3 Major Developments with Planned Parenthood in Pennsylvania - Action Needed!

Pennsylvania Family Institute

  1. Contact US Senators Pat Toomey & Bob Casey
  2. Reading High School Board Makes Sudden Change, Threat of Planned Parenthood in School Continues
  3. Planned Parenthood Funding (and failing) Elections

1) Please contact U.S. Senator Pat Toomey and U.S. Senator Bob Casey - Voting to defund Planned Parenthood as soon as next week!

In May, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the American Health Care Act. One provision in the bill would defund Planned Parenthood, which currently receives about $550 million a year of taxpayer money.

Recent news reports indicate the U.S. Senate may be unwilling to defund Planned Parenthood. A Senate vote could come as early as next week.

Since the passage of the bill in the House, Planned Parenthood has put on an aggressive, well-funded media campaign targeting U.S. Senators that likely would vote to defund Planned Parenthood; including our own U.S. Senator Pat Toomey.

Senator Pat Toomey and Senator Bob Casey need to hear from you! They need to know that American taxpayer money should fund local community health centers, not subsidize a scandal-ridden, billion-dollar abortion business.

  • Contact your Senators today to voice your support for defunding Planned Parenthood!  Ask them to vote to defund Planned Parenthood.
  • Pray! Please pray that the Senate defunds Planned Parenthood.

2) Reading High School Board Makes Sudden Change, Threat of Planned Parenthood in School Continues

Our staff was on hand for the rally and board meeting in Reading, PA this week because the school district is considering allowing Planned Parenthood to operate directly in the high school.

Watch our three-minute video update below for highlights of this rally.

In a surprising move to everyone attending - including several local reporters - the board decided to remove this part of the meeting from their agenda and did not discuss Planned Parenthood at all during the evening.

It's being reported that the board intends to bring this up again in August but thus far nothing has formally been announced. The next board meeting is Wednesday, June 28th, but again, nothing yet on whether they will choose to vote on this proposal. We will certainly keep you posted once we hear more.

To the Reading, PA community - keep up the good work! Our team overheard several board members as they were heading into the meeting state that they had received hundreds of emails from folks with concerns about the proposal. With their last-minute decision to remove any discussion from the agenda in front of a room filled with people against the proposal, this may be a good sign.

You can go right now to our Citizen Action Center - direct link here and send the board members an email asking for their opposition to the proposal.

Planned Parenthood Reading is just two miles away from the high school and they perform hundreds of abortions every year. No one from Planned Parenthood that directly profits from abortions ($450 - $540 on each) should be able to influence high schoolers during the school day regarding teen pregnancy and sexual relationships.

Thank you for any help you can be in this effort. Please help spread the word. PA Family Institute will certainly keep you updated with the latest news.

3) Planned Parenthood Funding (and failing) Elections

"Jon Ossoff lost the House race in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District despite receiving nearly three-quarters of $1 million from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund." (Washington Times)

In the 2016 elections, Planned Parenthood spent over $30 million, “the most money it ever spent in an election and double what it spent in the last cycle.” This included:

  • “Planned Parenthood Votes & Action Fund’s $250,000 ad buy is a digital ad that will also run in Philadelphia” against Senator Pat Toomey (June 2016).
  • $1.3 million ad buy targeting Senator Pat Toomey (August 2016)
  • Planned Parenthood launches seven-figure ad buy for Hillary Clinton (February 2016)

Ninety-nine percent (99%) of their political spending goes to pro-abortion candidates, matching their Twitter feed riddled with political posts pushing their abortion-selling agenda.

Yet Planned Parenthood continues to receive millions in taxpayer funding. Planned Parenthood really stands alone as being the major recipient of taxpayer funding and being a major election financial contributor.

With all this spending, it sure looks like Planned Parenthood does not need taxpayer funding to subsidize their pro-abortion agenda.

