A Mom who Chose Life and the Grandmother who Saved Her Grandson

from Susan O'Neill, Eastern Program Coordinator
Sidewalk Advocates for Life

As an advisor on the National Team for half of our sidewalk advocacy locations around the globe, I recently paid a visit, as I so often do, to one of our locations-in-need, Stamford, CT, who was dealing with some persecution on the sidewalk. My goal was to help them navigate some legal questions with our attorney in tow and be an encouragement to their amazing team.

I will never forget that early June morning. Tom, one of the co-leaders, stopped a vehicle coming into the abortion facility.

The first thing I noticed was the Uber sticker. The windows in the back were tinted, but I could see that Tom was speaking to whomever was in the backseat.

Another vehicle was approaching so the Uber pulled into the parking area. A young couple and a little girl got out of the vehicle and headed into the abortion facility. Tom called out to the man, asking him to please come and speak to us, letting him know we would help them. Instead, they went inside.

Across the street, a group of prayer warriors had gathered and were praying. More women began arriving. It was looking to be a busy morning, but I couldn’t get that couple with the little girl out of my mind. I bowed my head and prayed they would come and speak with us.

When I raised my head, I saw the abortion facility's door open ...and out came the cutest little girl in a pink jacket. A young man following close behind, scooped her up in his arms, and they came into the parking lot. Tom and I began to wave them over with smiles on our faces.

We realized we needed a translator because dad only spoke Spanish. Thanks be to God, two of the prayer warriors across the street spoke Spanish and one was a trained Sidewalk Advocate! We quickly got them over to translate for us.

We learned that this couple had what seemed like the entire world against them. They didn’t have money for rent that was coming due, dad had not been able to find a job, they already had a small child to care for, and they were both worried. I let dad know how even though these problems loomed large right now, they were temporary and could be changed — but what was going to happen if mom didn’t come out, that would be irrevocable.

At this point, we had dad texting mom inside the facility, asking her to come see what we had to say. Soon he had her on the phone and we were passing it around, each of the Sidewalk Advocates speaking words of encouragement to her.

Over my shoulder, I noticed the prayer warriors had re-positioned themselves directly across the street from us and were fervently praying for our outreach to this young couple. I could feel the strength of their prayers covering us.

After what seemed like an eternity, I saw mom emerge from the doors of Planned Parenthood. Once she stepped onto the sidewalk, I threw my arms around her and whispered in her ear that she was doing the right thing. I could tell we still had some convincing to do, but she was here!

After explaining how we could help, I suggested they let us take them out to lunch. They agreed, and we all went out for pizza — yes, the family and all of the Stamford, CT Sidewalk Advocates! By the time our meal was over, I saw completely different people than the ones that arrived in the Uber that morning. For the first time, they had let themselves entertain the idea of having their precious child. I could see them physically beginning to relax and even smile.

Before we parted ways that day, we put some money in dad's hands to show him we meant it when we said we would help. Tears immediately sprang to his eyes. We exchanged hugs and promised to be in touch, filling each of their needs, one by one — which we did!

Fast forward a couple of months. They got married! Sidewalk Advocates for Life assisted them in moving into a new apartment, helped dad get a job, and got them connected with legal counsel to answer some questions.

Just this past weekend, I had the honor of throwing a baby shower for their BABY BOY due in December. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, every single item on their baby registry was purchased. There is nothing they are going to need for baby!

At the baby shower, I met mom's grandmother — yes, the grand-grandmother of this baby boy — and grandma shared with me something incredibly powerful. She said that when she heard her granddaughter had made an appointment for an abortion (besides trying to encourage a decision for life with her words, of course), she prayed and fasted that someone would show up and convince her not to go through with it! She even went so far as to sleep on the floor for several days as part of her fasting, offering it all up for her granddaughter and great-grandchild. When I met her at the shower, she was overflowing with gratitude and joy — even though I couldn't understand anything she was saying in Spanish! What an amazing lady.

