When I saw these seven words, they looked like neon – bright and flashing. Not only did I not desire TO be healed, I still felt I did nothing wrong to be healed from. This is not abnormal, everyone wants to be validated for their rotten behavior and choices. After all, it’s all about YOU, isn’t it? If it were not, your baby….MY baby…would be alive today.

Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act Introduced in House of Representatives

I’ve been hopping around between swearing-in receptions for the new pro-life Members of Congress that YOU helped elect. My message to the new Congress is clear:

It’s time to get to work to pass laws that save the lives of unborn children and protect vulnerable women.

And I’m happy to report that things are off to a GREAT start. The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36) has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The bill is being sponsored by two of my closest friends in the House, Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) and Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN). It seeks to protect precious unborn children after 20 weeks, or 5 months of pregnancy, based on their ability to feel excruciating pain.

Remember, if this bill passes the House, the new pro-life Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has promised to bring it up for a Senate vote, unlike his predecessor Harry Reid, who blocked it.

I’ve been working closely with Congressmen Franks and Blackburn on advancing this bill in the new Congress, and I’ve told them both repeatedly that SBA List members across America have their backs.

So the very first thing I need you to do is to instantly email your Representative and ask them to co-sponsor the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36).

You see, your SBA List does not exist solely to elect pro-life politicians to office. That’s only the beginning.

We work to capitalize on our election victories by translating them into legislative victories. Put simply, we work for – and demand – a “return on investment.” When we help elect pro-lifers to Congress we expect them to advance legislation to save babies and their moms from abortion.

Because of the hard work of SBA List – only made possible by your support – the new Congress sworn in today has an even bigger pro-life majority in the House and enjoys pro-life leadership in the Senate for the first time in 8 years.

Assisted Suicide Is Being Pushed in Pennsylvania — Stay Informed

Assisted suicide and euthanasia are no longer distant threats to life. Doctor-prescribed suicide legislation is being discussed in Pennsylvania right now.

Compassion and Choices, formerly the Hemlock Society, is pushing this deadly legislation across the country; and we in the pro-life community are joining voices with medical and disability rights groups to oppose doctor-prescribed suicide in Pennsylvania.

You may hear it euphemistically called death with dignity or aid in dying, but doctor-prescribed suicide is what it is. And it’s a recipe for abuse.

We know from Oregon, where doctor-prescribed suicide is legal, that safeguards don’t work. People who are older or disabled may be pressured into suicide, and others may be denied medical treatment. That’s what happened to Barbara Wagner. In 2008, her Oregon-run insurance plan denied coverage of her chemotherapy treatment. Instead, they offered to cover her assisted suicide.

Abortions in Pennsylvania Drop to All-Time Low

Pennsylvania is entering 2015 with some good news. Abortions dropped to an all-time low in 2013, according to a new report from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

There were 32,108 abortions performed in our state in 2013, a 7-percent drop from 2012. Still, 32,108 is an astoundingly high number of preborn babies who have been killed as a result of abortion. Read more here.

Mario Cuomo's Lessons on Life

Mario Cuomo will be buried tomorrow. The former governor of New York is remembered for many things, but as a Catholic he is most remembered for his 1984 speech at the University of Notre Dame.

In his address, "Religious Belief and Public Morality: A Catholic Governor's Perspective," Cuomo explained why his personal opposition to abortion could not be his public position as governor. Invoking the principle of separation of church and state, he said that in order for Catholic public officials "to assure our freedom we must allow others the same freedom, even if occasionally it produces conduct by them which we would hold to be sinful."

While most of Cuomo's remarks framed abortion as a religious issue, he also recognized the humanity of the unborn child. "For me life or fetal life in the womb should be protected, even if five of nine Justices of the Supreme Court and my neighbor disagree with me." Indeed, he said it demanded "reverence." However, he noted that "not everyone in our society agrees with me and Matilda [his wife]."

In his lengthy speech, Cuomo made only one passing reference to the death penalty. On that subject, which Catholic teaching presumptively opposes, he had no problem adopting the Church's position: he strongly opposed the death penalty and as governor he consistently vetoed legislation that allowed for it. In 2011, he defended his position by saying, "Capital punishment raises important questions about how, as a society, we view human beings."

Cuomo never explained why abortion did not raise the same societal questions about how we treat human beings that capital punishment does. Nor did he explain why it was okay for him to "impose" his Catholic teachings on others when it came to capital punishment but not abortion. Nor did he say why the intentional killing of innocent children should not summon the same legal safeguards that are extended to convicted serial murderers. But these were his lessons on life.

New Year, Old Resolution

DEFEND RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Every January we make new resolutions for the New Year. But maybe we need to return to an old one.

If you’re like six in ten Americans, you make New Year’s resolutions at least some of the time. According to the website Statistic Brain, the top five resolutions are: losing weight, getting organized, spending less and saving more, enjoying life to the fullest, and staying fit and healthy.

Now those are fine resolutions, although they’re all pretty self-directed. But if you’re making resolutions for 2015, let me urge you to consider an old one that hardly makes anyone’s list, but is certainly at the top of mine.

Will you resolve to support religious freedom in 2015? If we don’t do it in this New Year, it just might be too late.

Just think of all that has happened to undermine religious freedom, the first freedom, in 2014. Think about all the Christian bakers and florists who were told to support what are called “same-sex marriages” or face ruinous fines and the loss of their careers.

Or think of Gordon College, a well-regarded evangelical institution that faces the possible loss of accreditation for its biblical beliefs about human sexuality. Gordon President Michael Lindsey, a friend of mine, dared to sign a letter requesting that President Obama include a religious exemption in an executive order that would prohibit discrimination in hiring and employment on the basis of sexual orientation or “gender identity.”

Or, think of the owners of Hobby Lobby, a Christian-run company, or the Catholic Little Sisters of the Poor, being told by the Obama administration that they must provide their employees with drugs that can induce abortions.