**Take Action**

Here in Pennsylvania, an effort to prioritize the limited funding for family planning services is a step in the right direction. SB300 and HB1542 would invest in those offering comprehensive care for women and families and not give priority to those offering limited services and directly involved in abortions. Use our Citizen Action Center to contact your State Senator in support of SB300 & HB1542.

Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey, Supposed Pro-Life Democrat, Has a 0% Pro-Life Voting Record This Year

By Maria Gallagher
Life News

When it comes to pro-life votes, U.S. Senator Bob Casey, Jr. has entered the “Hall of Shame.”

The son of the late Pennsylvania pro-life hero, Gov. Robert Casey, Sr., has voted not once, not twice, but three times against the pro-life position in critical votes in the U.S. Senate this year, according to National Right to Life’s highly-respected pro-life voting scorecard.

His votes add up to a whopping 0 percent pro-life voting record in 2017.

This from a man who claims he is pro-life—even while he promotes Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion operation, which commits more than 320,000 abortions annually.

In fact, today (Friday), Planned Parenthood Advocates of PA tweeted a photo of a rally they were attending in the Pennsylvania state Capitol which prominently featured–guess who?– Senator Casey.

The rally claimed to be promoting health care. However no matter how often and how loudly PPFA argues otherwise, abortion is not health care.

Sen. Casey voted against legislation nullifying pro-abortion President Barack Obama’s parting gift to Planned Parenthood. In recent years, several states receiving Title X family planning grants have opted to direct those funds to county health departments, community health centers, or other types of providers, in preference to organizations engaged in objectionable activities, such as Planned Parenthood, a mega-marketer of abortion.

At the eleventh hour of his administration. Obama’s Department Heath and Human Services issued a rule designed to prevent states from redirecting Title X funds away from unsuitable organizations such as Planned Parenthood.

Thankfully, the nullification of the pro-abortion Title X rule passed Congress and was signed into law by pro-life President Donald Trump—no thanks to Bob Casey.

Casey voted again contrary to the pro-life position of National Right to Life and the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation (an NRLC affiliate) when he voted the wrong way to allow filibusters for Supreme Court nominations. And then he hit the trifecta by voting against the confirmation of the highly-qualified and esteemed Neil Gorsuch as Supreme Court justice. Again, Justice Gorsuch safely made it to the High Court, again with no help from Casey.

Pro-Lifers Stop Planned Parenthood From Opening Inside High School – For Now

By Claire Chretien
Life Site News

Massive outcry from pro-life students and activists caused a Pennsylvania school board to pull a proposal for the establishment of a Planned Parenthood-run "sexual health counseling center" inside a high school.

However, the fight isn't over. The board will likely debate the proposal at another time and vote on it in August.

The pro-abortion group AccessMatters suggested the creation of a "sexual health counseling center" inside Reading High School and run by Planned Parenthood. This center would focus "primarily [on] counseling services and condoms," according to the Reading Eagle, and "Planned Parenthood Keystone would manage daily operations."

AccessMatters runs "community-based programs" that deal with issues like "teen pregnancy prevention and education" and "LGBT health disparities." It admits that its in-school clinics funnel students to places where they can receive "sexual and reproductive health services," often a euphemism for abortion and contraception.

"Our unique position within the sexual and reproductive health care community allows us to not only have a real-time understanding of the needs of our communities, but also anticipate those needs," its website says. "This vantage point allows us to respond with programs that improve individuals’ quality of life, support them through difficult or dramatic life changes, and assist them in strengthening health promoting behaviors. Through our unique abilities to engage and empower even the hardest-to-reach populations, we are closing the gap between those with access to sexual and reproductive health and those without."

AccessMatters says its "school-based health resource centers" provide "confidential school-based places where students can receive counseling and education, condoms, and referrals to community-based providers for sexual and reproductive health services."

"If Planned Parenthood is allowed to be inside Reading High School, they are going to replicate this model in high schools – and likely middle schools – across the country. They cannot be allowed prime access to our children," said Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America.

