The Power of an Ultrasound to Change a Mind and to Save a Life Should Never be Underestimated

It happened when I was scrolling through my Facebook feed one day.

In between posts about the latest football games, I saw it—and it melted my heart.

There was an Ultrasound of not one, but two babies—the latest additions to my Facebook friend’s family.

I have seen my share of Ultrasounds over the years—my darling daughter’s was the most memorable. Lying on the exam table, I looked up at the screen and saw my little one playing with her toes while in utero.

It was an incredible and unforgettable sight.

But I believe this was the first time I have viewed an Ultrasound of twins. The precious preborn babies were clearly visible—and their official age was 14 weeks’ gestation.

In that moment, gazing at that image, it was hard for me to fathom the idea that anyone would view them as unworthy of care and too young to be guaranteed the right to life. It was also hard to accept the fact that babies where I live, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, can be legally aborted up to 24 weeks’ gestation—10 weeks past the age of the twins in question. It is even more alarming to think about the babies who are aborted up to the moment of birth.

A picture is worth a thousand statistics. It is one thing to hear about nearly one million preborn children being aborted each year. It is quite another to see a prenatal portrait of a baby who lacks protection under the law.

I wonder how many other minds and hearts that Ultrasound touched. From the comments below the photo, it was clear that Facebook friends were astounded at the amazing image.

And it is no wonder that studies show that, when pregnant women are shown an ultrasound of their babies inside supportive pregnancy resource centers, the vast majority will choose life for their children.

Thus it is abundantly obvious why abortion centers do their best to hide Ultrasounds from their abortion-minded clients. Once a woman sees that miraculous image, her tenuous bond to her child is highly likely to grow stronger. The Ultrasound literally puts a face—a distinctively human face- on what the abortion industry cavalierly refers to as the “choice.”

The experience of seeing that Facebook Ultrasound has also left me to wonder, “How many twins are aborted each year in our country? How many times is the tragedy of abortion actually doubled through the deaths of two preborn babies at one time?”

In the words of one clergyman, this could be considered a “two-for-one temptation.” Twice the tragedy. Twice the heartache for the mother left behind.

Never underestimate the power of an Ultrasound to change a mind and to save a life. And consider using your Facebook feed as a way to celebrate life at all its stages and at all phases of development.

Ben Shapiro Destroys the Pro-Abortion Argument With a Simple Ultrasound Photo

Popular conservative commentator Ben Shapiro used basic, undisputed facts about an unborn baby’s development to expose the brutality of abortion Sunday on Fox News.

He responded to the ridiculous rhetoric and “Handmaid’s Tale” costumes that abortion activists have been using to oppose pro-life efforts, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

To destroy their pro-abortion arguments, Shapiro displayed the ultrasound image of an unborn baby and urged listeners to “think about that next time you see a radical feminist, in a handmaid’s tale outfit, suggesting that you better respect her right to carve apart an unborn baby in the womb, or else you are some sort of fascist,” FaithWire reports.

“Let’s look reality in the face,” Shapiro said. “This is a picture of a 19-week-old baby. This is a human child. This is not a ball of goo.”

He referred to legislation that the U.S. Senate narrowly defeated in January, a bill that would have prohibited abortions after 20 weeks when strong scientific evidence indicates unborn babies can feel pain. The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act passed the U.S. House but narrowly failed to get the 60 votes needed to pass in the U.S. Senate. Just three Democrats voted in favor of the protections. The legislation would have saved as many as 18,000 unborn babies from abortions every year.

“Take a good look at that baby. That is a human being with zero rights according to the mainstream of the Democratic party,” Shapiro said of the vote.

He displayed images of a 12-week unborn baby and then an unborn baby at eight weeks.

“You can see this baby with his hands near his chest,” he said of the 12-week image. “This is not a cluster of cells. His liver and spleen are producing red blood cells. This is an unborn human being. But not a single federally-elected Democrat would vote for an abortion ban that would protect this babies life.

