ONE ABORTION EVERY 94 SECONDS

What do the two words – Planned Parenthood – mean to you? To the uninformed, they probably imply that a father and mother discuss their future plans for a family. They would prayerfully decide what they would like and what God would like for them. Maybe they would think that Planned Parenthood would help them with these plans. They might even think Planned Parenthood is a part of Natural Family Planning. But you and I know better. We know that the real Planned Parenthood is nothing like that at all. A better name for this organization that preys upon our young would be Ending Parenthood. Planned Parenthood works day and night to destroy the morals of young people, to undermine their parents authority, and to promote abortions for profit.
 

 A new analysis from National Right to Life finds that nearly 1 in every 9 women who go to a Planned Parenthood clinic have an abortion and that those clinics perform an abortion in the United States once every 94 seconds. The same analysis showed that even though Planned Parenthood increased their “adoption referrals to other agencies” – to 2,300, abortions at Planned Parenthood still outnumbered adoption referrals by a 145-to-1 margin. Obviously, Planned Parenthood is not into adoption or into families – they are into abortion and ending families. Dr. Randall O’Bannon researched Planned Parenthood’s reporting figures for 2011. He states, “By their own numbers, Planned Parenthood continues to show that they are deeply entrenched in the business of abortion. In 2011, Planned Parenthood clinics performed 333,964 abortions. Even as current data indicate the total number of abortions in the U.S. has been going down, Planned Parenthood keeps increasing its share of the abortion industry performing well over 25% of the annual estimated total of abortions performed in the United States.” (Emphasis added) Dr. O’Bannon’s analysis also revealed:

•  At going rates for a standard surgical abortion performed at 10 weeks ($451), the 333,964
  abortions Planned Parenthood performed represent an income of at least $150.6 million.
  Collectively, the organization showed nearly $1.2 billion in revenues with more than 45% of
  that ($542.4 million) coming in the form of “Government Health Services Grants and
  Reimbursements.”
• Birth control, breast exams/care, and cancer screenings (that Planned Parenthood touted as
  major issues during the 2012 election campaign) actually decreased while abortions reached
  their all-time record.
• Prenatal care – offered at only a handful of PPFA clinics to begin with – dropped for a
  second year in a row, a perfect illustration of how tenuous Planned Parenthood’s
  commitment to a woman’s full range of “reproductive options” truly is.

“Planned Parenthood continues to be the single-largest abortion provider in the United States. And regardless of what they say, their data and their deeds show that abortion continues to take up a very large percentage of their operations and focus,” O’Bannon concluded.

A few years ago, Bishop Eugene Gerber of the Wichita Diocese, referred to an abortion clinic as a “human slaughterhouse”. That’s what Planned Parenthood really is.

Pliny the Younger, governor of Pontus from 111 to 113, had a problem. Growing numbers of Christians were unsettling the pagan establishment. He wrote to the emperor Trajan: “I interrogated these as to whether they were Christians; those who confessed I interrogated a second and a third time, threatening them with punishment; those who persisted I ordered executed. For I had no doubt that, whatever the nature of their creed, stubbornness and inflexible obstinacy surely deserve to be punished.”  He deemed them superstitious because they were accustomed to meet on a fixed day before dawn and sing responsively a hymn to Christ as to a god.  Superstition was not a crime, as it was rife in the Empire, but these Christians refused to worship the gods of the land and would rather die than worship the Emperor himself. Trajan replied that the ‘spirit of our age” required that the governor should persecute only those who refused to cease being Christians.

Governor Andrew Cuomo recently declared on a radio program in Albany that those who refuse to go along with state legislation on such matters as abortion and the redefinition of marriage, have “NO place in the State of New York.” He did not threaten to throw Christians to wild beasts, but the tone of the governor of the Empire State was decidedly imperious. Attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville, but more probably the words of Joseph de Maistre, is the warning: “In a democracy, people get the government they deserve.” Catholics fragile in spirit who symbolically offered incense to Caesar by voting for such present leaders, were either ignorant (and ignorance, unlike stupidity, can be cured) or selfish in placing material considerations above moral standards. But they certainly have got the government they deserve.

