University Women’s Center Removes Pro-Life Students’ Blog Post Because It Challenged Its Views

A pro-life University of Idaho student recently saw her blog post removed by the campus Women’s Center because it supposedly conflicted with the center’s “fundamental principles.”

Campus Reform reports Students for Life student leader Victoria Diloné’s blog post eventually was republished, but the matter exposed continuing concerns about campus censorship of pro-life and conservative viewpoints.

Diloné, who is an intern at the Women’s Center, wrote the blog post about eugenics, Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger and hormonal birth control. She recently posted her essay on the center’s blog after a student editor approved it.

Soon afterward, center director Lysa Salsbury wrote an email to Diloné saying that her blog post would be removed, according to Students for Life.
“On more than one occasion, your personal views have been in direct conflict with one of the fundamental principles and tenets of feminism—that of choice,” Salsbury wrote. “Your article is not only not congruent with the Women’s Center’s views on the topic, it directly challenges them. As such, we cannot publish it. I’m sorry.”
Diloné said she was surprised, especially because she had not hidden her pro-life views when she applied for the internship. What’s more, she said Salsbury encouraged her to apply.
“When I applied to the Center, I was upfront that I was active in the Students for Life group, and no one raised an issue then,” she told Students for Life. “It’s unfortunate that the Women’s Center has decided that feminism means we can’t debate issues like birth control or how to best help women. I will continue to share my beliefs and won’t be intimidated.”
She said Salsbury also prohibited her from writing about pro-life pregnancy centers and diversity within the pro-life movement.

Students for Life contacted the university about the problem, and eventually Diloné’s post reappeared on the blog.

Charlie Gard’s Parents and Supporters Say Facebook and Twitter Censoring Their Accounts

Supporters who run two prominent social media pages for British infant Charlie Gard say they are being censored.

The people who organize the pages “Charlie’s army” on Facebook and @fight4charlie on Twitter said some of their posts have been blocked, and others who used the hashtag #SaveCharlieGard said their accounts were suspended, the Daily Mail reports. Still others said their messages of support were marked as “spam.”

Members of Charlie’s family appear to be the ones running the Twitter page, according to the Mirror.
“Twitter is censoring this page. Please head over to @charliesfight new page! And get tweeting like crazy! We need your help! #charliegard,” a post on @fight4charlie said Thursday morning.
Charlie is suffering from a rare disease, and his parents want to take him to the United States for an experimental treatment. His case gained international attention as his parents fought a series of court battles for their son, but ultimately lost.

Last week, the European Court of Human Rights ruled against his parents’ appeal to take him to the U.S. A British court also ruled that his life support can be removed against his parents’ wishes.

Prayers and support for Charlie have been flooding in from across the world, including from Pope Francis and U.S. President Donald Trump. Hundreds of people protested the court ruling in London over the weekend. Another protest is planned for this week.

Some supporters who had their accounts suspended said the social media sites did unlock their accounts after they complained.

Censored Pro-Life Students Hit the Headlines

Students from Strathclyde Life Action say the ban violates
their right to free speech.

Editor’s note. The University of Strathclyde is in Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland. This post comes from our friends at SPUC–The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children.

Pro-life students at the University of Strathclyde have been making the media after their Students Union banned them from forming an official society

Strathclyde Life Action have been struggling for official recognition for two years, and the University of Strathclyde Students Association (USSA) has now passed a motion banning “anti-choice groups,” saying that they harass students and violate their “safe space.”

The story has now been picked up by the BBC, the Times and other outlets. The Express ran with the headline University bans pro-life group as it would violate safe space of students with uteruses.

The issue also appeared on BBC Scotland News, where a sociologist and a former MP both deplored the rise of censorship on university campuses, and defended the pro-life society’s right to free speech.

Strathclyde Life Action said that the policy violated their right to free speech under the European Convention of Human Rights, and have vowed to fight the decision.
“We believe life begins at fertilization,” said Jamie McGowan, a law student who is part of the group. “That’s not a radical position and all we want is to be allowed to speak about it and have an opportunity to present an argument.”