I also found out more details regarding that day and mom's scheduled abortion appointment: When they had arrived, it was their second time there; they had already been there once and were completely sold out on following through. Mom had already filled out the paperwork, and she was in line for her abortion with 8-9 other women. She had been so close to going through with it, but it was the sincerity of our love and tears (and, no doubt, prayers) that caused them to reconsider.

Even though I don't speak Spanish, Mom and I have figured out a way to keep in touch regularly. She tells me that I am her angel God sent and that her entire family was saved that day. I have even been asked to attend the baby’s birth! What an honor. (I'm looking forward to that "I'm in labor!" phone call this December!)

But I tell her it is me who is blessed to have had the privilege of being a vessel for the Holy Spirit that day, working as a team with our amazing Sidewalk Advocates in Stamford. Indeed, I was honored to be one of many who played a part in God’s perfect plan to convict their hearts on the sidewalk. I am so grateful to Tom, Noelle, and their team of Sidewalk Advocates who said YES to God through this ministry and have chosen to persevere through many challenges on the sidewalk!

Love IS truly ending abortion, one mother, one family at a time. Thank you all for supporting Sidewalk Advocates for Life and being a part of this incredible, life-saving journey with us!

The Vision and Mission of Sidewalk Advocates for Life is to train, equip, and support local communities across the United States and the world in “sidewalk advocacy”: to be the hands and feet of Christ, offering loving, life-affirming alternatives to all present at the abortion center, thereby eliminating demand and ending abortion. 10 More Babies Saved! 1500 Babies Save so far Through Sidewalk Advocates for Life

Lauren Muzyka, Executive Director
Sidewalk Advocates for Life

We pray. We work hard. We persevere. And one day, the Lord shows us exactly how our sacrifices have paid off!

Recently, one of our national team members opened her inbox one morning to a message from one of our Sidewalk Advocates for Life locations in Alabama... and found a beautiful picture collage of 10 precious babies saved from abortion through the power of God's love and peaceful outreach on the sidewalk!

When we look at the beautiful faces of these precious children — just 10 of the 1,500 babies saved thus far in this ministry — one thing is clear: Something here is working, it's saving lives, and we have to ensure that this work continues well into the future!

Sidewalk Advocates for Life takes a peaceful, prayerful, law-abiding approach to reaching out to those servicing the abortion center. We seek to be the hands & feet of Christ and to ‘stand in the gap’ for those who, ironically, may feel they have no choice. While we provide crisis intervention on the sidewalk to women in unplanned pregnancies headed into the abortion center, we recognize that our outreach can only go so far: we must offer her real, ongoing help or crisis management. Our interaction never ends without offering her life-affirming alternatives such as help from the local pregnancy resource center(s) and other organizations in her local community.

For more information or to make a donation,, please use this link. Your support has helped make moments like this possible. God continues to show us that if we say YES to Him – and we persevere – He will show us amazing victories!

Story of a Baby Saved by Sidewalk Advocates for Life

Lauren Muzyka, Executive Director
Sidewalk Advocates for Life

Another miraculous story from the sidewalk to share with you -- this one from the Southeast! Our program director in that area shared the following with us...

"I'm happy to report a woman with an appointment for an abortion of her 3rd child made the decision to cancel her appointment and go to the (pregnancy center). One of our (Sidewalk Advocates) spoke to her and her husband for about 20-30 minutes after she directed them to a grassy spot next to the Planned Parenthood driveway. (She) spoke to them in Spanish and shared some personal family history, as well as presented the 'Watch Me Grow' pamphlet and fetal model, as she spoke words of help and encouragement to the couple. The woman and her husband left to their new appointment with (the pregnancy center), wearing huge smiles in their joyous decision for life! We all feel blessed!"

After two years of ministry, we can tell you that these amazing stories never get old!

Here's what's even more amazing: When it comes to this incredible journey that the Lord has called us to on the sidewalk ...this is now business as usual.

In fact, just about every day -- thanks to your prayers and support -- we get a story or two like this! Since we started just over two years ago, we've witnessed almost 1,400 babies saved ...among other miracles!

Your support has helped make moments like this possible. God continues to show us that if we say YES to Him – and we persevere – He will show us amazing victories!