“Life does not begin at 14 weeks,” Shapiro continued. “Life doesn’t begin at eight weeks either. It begins at fertilization, when a new human life is born – a new human being with its own DNA. Human life is a continuous process of growth from the moment of fertilization onward.”

Post-Abortive Pro-Choicer Saw His Baby’s Ultrasound and Became Pro-Life

“I want to meet the person who says that’s not a baby, because there is no doubt that’s a baby!”…

The book Surprised by Life by Patrick Madrid is a collection of stories from people who converted to Catholicism. One story, told by a man named Chris Aubert, describes how a post-abortive pro-choice man became a passionate pro-lifer.

After graduating law school, Aubert dated a string of women. His first encounter with abortion occurred when a young woman he had broken up with started calling him. The relationship had been casual, and he was ready to move on, so he ignored her phone calls. Then one evening, Aubert accidentally picked up the phone without screening the call, and spoke to her. She said she had something urgent to tell him, and, after she insisted, he reluctantly agreed to meet with her:

When I got there, this girl – who had not been a serious girlfriend – sat me on the couch and matter-of-factly blurted out, “Chris, I’m pregnant.” Before I could absorb the news, she added, “and I want to get an abortion.”

At that time for me, marriage was not in the cards, either with her or anyone else. Marriage would’ve blocked my path to money and power…. So I gladly agreed with her decision to abort, using the same excuses we hear today: “It’s just a blob of unviable tissue”; “It’s her body, and she can do with it what she pleases”; “I’m too young”; “I’m not ready to have children”; and the old standby, “This is America, and our Supreme Court says abortion is legal!”

The woman asked Aubert if he would go with her to the abortion facility. Aubert declined. He felt it was her problem, not his. All he did was write a check for the cost of the abortion. Rather then give his ex-girlfriend the check face to face, he dropped it off when he knew she would not be home.

Aubert never spoke to the woman again, and he didn’t think much about the abortion. Sometime later, he found himself dating another woman. In this case, the relationship was more serious. She too got pregnant, and decided to get an abortion. This time, though, he went with her to the facility. Afterwards, he took her to lunch. But he felt uneasy:

At lunch, we didn’t talk much about what we just done. Mainly, I remember the silence. Although I had freely and even eagerly agreed to the second abortion, something about it felt wrong, but I didn’t know what. I also began thinking again about the first abortion. Nonetheless, apart from an occasional awkward feeling, they had no lasting effect on me.

The relationship did not last. Aubert explains that he had no reason to think abortion was wrong. He had never really been exposed to pro-life information, and what he saw portrayed in the media never made him question abortion. He said, 

“Everywhere I turned, abortion was portrayed as the enlightened position in tough situations faced by women who just wanted autonomy over their bodies.”

Eventually, Aubert met and married his wife, and she became pregnant. When they went for an ultrasound, Aubert’s whole life changed:

When [the wife] was about eight weeks pregnant, I saw for the first time in my life in the ultrasound waiting room a fetal development chart and was stunned by what it showed.

Before I could process this information, we were called into the ultrasound room. On the screen was that supposedly unviable tissue mass moving around, right before my eyes. I couldn’t believe it, and I pointed at the screen excitedly and said out loud,

“I want to meet the person who says that’s not a baby, because there is no doubt that’s a baby!”…

Instantly, I understood the evil of abortion and was flooded with shame and sorrow for having been instrumental in the deaths of two of my own little babies.

Literally only minutes earlier I had been pro-choice; now I was pro-life.

How Can You Feel an Unborn Baby Kick and Not Realize Abortion is Wrong?

I became “pro-life” long before I realized that abortion had been legalized nationwide in 1973. And I didn’t even know it.

Though it more than five decades ago, I still can recall that moment in 1964. My mom, over 40 and already the mother of myself and my five younger siblings, encouraged me to touch her by-then prominent belly and then place my ear on it.