According to tradition, when Trajan was en route to Armenia, he stopped in Antioch where the bishop Ignatius was brought before him. The emperor was perplexed that such a gentle man would not water down his faith in order to cooperate with the state. Before arriving in Rome where he was tossed to the lions, Ignatius wrote to the Christians in Ephesus: “Do not err, my brethren. Those that corrupt families shall not inherit the kingdom of God. If, then, those who do this as respects the flesh have suffered death, how much more shall this be the case with anyone who corrupts by wicked doctrine the faith of God, for which Jesus Christ was crucified! Such a one becoming defiled {in this way}, shall go away into everlasting fire and so shall every one that hearkens unto him.”

St. Ignatius was second in succession to St. Peter as bishop of Antioch. He was a student of Christ's most beloved apostle John. So what Ignatius wrote pulses with the authority Christ gave to Peter and the heart John could hear beating at the Last Supper.

THOUSANDS OF PRO-LIFE ACTIVISTS MARCH IN SAN FRANCISCO

SAN FRANCISCO (January 27, 2014) - Many thousands of pro-life demonstrators from across California have marched through downtown San Francisco in the 10th annual "Walk for Life West Coast." They chanted "Pro Life" and carried signs that read "Defend Life" and "Women deserve better than abortion."

At one point Saturday, marchers stretched across more than a mile of Market Street, the liberal city's main thoroughfare.

A small group of pro-abortion rights activists protested the march on Market Street, holding signs that read "Abortion on demand and without apology."

California, which has a Democratic governor and legislature, expanded abortion access last year with a measure that allows nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and physician assistants to perform a type of early abortion.

NYC PREGNANCY CENTERS WIN FREE SPEECH APPEAL

NEW YORK—On January 17, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals tossed out key parts of New York City’s law requiring pregnancy centers to post signs saying they do not offer abortion referrals. That provision is a violation of the centers’ free speech, the court ruled.

The three-judge panel’s unanimous ruling was a substantial, but mixed, victory for the pregnancy centers. A lower federal judge had tossed out the city law in its entirety. The 2nd Circuit reinstated a portion of the law that requires centers to disclose whether they have medical personnel on staff. The ruling paralleled a 4th Circuit ruling on a similar law in Maryland.

In striking down the city law’s sign requirement, the 2nd Circuit ruled the law “requires centers to mention controversial services that some pregnancy services centers, such as plaintiffs in this case, oppose.”The ruling continued: “A requirement that pregnancy services centers address abortion, emergency contraception, or prenatal care at the beginning of their contact with potential clients alters the centers’ political speech by mandating the manner in which the discussion of these issues begins. … The centers must be free to formulate their own address.”

Former Abortionist: “Extracting A Fetus, Piece By Piece, Was Bad For My Sleep”

In a 1994 editorial in the Los Angeles Times, an abortionist named Dr. George Flesh wrote about how he left the abortion business. Many former abortionists and clinic workers describe an “aha moment” when they first realized abortion was wrong. For Abby Johnson, for example, it was when she saw a 13-week-old unborn baby being aborted via ultrasound. For Dr. Yvonne Moore , it was when she became pregnant herself and saw her baby’s heartbeat on the ultrasound screen. Dr. Flesh also had an experience that opened his eyes to how wrong abortion is:

“… a married couple came to me and requested an abortion. Because the patient’s cervix was rigid, I was unable to dilate it and perform the procedure. I asked her to return in a week, when the cervix would be softer.

The couple returned and told me that they had changed their minds and wanted to “keep the baby.” I delivered the baby seven months later. Years later, I played with little Jeffrey in the pool at the tennis club where his parents and I were members. He was happy and beautiful. I was horrified to think that only a technical obstacle had prevented me from terminating Jeffrey’s potential life. The connection between the six-week-old human embryo and a laughing child stopped being an abstraction for me. While hugging my sons each morning, I started to think of the vacuum aspirator that I would use two hours later.”

NEW YORK TIMES SHOWS ITS BIAS

Bill Donohue comments on bias at the New York Times:

There is no newspaper in the United States that is more extreme in its defense of abortion-on-demand and homosexual rights than the New York Times. It regards the defense of partial-birth abortion to be a "moderate" position, and its reporters have openly bragged about the record number of homosexuals who write feature stories. Today's edition offers more support to the accusation that it is biased in its coverage on these issues.

There is a front-page story about a homosexual vice principal in Seattle who was asked to step down when it was learned that he was married to a man. The 1351-word story does not focus on the man's violation of a contract he voluntarily signed (Catholic employees are expected to abide by Catholic teachings); rather, it focuses on students who are rallying to his side. The story features four photos: the one on the front page is in color, and one of the three pictures on p. A16 is quite big (9"x6").