Sidewalk Advocates for Life - Stories from the Sidewalk

from Lauren Muzyka, Executive Director
Sidewalk Advocates for Life

This was a story I couldn't wait to share with you!

Several weeks ago, at one of our locations, something miraculous happened. One of our program directors had been praying and sidewalk counseling regularly at her local abortion facility; she frequently sought to make contact with the abortion workers, offering them help from And Then There Were None abortion worker ministry.

One day, she decided to go out to the abortion facility, even though she had been sick and lost her voice. When she arrived at the abortion facility, she thought, "Well, I can't call out to the workers to say hi since I don't have a voice, so I'll get on my knees and pray for them." She did just that.

What she didn't know was that a worker -- who she had spoken with previously -- was watching from inside. When this worker saw her on her knees, they thought, "I'm a Christian, and she is, too. But she's on her knees out there praying ...and I'm in here doing this. I'm a hypocrite."

That worker packed up their stuff, quit on the spot, and walked out to embrace those on the sidewalk! (This person is now in the care of And Then There Were None abortion worker ministry!)

Praise God! What the worker needed that day was a silent witness, blessed by the power of prayer. But no doubt, the conversations leading up to this moment were monumental as they had served to plant seeds, establishing her as a witness to Christ and someone who could truly help!

This is why this work is so important. What if someone hadn't been there?

This is a question that haunts me daily. How many other abortion facilities out there have no one, trained and equipped, to reach out to abortion-bound women and men? How many workers have no one to offer them a way out of the abortion business?

Sidewalk Advocates for Life currently covers 11-12% of U.S. abortion facilities -- truly amazing after just 23 months of ministry -- but we must close the gap and get this life-saving program into as many hands as possible!

This is why I need your help: We are financially stretched to the max, and we cannot expand without your support! When you make a donation to the work ofSidewalk Advocates for Life, you'll not only provide support to our current locations as we grow our training and support program, but you'll provide the means for this work to rapidly expand across the country.

Just this past month, we approved about 10 new locations -- and about 6 of them didn't have the money to pay for their training materials. However, we readily accepted them into the program, believing that God would provide for these programs through your generosity!

Friend, I'm humbly asking you to partner with us in this great work! Can you make a small sacrifice to help save even more lives? I thank you for making whatever sacrifice possible today so that others may live! Click on the button below to make a donation.

Sidewalk Advocates for Life's Video #1 of the Advanced Training Series!!

"Thriving on the Sidewalk: Taking Care of Yourself Spiritually"

from Rita Smith, (Missionaries of the Gospel of Life), Campaign Director,
40 Days for Life/Norristown,
Program Director, Sidewalk Advocates for Life/Norristown

The Sidewalk Advocates for Life was implemented by myself this past summer in an effort to effectively and with confidence counsel women/men in a crisis pregnancy entering Norristown's Planned Parenthood. For more information, use this link to Sidewalk Advocates for Life website. It is an amazing blessing for our local community in giving those in crisis the kind and loving help with pro-life alternatives/information that they so desperately need.

I am very grateful to Theresa, Annette, Brooke, Kathy, David, Luke, Marie, Mary, Melissa, Matt, Jason and Gideon who have taken the Sidewalk Advocacy Training at my home this past summer. Organizational folders that are very coordinated and functional with life saving literature were distributed to all the Sidewalk Advocates for Life/Norristown attendees. A few people have decided to become prayer partners and we are all so ever thankful to them.

For those of you who will view the video and feel that you are called in becoming a Sidewalk Advocate for Life, please let me know and I'll set up a Sidewalk Advocacy Training class at my home.

The next set of advanced training videos are being released. I am very excited to share with many pro-life prayer warriors this particular video sent to me by Lauren Mauzyka, Executive Director, Sidewalk Advocates for Life.
from Lauren Muzyka, Executive DirectorSidewalk Advocates for Life
We are so excited to share with you Video #1 from our brand new Advanced Training Series, "Thriving on the Sidewalk: Taking Care of Yourself Spiritually"!