Talk about black and white becoming Technicolor. The abstraction that my youngest brother had been previously had now become a concrete, living, moving human being. Wow.

That vivid memory was the first thing that crossed my mind when I read, “A Baby’s Kick Changes Everything about Abortion,” by Georgi Boorman.

After I read the post, it occurred to me how infrequently we talk about an unborn baby’s first kick these days, what we used to call “quickening.” Because ultrasound pictures are almost ubiquitous (and take place earlier in pregnancy), comparatively little attention is paid to that moment which occurs somewhere around the 20th week.

Boorman’s baby packs a wallop. As she writes,

No, it’s not comfortable. No, it doesn’t feel “natural,” not because it isn’t, but because there’s nothing I’ve felt quite like it. My husband told me our baby never felt more real than after she started kicking. The ultrasounds were beautiful, especially seeing her heartbeat. But it was still more conceptual at that point. When you feel her move, it’s like she’s saying, “I’m here! I’m real! I’ll be out in the world soon!”

Then, a few paragraphs later

For the first time in my life, the life of my baby is more than a concept, and so now all my reactions to pro-abortion articles are physical, not just intellectual or even emotional.

The Ever-Growing List of Ways My Life Would Have Been So Much Less Fulfilling if I Hadn’t Chosen Life for My Life for My Unborn Child

Without You....I would have missed the many things God had intended for me all along. He used you, in many ways, to lead me.

Most abortion clinics require that you have an ultrasound before they issue you the [abortifacient] pill or set you up for “surgery.” This is because the ultrasound helps determine if the baby is still small enough (less than 10 weeks) to be aborted with the pill or if surgery will be required.

It is for this reason I always become very anxious before performing an ultrasound on the girls whom the pregnancy center has previously deemed “abortion-minded” or “abortion-vulnerable.” I know that regardless of how well I do the ultrasound, or what I say, they will still leave our clinic and be faced with a decision only they can make.

I’ve been doing weekly ultrasounds for about eight months now, and just recently had my very first client who ultimately chose abortion. I had been warned that the girls who had their heart set on abortion would refuse to even look at the screen. But it didn’t stop my heart from aching for her to just look once at the small, wiggling arms and legs, the button nose, and the vigorously beating heart.

Although my heart wasn’t set on abortion with sweet A, I couldn’t help but relate to our client when she said, “I just hate myself for what I have done.” Then her tears were my tears, her shame was my shame and her overwhelming fear was so familiar.

I may never know or understand her reasons for the choice she made, but I am confident in the One who hears the prayers I have said and will continue to say for her.

What I do know is that at some point her ideas of what life would be like without that child may have outweighed her ideas of what it would be like to keep it. In the midst of that indescribable fear and shame, I can say that the list of reasons to go without that baby can definitely appear to be longer and better.

Now on the other end, I can see a million and one reasons why that list is deceiving.

In fact, I have an ever-growing list of ways my life would have been so much less fulfilling without you, my daughter.

Without you, there would have never been that instant, inexplicable explosion of love on the day you were born. That day in July would merely be another day without significance at all.

Without you, there would have been fewer sleepless nights, but more nights alone. Your fingers wrapped in my hair, head on my shoulder, and heart beating against my chest would be a feeling I’d miss completely.

Without you, there would have been more money and free time, but a whole lot less joy. Your laughter and delight are my daily reward.

Without you, there would have been more travel and life experiences, but I would have missed so many more firsts. Your first laugh, your first walk across the room, your first word, your first day of school, your first soccer goal, your first everything.

Without you, I would have been so focused on the future I thought was best for me, I would have missed the many things God had intended for me all along. He used you, in many ways, to lead me.

Without you, I may have continued living the life I thought was meant for me, and would have never known the life I lived was even more meant for you.

Without you is a life I can no longer even imagine, because your life has made mine all the more worth living.