On the opposite page, p. A17, there is an average-size picture of the March for Life that was held yesterday in Washington, D.C. There is no story. Yet there could have been a great one: hundreds of thousands of marchers, overwhelmingly young, braved the bitter cold; many had traveled through a snow storm the day before to get there (the federal government shut down because of the bad conditions).

A handful of young people from Seattle who support their fired vice principal merits big coverage, but a massive pro-life march in a winter storm is all but ignored. And the motto of the New York Times is, "All the News That's Fit to Print." I guess pro-life news is not fit to print.

I am writing today with an URGENT request. There is a preborn baby in Texas who will be put to death by Monday at 5:00 PM if all of us don't act immediately. Since November 26, 2013, Baby Munoz' mother, Marlise Munoz, has been treated at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. Marlise was found unconscious by her husband and was taken to the hospital. She was put on life support and has been taken care of by the hospital for the last eight weeks. She is pregnant and her baby is still alive. Baby Munoz is just 22 weeks old and needs to stay in mom's womb for a few more weeks to have a good chance of survival. The problem is that Marlise Munoz has been declared "brain dead" by doctors and the doctors, her husband, and her parents want treatment stopped. They want Marlise and her baby to be killed. The hospital has been the good guy here and has refused to stop treatment. The family took the hospital to court and, on Friday... The judge ordered the hospital to kill both the mother and child by taking life support away from the mother! The hospital is considering whether or not to appeal the ruling. Any appeal will give Baby Munoz more time to develop and increase the chances of survival. Because of the "brain death" declaration, many people are making this into a complicated case. It is not. Your American Life League has been fighting these "Brain Death" declarations for years and, sadly, we predicted just this kind of thing, and worse, would happen. I could write volumes on why "brain death" is NOT true death and why medical personnel could not keep a truly dead person functioning for 8 weeks. But we don't have time for that. We need to save this mother and child and we need to do it immediately. We need you to call the hospital and beg them to continue fighting for the mother and child and to appeal the judge's ruling. Reflection:     

In today's Gospel Jesus preaches, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." And after calling the first apostles, he went around all of Galilee, "proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people" (Mt 4:23). Repentance is necessary for healing, but the Lord doesn't want us to remain stuck in misery over our sins. With healing comes peace and the joy of knowing we are loved and forgiven by God. The message of the Gospel of Life is one of great joy! Our call to live this Gospel is not marked with sadness and despair, but with hope, expectation and exuberant joy. "It is up to you, young followers of Christ, to show the world that faith brings happiness and a joy which is true, full and enduring...The Gospel is the "good news" that God loves us and that each of us is important to him. Show the world that this is true!" (Pope Benedict XVI, Message for the 27th World Youth Day, March 15, 2012)

Forty-One Years Later the Cruelty Rages

On the eve of the tragic anniversary of Supreme Court decriminalized slaughter—Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton—the opportunity arises to examine what is involved if we are turn the tide.

To do that honestly means that the facts should be examined objectively.

The first of these facts and certainly the most important is that, though abortion is an act that robs a human being of his life, the public does not perceive it in that light. To do so would require thoughtful reflection on the difference between good and evil.

America prefers to ignore the obvious and relegate the crime to a “choice.”

The second fact is that abortion occurs in a multitude of ways including the chemical actions of a birth control pill or other contraceptive device; the surgical action of an abortion doctor, physician assistant, or nurse-midwife; or in the reproductive technology laboratory.

Each act is a horror that should never have been protected by law. Having said that, once the damage was done, politics took over.

The third fact is that, from the political perspective, abortion became an “issue” that defined two distinctly different political groups—conservative versus liberal. Consequently, one political group chose to oppose surgical abortion in most cases while never attempting to expose the early abortions caused by birth control. From May 1973, with the introduction of the flawed Buckley Amendment, language of compromise crept into pro-life political rhetoric.

The fourth fact is that reproductive technology came into the picture in 1978 with the birth of the first in vitro fertilization baby, Louise Brown. Pro-life leaders, political and for the most part educational, were silent on the matter. Even the Catholic Church was slow to respond, waiting until 1987 to definitively expose the evils of IVF and related practices in the teaching document Donum Vitae.

The early days exposed a weakness among us, an inability to deal honestly and frankly with the many evils in our midst that contribute to what was crystallized in 1995 by Pope John Paul II as the “culture of death.”