As promised, this is just one of twenty videos that we'll be releasing to all of you, gradually, in Sidewalk Advocates for Life over the next couple months in an effort to take your sidewalk training to the next level -- so exciting!!
Video link: https://vimeo.com/154136565  (In the future, this will be housed in our Online Training HQ, but for now, will be featured at this link on Vimeo.)

As you know this project was an incredible collaboration between many national pro-life leaders, garnering their advice and insight on a variety of topics that affect sidewalk advocacy. This particular video includes advice from Former Planned Parenthood Director Abby Johnson, Former Planned Parenthood Manager Ramona Trevino, Pro-Life Wisconsin State Director Dan Miller ...and more!
Since we have already shared this one video as a sample with the world, feel free to share with not only your Sidewalk Advocates, but everyone you know as we know it might be a blessing and inspiration to everyone in pro-life ministry -- or inspire others to join us on the sidewalk! (Note: The other videos we will ask and remind you to keep "in house," between Sidewalk Advocates for training purposes; those will also be password protected. However, this video is the exception.)
Thank you for your many prayers, hard work and financial support of this ministry that has made this incredible project possible! We cannot wait for you to see the rest of the videos -- after a little more editing, they are coming soon!
The mission of Sidewalk Advocates for Life is to train, equip, and support local communities across the United States and the world in “sidewalk advocacy”: to be the hands and feet of Christ, offering loving, life-affirming alternatives to all present at the abortion center, thereby eliminating demand and ending abortion.

Explosive Blessings Through the Power of Prayer!

from Chantel Poisel
Communications Coordinator
Sidewalk Advocates for Life

I can hardly believe that another year is already upon us! I pray that as you reflect on 2015 and look forward to 2016 that you are just as excited as we are to see what the Lord does this coming year!

2015 brought many blessings to our ministry on the sidewalk! Here are just a few...
  • Our number of Sidewalk Advocates for Life locations grew to 80 across the globe;
  • Our National Team grew to better meet the needs of our current locations;
  • One location recently reported that their abortion facility is closing in February while another now has an abortionist that can no longer perform abortions;
  • Several of our locations are reporting reduced number of operational days and / or hours at the abortion facility due to decreased business since they started;
  • We're seeing an increased number of volunteers wanting to get involved in this life-saving ministry;
  • And we have now recorded over 970 lives spared from abortion -- not including turn-a-ways and hopefuls (visit our website here to see stats) -- that we know of!
When we have so many faithful people praying together for an end to abortion, so many serving as the hands and feet of Jesus on the sidewalks as they bring hope and healing to women-in-crisis, and so many cheering on this vital, life-saving work ...we have every reason to be hopeful and expect great things!

Why are we seeing such explosive blessings on the sidewalk? We believe that it comes, first and foremost, from the power of prayer. Truly, the evidence of that belief is right before our eyes in so many ways.

Today, I humbly ask that you join us in prayer throughout 2016, asking the Lord to bless the following petitions...
  • for His blessings and protection on our Sidewalk Advocates, National Team, Board of Directors and Program Advisors;
  • for His presence in every interaction on the sidewalk -- that we may be the hands and feet of Christ to those-in-need;
  • to move our culture away from death and back to life;
  • for an end to abortion;
  • for all of this to be done to bring Glory to Him!
In summary, we pray that as we come together to transform hearts, save lives and bring an end to abortion through the grace of God that we would see explosive blessings in 2016 and beyond!

But Women Need Planned Parenthood ...RIGHT?!

Chantel Poisel, Communications Coordinator
Sidewalk Advocates for Life

In light of the undercover videos exposing the evil of "baby body part trafficking" behind the doors of Planned Parenthood facilities across the country, people are beginning to talk more about the topic of abortion -- and whether there is an actual need for scandal-ridden Planned Parenthood.