Colorado Democrats Block Chance for Women to View Ultrasound Prior to an Abortion

For the second time in recent legislative sessions, Colorado Democrats blocked HB18 — “A Women’s Right To Accurate Healthcare Information”—that would have “required physicians to inform women seeking to abort that they can conduct and view an ultrasound prior to aborting, as well as listen to the heartbeat of their unborn child,” according to the Daily Caller.

The bill failed 7-6 vote in the Health, Insurance and Environment Committee with all Democrats voting against and all Republicans in favor.

Lead sponsor Rep. Lori Saine, R-Dacono, told committee members that “the measure would help ensure that women are fully informed when they seek an abortion.”

HB18 would have ensured that “a woman has the opportunity to see or forego seeing her ultrasound, and required women seeking to abort receive full information about the procedural elements and risks of abortion,” according to Grace Carr. “The bill also posited that women seeking to abort and decide to have an ultrasound can choose between an abdominal or vaginal ultrasound.”

Prior to Thursday’s committee hearing, The Rev. Dr. Dawn Riley Duval called the bill an “unconscionable” barrier to reproductive health services, the Colorado Independent reported.

Testing for Down Syndrome, When Woman Sees Ultrasound, She Realizes She’s Pregnant With “a Little Person”

From a woman who was being tested to see if her baby had Down syndrome or another handicap; she had been considering abortion if the baby was discovered to be disabled. She’s describing what she saw on the ultrasound:

“I was on this incredible high, like I saw the head and the little shoulders and then I came home and I suddenly crashed because I thought, there was this little person, I mean, it looked like a little person. And I was more upset than I’d ever been because what would I do? You know, would I have an abortion? Because here I’ve seen it, and it looks like a little person.”

Congressman Shows Ultrasound of 18-Week-Old Unborn Baby During Hearing, Abortion Activists Look Away

"...but the ultrasound proves beyond any doubt that Life is present every time there is a Heartbeat."

During a Congressional hearing today on a bill to ban abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy, a pro-life Congressman showed an ultrasound of an 18-week-old unborn baby. Congressman Steve King of Iowa showed the ultrasound and audio of the baby’s heartbeat.

During the footage, Rep. Pramila Jayapal can be seen frequently looking away from the screen and avoiding watching it. Meanwhile pro-abortion Yale Professor Priscilla Smith stares straight ahead pretty much the entire time the ultrasound is shown.

King’s office says it’s the first time an unborn babies has “testified” before Congress.

“On November 1, 2017, Chairman Steve King allowed the testimony of unborn child Lincoln Glenn Miller, via ultrasound, into the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice Hearing on HR 490, the Heartbeat Protection Act. It is believed that Miller, aged 18 weeks, is the youngest person to ever offer testimony at a Congressional hearing,” King’s office said.

King said: “The 14th Amendment codifies the language of our Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson set up prioritized rights in our Declaration with this more familiar language, “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” 

"In both cases, Life is the paramount right and cannot be taken without due process. Liberty is a right secondary to Life. No one in exercising their right to Liberty has a legitimate Constitutional or moral claim to take the Life of another."

"The question before us, since America has held the right to Life as a sacred right from God (endowed by their Creator), the question before us is not, “Can the Lives of innocent babies be taken in exercising the right to the Liberty of the mother?” But rather, “At what instant does Life begin?” Science cannot precisely pinpoint the instant of conception but the ultrasound proves beyond any doubt that Life is present every time there is a Heartbeat."

"The promises of our Founding Fathers must be restored to the voiceless and most vulnerable. Liberty can never again become the excuse to take the Life of another.”

Miranda Was Pressured to Have an Abortion, But One Thing Saved Her Baby’s Life

"I said, this is a true, living thing. It’s not just a clump of cells that’s not moving and not living."

