Senate votes on confirmation of Pedro Cortes‏ as Secretary of State of Pennsylvania

from Maria V. Gallagher,Legislative Director
Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation

The Pennsylvania Senate today voted on the confirmation of Pedro Cortes as Secretary of State. As you may recall, during Cortes’ previous stint as Secretary of State during the Rendell Administration, his department did nothing to stop abortionist Kermit Gosnell and his “house of horrors.”

The Senate voted to confirm Cortes by a vote of 31 to 18.

You can see how your state Senator voted by using this link.

I believe our opposition to Cortes helped to put the Wolf Administration on notice that Pennsylvanians do not want to return to the days of Gosnell and lax enforcement of abortion laws. Thank you to those of you who called your state Senator urging a “no” vote on Cortes.

A Lesson from the Nightly News

By Maria Gallagher, Legislative Director
Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation

In the space of five minutes' time, I heard the following reports on a local TV newscast:
  • A high school teacher who had been drinking alcohol to excess passed out in his classroom
  • A man broke into a day care center and seized a child
  • A bullet casing was discovered inside a school
And this was just one day's news!

What struck me about this trio of stories was the lack of respect for centers of student learning. Schools and child care centers should be considered sacred ground, since these are supposed to be places where young people are nurtured and educated. It's disconcerting when crime happens anywhere, but it is especially troubling when it occurs where children congregate. Parents leave their children in the care of these institutions with the expectation that they will be safe. When we as parents see lapses in security, we feel particularly vulnerable.

These egregious incidents point to a lack of respect in our society, especially for the most fragile among us. But it is the elites of society themselves who are teaching this disrespectful attitude. When the nation's highest court says an unborn child need not be protected...when the news media object to any restrictions on abortion whatsoever...when politicians build careers out of trampling the rights of babies, people with disabilities, and the elderly...our entire culture becomes coarser. And that gives rise to any number of social ills.

I think we have a "respect deficit" in our nation. We have a shortage of patience and tolerance for people who are in some way dependent, who need our help. It all makes life a little scarier, a little less secure.

Yet, I fully believe that we can turn things around. We can teach respect, foster respect, demand respect. But it all must begin with respect for life in the womb.

The Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, Inc., is committed to promoting the dignity and value of human life from conception to natural death and to restoring legal protection for preborn children. Through legislation, political action, education and other legal means, we proclaim the truth about abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia.

Abortions In America

INCIDENCE OF ABORTION

• National Center for Health Statistics showed that 4,317,119 babies were born in the U.S. in 2007.

• In the United States, about half of all pregnancies are unintended.

 • Of all unintended pregnancies, 4 in 10 are aborted.

• There are approximately 1.21 million abortions in America each year.
• There has been a steady decline in abortions since 1980.
• Each year, about 2% of all women aged 15-44 have an abortion.
• Of the women obtaining abortions in any given year, about 47% of them have had at least one previous abortion.
• By age 45, one third of American women will have had at least one abortion.
The U.S. has the highest abortion rate (19.4 per 1,000) of any western industrialized nation.
• 88.7% of all abortions take place by the twelfth week of pregnancy.

 WHY WOMEN GET ABORTIONS

 • Women who have never been married account for one-third of abortions in America.

PUBLIC OPINION ABOUT ABORTION
Since the election of President Barack Obama, Americans have experienced a shift in how they view abortion. In the spring of 2009, several polls showed that for the first time, the majority of Americans identify themselves as “pro-life.”
Not only that, those who identify themselves as “pro-choice” fell dramatically in the same time period that pro-life sentiment rose.

DOCTORS, MIDWIVES REVOLT OVER MANDATORY ABORTIONS

by Bob Unruh
WND Faith

A formal complaint has been submitted to the United Nations against Sweden over its practice of requiring physicians and others to perform abortions.

While there was an uproar in the United States and a successful court challenge to President Obama’s plans to require people to pay into a fund for abortions, in Sweden officials have carried the mandate much further, according to the complaint submitted by the European Center for Law and Justice.

Director Gregor Puppinck wrote to Heiner Bielefeldt, special rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, at the office of the high commission on human rights at the U.N.

The victims are represented by several named midwives, doctors and pediatricians, he explained.

While “the right to conscientious objection in relation to abortion is largely recognized in European and international human rights law,” there is no such accommodation in Sweden, he said.

Philly Alive

1) The full Senate vote on the Cortes nomination for Secretary of State will take place in the next few days. Please weigh in one last time against this nomination, by clicking on the link below. A message asking for their "NO" vote will be forwarded to your State Senator. In Cortes' previous 8 year tenure, he failed to inspect abortion centers or discipline abortion providers who violated the law. Under his watch, the Gosnell atrocities took place.

To send a message asking your Senator to oppose Cortes, use this link. You can use the message provided or change it to one of your own.

Boston is the home of one of the most recent tragedies in the US against human life, but nothing compared to one that happens everyday in this same city. Is our country’s Justice System out of balance? What about the Death Penalty?

Students of Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Boston point out the counterparts and the discrepancies in the following video. Shot on location, this powerful video is dedicated to a unique class of Patriots.