One of the biggest arguments many of us have heard is, "But women need the low-cost healthcare services that Planned Parenthood provides!" How does Sidewalk Advocates for Life handle that question?
  • We train our Sidewalk Advocates to solve the problem that brought the woman to the abortion or abortion-referral facility: that no matter the client they encounter on the sidewalk, there is a loving, life-affirming alternative in their community for every need.
  • We train our Sidewalk Advocates to direct all business away from the abortion or abortion-referral facility: how to take each 'service' Planned Parenthood offers and offer the most ethical, low-cost or free service elsewhere, making it attractive for the client to leave and take their business somewhere else in town.

After all, it's easy: Planned Parenthood offers very limited gynecological services at best. Federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs) outnumber Planned Parenthood centers about 20 to 1 -- and they offer everything a Planned Parenthood does and so much more! It's easy to see that scandal-ridden Planned Parenthood is completely and totally replaceable!

Ironically, our Sidewalk Advocates recently had the opportunity to participate in a Q&A call with Former Planned Parenthood Manager Ramona Treviño. One of the points Ramona made on the call was that her Planned Parenthood abortion-referral facility was NOT the cheapest place in town for a simple well-woman exam. (And she noted that this was the case with many other communities, as well!) There were several doctors in town, in addition to the local health department, which offered more comprehensive services at a lower cost! It blew the stereotype out of the water!

Sidewalk Advocates for Life now has 72 locations where men and women are learning the truth about Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry, right on the sidewalk, and are being offered loving, life-affirming, free or low-cost alternatives, getting real help right in the community where they live. So far, by the grace of God, 870 lives have been saved from abortion -- that we know of and 24 abortion workers have had a conversion of heart and mind and left the industry for good!

WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW TO HELP?

1. Pray!
  • Pray for those who are standing outside of the abortion facilities in a spirit of peace as they try to speak the truth-in-love to men and women-in-crisis.
  • Pray for women-in-crisis, that they will be moved by the Holy Spirit and will seek life-affirming alternatives to the crisis that brings them to the abortion clinic in the first place.
  • Pray for those working in the abortion business, that they may have a conversion of heart and mind and leave their jobs.
2. Find a Sidewalk Advocates for Life location near you and get involved.
  • To find a location near you, please visit our website using this link and check out our map of the world with current locations marked by balloons.
  • Participate in the next-nearest training event and learn how you can make a difference.
  • Go out to the facility and either put your training to use, or stand on the sidewalk as a prayer partner for those who are reaching our to women and men at the abortion facility.
  • If there is no location near you, prayerfully discern if YOU are being called to bring this program to your community!

Applications to bring Sidewalk Advocates for Life to YOUR town or city will re-open November 1- 30. If you would like to bring this life-saving training program to your community, simply use this link  and fill out the application. A member of our team will then give you a call to discuss the details with you and help you to get started!

3. Financial Support

Perhaps you feel called to contribute financially to help those who are meeting women on the sidewalk -- so they can get the training and tools they need to help them better meet the needs of women-in-crisis. You can donate to this life-saving work by clicking on the button below.

Thank you so much for joining us in this mission to end abortion! We have been humbled by the amazing things the Lord has already done through this work, and cannot wait to see what He does next!

Sidewalk Advocates for Life - Our Plan to Help End Abortion

from Lauren Muzyka, Executive Director
Sidewalk Advocates for Life

A very wise pro-life leader once told me that if you don't have "ending abortion" in your mission statement and you aren't working to put yourself out of a job ...you're doing something wrong!

If we truly believe that "with God all things are possible," we must believe that His grace is enough to end abortion.

And mysteriously, he chooses to use you and I -- even though we are imperfect instruments. We are told that we are "God's co-workers," meant to bring the "Gospel of Life" to those-in-need.

We don't take this call lightly. After all, in the aftermath of Roe v. Wade which imposed abortion-on-demand on all 50 American states in 1973, our hearts are heavy thinking of the 58 million children who have lost their lives to so-called "safe and legal choice." That also doesn't include the millions who have been wounded by the lie that abortion would solve their problems.

However, we are not a people without hope at all! As one Christian leader has said, "Do not give yourselves over to despair, we are an Easter people and alleluia is our song!" Through Christ's passion, death and resurrection, God has given us everything we need to overcome the problem of abortion -- we just have to say YES to it!