One of the scariest things for a teenager to face is an unexpected crisis pregnancy. And that’s exactly the situation Miranda found herself in. She wasn’t ready to be a mother. Her boyfriend was pressuring her to have an abortion. But thanks to one simple action from a nurse at a pregnancy resource center, Miranda’s preborn baby was saved.

“I bought a pregnancy test. I took it and it said positive, and I was shocked,” Miranda recalled. “I was like, ‘how could this happen to me?'” So Miranda contacted her boyfriend to let him know that she was pregnant. “And he said, ‘Okay, don’t worry about it. We’ll take care of it’,” she continued. He wanted her to have an abortion.

At first, Miranda didn’t question his decision. 

“I was finishing school, you know, I had my life ahead of me,” she explained. “How was I going to have a baby? How was I going to get pregnant and how was I going to explain it to my parents?” 

Miranda went to one of her friends for support, who went online to find resources for her. She found a pregnancy center, and that was where Miranda went. That visit would be what saved her baby’s life.

“The last thing that they did during the visit was give me an ultrasound,” she said. “And I could see on the screen next to me that there was this little… it looked like a bean. I called it a jumping bean. And it was just moving around, and it was jumping up and down. And so right at that moment, I changed my mind and I saw — I said, this is a true, living thing. It’s not just a clump of cells that’s not moving and not living. There is something living and growing and moving inside me already.”

Miranda eventually told her mother, who recommended that she go to Focus on the Family. “I started becoming more open to adoption,” Miranda said. “I knew that I needed another option, because parenting wasn’t going to be the best option for me.” 

So she met a couple, and began considering an open adoption plan with them. Nine months later, she gave birth to Hope, a healthy baby girl, who now attends elementary school and is being raised by Susan and Alex, the couple Miranda chose to be Hope’s parents.

Genetic “Counselor” Prevents Abortion Minded Women From Seeing Sonograms

Genetic “counselors” are medical personnel that walk women and their partners though testing (usually amniocentesis) to see if their unborn babies have a genetic illness or disability. 

If a woman is at risk for having a baby with a disability, or if they already know that they are pregnant with one, these genetic counselors are supposed to be unbiased in helping them decide whether or not to abort. In reality, there are subtle ways that this type of “counselor” can influence a woman’s decision.

From one genetic counselor [Felicia Arcana]:

As a counselor, I consider it my job to accompany my patients to everything. The sonographer here at City is a right to lifer. When he knows someone has a positive diagnosis, that they are going to abort, he hands them a photo of the fetus. Imagine being forced to take it, to take that picture, when you know the pregnancy is Down’s, you know you’re going to abort!

Abortion proponents and providers know the power of ultrasound, and many of them have the desire to shield women from seeing the truth about their unborn babies. Clearly, this activist doesn’t want the woman to be swayed against abortion.

One might think that a woman would want (and a medical professional provide) every single bit of information she can get about her own body and her pregnancy that affects her health and future. But abortion proponents encourage women to make these decisions without seeing their babies on an ultrasound and knowing the development of their child.

Even if a woman is reluctant to see an ultrasound of her baby, what happens when years down the line she becomes pregnant again, sees that ultrasound, and realizes that the “product of conception/tissue/collection of cells” that she aborted has a face and hands, and little arms and legs?

Next to Abortion Mill, Pregnancy Center Helping Moms Fall in Love with Their Babies via Ultrasound

When Jessica saw her son, Jayden, for the first time via ultrasound in 2014, the “crisis” of her unplanned pregnancy took an immediate back seat. She had fallen in love, and there was no going back.

Working a full-time job and planning to start college the next semester, Jessica would have been an easy target for the abortion industry and its Duluth outpost—kitty-corner from Women’s Care Center. Instead, she’s now the mother of a 3-year-old and pursuing her newfound goal of working with babies in the medical field.

“The ultrasound made it so real,” Jessica said. “He kept moving his little arms like, ‘Hey, I’m here!’”

