted the legislation, saying it would “completely outlaw abortion.”