Former abortion providers have let us know that peaceful, prayerful sidewalk counseling was the activity that most devastated their business. We know that, quite often, all an abortion-vulnerable woman needs to hear is, "You have other choices. You don't have to do this today." With a community of love on the sidewalk, kindly and constructively sending women to pregnancy resource centers and to other life-affirming community resources, we have the ability to eliminate demand and slowly chisel away at the abortion business. It is our goal to ensure that no abortion facility in the U.S. (and someday, beyond) goes without peaceful, loving sidewalk helpers every single hour of business!

Knowing this, we started Sidewalk Advocates for Life as an amazing solution, by God's grace, to the problem of abortion. In just 18 months, our organization has grown to 72 locations in the U.S. and around the world and witnessed 837 babies saved, 232 hopefuls, 53 turnaways and 23 abortion workers who left ...and counting! (For an explanation of how we record statistics, please use this link.  God is moving in mighty ways as we say YES to Him!

In order to reach our goal as soon as possible and multiply our effectiveness, we knew we needed to grow our staff. One of the ways that we did this was through our new "Program Coordinator Fellowship" program, raising up a handful of true pro-life missionaries who would develop new Sidewalk Advocacy locations and support current ones, regionally. The Lord answered our prayers when he brought us three incredible women: Bethany, Cera and Heather!

Here's what each wanted to share with you, our dear partners in this great work...
"Hi, my name is Bethany, and I am the new Eastern Program Coordinator for Sidewalk Advocates for Life. My husband and I have two fabulous, active boys and one precious child we hold in our hearts who's in Heaven. We are both natives of Florida; I graduated from the University of South Florida with a B.A. in Religious Studies. I recently sold our family business to answer God's call to do pro-life missionary work! Last fall, while reading Former Planned Parenthood Director Abby Johnson's book, Unplanned, (regarding her conversion from the abortion industry), I, too, was undergoing my own epiphany. God was speaking to me through this book, calling me to get back involved with pro-life work! In my humble opinion, this is the greatest battle, and I am honored and humbled to be serving in this capacity; together, we can convert hearts and save lives!" -- Bethany Mistretta, Eastern Program Coordinator (bethany@sidewalkadvocates.org)
"Hi, my name is Cera, and I am the new Midwestern Program Coordinator for Sidewalk Advocates for Life. My family lives in Massachusetts, but I am getting married and moving to Michigan soon! I recently graduated from Purdue University with a double major in Management and Marketing. Through college I was blessed to be involved with Purdue Students for Life, a local chapter of the national organization. When I first started feeling called to full-time pro-life work, I spoke with a man who worked in the pro-life movement full-time, and he said something which has stuck with me ever since: 'How can we ever hope to defeat abortion when there are so many people working full-time in the pro-choice movement if we don't have people working full-time in the pro-life movement?"' One of my favorite quotes is, 'We are called to be faithful, leave the results up to God.' Another is from Proverbs, 'Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.' You are all an example of this verse, and I am honored to come alongside you in this mission!" -- Cera McCarragher, Midwestern Program Coordinator (cera@sidewalkadvocates.org)
"Hi, I'm Heather, and I am the new Western Program Coordinator for Sidewalk Advocates for Life. I live in Northern California, where I have been involved in the pro-life movement since the age of 11. I am very passionate about pro-life advocacy, and I consider saving lives from abortion to be my life’s mission. I have a background in pro-life work spanning many years and different aspects of the movement. I hold a Life-Affirming Specialist Certification with Heartbeat International, spent time as a support-raiser for California Pro-Life Council (the state affiliate of National Right to Life), ran a Maternity Home for pregnant mothers-in-need, and served as Director of Client Services for TLC Options for Women of Chisago County in Minnesota. For two years, I lived and worked in New York City where I counseled abortion-bound women in front of abortion facilities and in pregnancy centers. We, on the national team, are so impressed with all of the hard work of our local leaders and advocates. Thank you all for braving the elements and long hours to bring hope and life to families-in-need. You are truly my heroes." -- Heather Keevers, Western Program Coordinator (heather@sidewalkadvocates.org)