Adding a new, upgraded ultrasound machine this summer, Women’s Care Center is hoping the machine’s 4-D capabilities will help even more women like Jessica fall in love and choose life for their babies.

Jennifer Woodall, executive director for Women’s Care Center of Duluth, told reporters at a local Fox affiliate the donation was “an incredible blessing,” especially considering the need represented by Duluth’s poverty rate—which is 10 percent higher than the state’s average.

“Being able to offer this no matter what their financial background is or whether they have health insurance or not—it’s a way to give back to our community,” Woodall said.

The machine was donated by a local chapter of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization that has raised over $36 million to place 752 ultrasound units at local pregnancy help medical clinics in all 50 U.S. states since 2009.

Located just across the street from the only abortion mill in Northern Minnesota, Women’s Care Center of Duluth is part of a 25-site group that serves in five Midwestern states.

Since opening its doors in March of 2013 the center has performed more than 800 free ultrasounds and reached over 1,500 individual clients just a matter of steps from an abortion business that claimed 398 preborn lives in 2015.

Mapi Cancelled Her Abortion After Finding Support at a Pregnancy Help Clinic

In February 2007 I found myself in an unexpected pregnancy.

I was alone in this country trying to make it on my own. I was not married and I was not sure how the baby’s father was going to handle the news.

I went to a doctor and he told me that I was at a 90% risk of having a Down Syndrome baby because I was 35 years old. He recommended that I have an abortion. I felt all alone, desperate and all I could do was cry.

As I was driving home, I turned the radio on and there was a gentle voice answering questions at a Christian talk show. She was saying how this organization could help women with an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy. She said that Heartbeat of Miami Pregnancy Help Medical Clinics could help. I was not sure how they could help but I was desperate.

When I called the number, I spoke to Martha who told me that they could offer alternatives to women that did not want or could not have their baby. She asked to meet with me just to talk and share with me the options that I had.

I had already made an appointment with an abortion clinic but I decided to meet with Martha first. She arranged for me to have an ultrasound. That is when I saw my baby for the first time and heard her heartbeat. The ladies in the clinic treated me with much love, dignity and respect, never judging me and giving me the opportunity to see my baby. 

They offered to help me with different resources and also a plan of adoption. They spoke about faith, about life. Even if my baby was indeed Down Syndrome, there were people willing to adopt her. At that very moment I knew I did not want an abortion. How could I end the life of my baby?

Why Ultrasounds Put the Fear of God into Planned Parenthood

Having reached mid-week, we are continuing to post about the extraordinary National Right to Life convention, held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This post is motivated by the workshops on state legislation and their capacity to touch, motivate, and shape the moral imagination.

When the speakers mentioned ultrasounds I instantly thought back to a lovely piece that appeared at “First Things” online. “Visualizing the Human” was written by Victor Lee Austin and is a morally imaginative way of talking about how the revelatory power of ultrasound is expanding our visual imagination.

Austin, a theologian-in-residence at St. Thomas Church in New York City, writes about his mother’s pregnancy when he was six years old. “I was allowed to feel [her “swollen belly”], and feel through it some particular bumps. ‘The baby’s kicking you,’ I was told.”

Adding enormous poignancy to his account is that his sister was stillborn and his mother died in childbirth. Reflecting back a half-century ago, Austin writes of his sister that “her human reality was more hypothetical than actual. I had, and have, never seen her.”

That is all changing now! Austin writes

“Every young expectant couple I know today, without exception, when they have a prenatal visit, hope they will get to see the baby. Every baby’s photo book today has a sonogram for its first picture. The first pictures, and there are often many of them, are prenatal.

 “And it is changing how parents talk about their child. ‘Our little guy,’ one couple recently told me, ‘he’s as big as my thumb.’ Or: ‘Our baby would now fit in the palm of my hand.’ They delight in seeing the baby’s limb, the head, the sex, even fingers. They delight in seeing the heart and looking into its chambers.