The Reading school board was scheduled to discuss the proposal on Wednesday, but it was pulled from the meeting's agenda at the last minute without notice.

"It had apparently been pulled [at the] last minute after seeing us," Michael Israel of LeHigh Valley Pro-Life Future, who was at the meeting, told LifeSiteNews. He noted that the Reading school board requires "a one-meeting pause between discussion and voting."

Abortion Fundraiser Claims Killing Babies is “An Issue of Love, Compassion”

Texas Right to Life

The anti-Life news site Rewire recently featured an op-ed by Yamani Hernandez, an abortion fundraiser for the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF). The radical abortion group raises money to pay for the elective abortions of women who cannot afford them. Hernandez claims that NNAF receives calls from more than 100,000 people each year requesting assistance in paying for elective abortions. In her opinion piece, Hernandez attempts to show how focusing on making abortions affordable for every pregnant mother is not a callous economic argument but an expression of love and compassion.

The author shares the harrowing story of a 14-year-old girl pregnant with her second child. In a situation of desperate poverty and apparent neglect, the underaged girl allegedly paid her friends to beat her in an attempt to cause a miscarriage.

According to Hernandez, the girl could not afford an elective abortion, and she would lose her housing if her family learned of the pregnancy. To make matters worse, Hernandez says the father of the young girl’s child was an adult. Instead of addressing the crime and abuse in this tragic story, Hernandez sees this as proof that abortion is necessary.

Although Hernandez and her anti-Life group see themselves as addressing “systems of oppression,” the unfortunate reality is that they are part of a lucrative, profit-driven abortion industry that represents a system of deadly oppression. During every abortion, a child dies, a mother loses her child, and the abortion industry profits.

If the 14-year-old girl in Hernandez’s story received money from the NNAF, how would that help her? She would still be in a situation of instability and abuse in which her friends and family would rather she suffer brutal violence than receive adequate resources to welcome a child and complete her education. The abortion industry would send the girl, like so many victims before her, back to the arms of her abuser, most likely with no questions asked.

Hernandez’s anecdote highlights how NNAF and other abortion fundraising organizations fail to help abused underage girls. These are extreme and, thankfully, the minority of abortion cases. Nonetheless, many women who turn to abortion are experiencing coercion, whether from a partner, family, friends, or employers.

Obamacare Is Killing Planned Parenthood

by Emily Brown
American Life League Life Defenders

Recently it has been suggested that Planned Parenthood’s praised Obamacare is actually harming its business to the point of closure.

A few days ago we learned that Planned Parenthood affiliates will close 10 clinics in Iowa and the Rocky Mountain states during the next few months. This means that 20 Planned Parenthood clinics have closed in Iowa since 2010. Planned Parenthood is clearly suffering.

One of the facilities closing is the clinic in Casper, Wyoming—the state’s very last Planned Parenthood facility. It’s no surprise that this facility is shutting down, as it only served 480 customers per year. That’s just one to two customers per day. While this clinic is obviously closing down due to a lack of customers, some of the other closings make us wonder.

Planned Parenthood Played Huge Part in Republican Triumph in GA-6

By John Gizzi
Newsmax

Hours after the outcome became clear Tuesday night in the internationally-watched special U.S. House race in Georgia’s Sixth District, the national media was scrambling to find an explanation for the relatively easy win (53-to-47 percent) of Republican Karen Handel.

One lesson seems obvious from the suburban Atlanta district: Emphasizing a strong conservative agenda on both economic and cultural issues is crucial to rallying the Republican base. Former Georgia Secretary of State Handel did just that to defeat Democrat and former congressional staffer Jon Ossoff.

Handel, who had previously lost primary bids for governor and U.S. senator, signed the anti-tax pledge of Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform (ATR). Ossoff refused to sign.

In addition, Handel vowed to repeal Obamacare and replace it with the American Health Care Act favored by President Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan. Ossoff ran as a backer of Obamacare.

But several sources in the Peach State who spoke to Newsmax agreed that the issue of Planned Parenthood and whether it should receive tax dollars played a pivotal role in Handel's win.

Where Ossoff supported Planned Parenthood funding and received an estimated $1 million from the controversial organization, Handel campaigned as an opponent of Planned Parenthood.
She also had a particular history with the controversial organization: In 2012, she resigned in protest as a vice president of the Susan G. Komen cancer foundation after it reversed a decision to end its grants to Planned Parenthood.
"Planned Parenthood was the principal issue," former Georgia Rep. John Linder, a past chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, told Newsmax, "She handled if deftly. Ossoff said that she stopped Susan G Komen contributions to Planned Parenthood for 'lifesaving breast cancer screening.' She responded that Planned Parenthood doesn't even own a mammogram."
Linder added that "this fed into a theme that Ossoff has been lying since the beginning of the race. He didn’t have a 'top secret' clearance, as he claimed, Planned Parenthood doesn't do mammograms and he doesn't live 'just outside the district,' but quite a way out."

Court Dismisses Bogus Charges Against David Daleiden for Exposing Planned Parenthood

By Steven Ertelt
Life News

In a huge victory, a California court today dismissed almost all of the criminal charges abortion activists filed against the pro-life advocates who recorded undercover videos exposing Planned Parenthood selling the body parts from aborted babies.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra filed 15 felony charges against both David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt. Becerra is a longtime abortion advocate with financial connections to the Planned Parenthood abortion company that the two pro-life Advocates exposed in the videos for selling body parts such as fetal brains and livers.

At the time, pro-life advocates said Becerra’s 15 felony charges were bogus charges meant to belittle the expose’ campaign and to cast aspersions on Daleiden and the organization behind the videos. They said the attempt was about drawing attention away from Planned Parenthood’s sales of aborted baby parts.

The San Francisco Superior Court on Wednesday dismissed 14 of 15 criminal counts but the pair are still charged with one count of conspiracy to invade privacy. However the court dismissed the charges with leave to amend — meaning Becerra could re-file the charges with additional supposed evidence against the pair.

The court ruled that counts 1-14 were legally insufficient. The state has the opportunity to amend if it can plead a more legally sufficient and specific complaint. The California’s Attorney General filed 15 criminal counts against Merritt, with counts 1-14 for each of the alleged interviews and count 15 for an alleged conspiracy. San Francisco County Superior Court Judge Christopher Hite gave the state attorney general’s office until mid-July to file a revised complaint.

In a statement to LifeNews, pro-life attorney Mat Svaer of LibertyCounsel, representing Merritt, said, “This is a huge victory to have 14 criminal counts dismissed.”

“We will now turn our attention to dismissing the final count. Sandra Merritt did nothing wrong. The complaint by the California Attorney General is unprecedented and frankly will threaten every journalist who provides valuable information to the public. This final count will also fall,” said Staver.
Liberty Counsel argued that the criminal complaint for illegally recording supposedly “private” conversations (in restaurants, hotel lobbies and other public places) – the first ever filed against undercover journalists – was legally deficient for numerous reasons, not the least of which was the Attorney General’s decision to prosecute Merritt in secret proceedings, without identifying even the names of her accusers or purported “victims.”

Pro-Choice Reporter Becomes Pro-Life After Witnessing Parents’ Post-Abortion Grief

By Sarah Terzo
Live Action News

Rhonda and Richard White authored a pro-life book called “Confronting Abortion Distortions.” One of the authors, Rhonda White, was originally pro-choice. In the book’s preface, she explains why she changed her mind about abortion. It happened after she witnessed an abortion procedure.

At the time of her change of heart, White had just graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and was a feature writer for the Orlando Sentinel Star. She was a supporter of the National Organization for Women, which takes a strong pro-abortion stand. White had been told that abortion was good for women and helped them achieve their goals.

Before witnessing the abortion, White thought abortion was good for women:

Everything I had read and heard about legal abortion had indicated that abortion would be the solution to the problem of an unwanted pregnancy…. She would be relieved and happy that the pregnancy, like a bad dream, was ended.

She could go on with her life. This chapter, the pregnancy, would be over, ended by the abortion. She would happily lift herself off the table and pick up wherever she left off when she discovered she was pregnant.

But when she saw the reaction of an abortion patient right after her procedure, she began questioning her pro-abortion beliefs.

Even though White saw the abortion over 40 years ago, the experience still haunts her. First she describes the abortion itself:
I stood behind [the pregnant woman], facing the abortionist, as he performed the procedure. At the end, I could hear the vacuum suction and see the blood and tissue sweep through the tube. I admit the sight made me woozy, nauseated, and very sad.
White did not examine the child’s remains after the abortion. She did not know that the baby had once had a beating heart, brain waves, and developing limbs. She would learn about fetal development later, after she became pro-life. It wasn’t the plight of the baby that struck White, but the pain of the baby’s mother and father.
White described the reactions of the woman who had the abortion and her partner:
What happened was the poor young woman began to sob and cry, over and over again, “My baby, my baby, my baby…”As they wheeled her to the recovery room and to her waiting boyfriend, they both broke into uncontrolled sobs of grief.
In that moment, White realized that abortion is not the blessing for women she had thought it was. She heard the anguished cries of a mother mourning the death of her baby. She saw a mother and father who were grieving for their child. Instead of improving their lives, abortion devastated them both.
When White saw the pain of the parents of the aborted child, she realized that what she had believed about abortion was wrong. She had seen firsthand what abortion does to women and their partners.
Rhonda White never forgot hearing the post-abortive mother crying out for her baby. Many years later, the Whites would write a pro-life book and try to spread the pro-life message.

Daleiden Charges: And the Arrest Is History

Family Research Council

If abortion groups are trying to keep a low profile, they're not doing a very good job of it. While Congress debates whether taxpayers should fund the likes of Planned Parenthood, the industry has spent the last six months trying to avoid headlines. That will be impossible now, thanks to a federal judge who's threatening to send the man responsible for exposing the grisly business to jail.

At issue now is whether Daleiden's team violated the court's order by posting new footage of clinic workers talking about the grisly details of abortion (and an admission that they sometimes "[alter the procedure for financial gain"].

BuzzFeed insists the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) is in serious hot water now, having "flouted multiple injunctions and court-issued seals by posting more shocking videos of abortion providers and identifying 14 of the John/Jane Does participating in the state criminal complaint against him and his recording partner Sandra Merritt. Those names were previously under a court seal." If the court holds Daleiden in contempt for going public with the tapes, it could be "punishable by fines, jail time and disbarment for the attorneys involved."

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra is doing his best to make that pain a reality. Together with the National Abortion Federation, the state's top law enforcer is pushing for the maximum penalty against the Daleiden's team. And with Planned Parenthood's PAC on his donor rolls, it's no wonder why.

"Before becoming the current attorney general," RedState points out, "Becerra was a state representative and over years received thousands in donations from PPFA." That investment is paying off handsomely for the abortion industry, which has watched with satisfaction as the courts and AG's office work overtime to protect their pals from investigations like David's.
The pro-lifer was already in an uphill climb against federal Judge William Orrick, who's responsible for putting the videos under lock and key to begin with. And according to records, Orrick has some interesting political connections of his own.
Not only was he appointed by President Obama but as documents show, raised $200,000 for Obama's campaign. So much for impartiality! This is the same judge who -- despite an independent forensic report -- insisted, "[CMP's projects] thus far have not been pieces of journalistic integrity, but misleadingly edited videos and unfounded assertions."
That intimidation continued with Orrick's warning: "Mr. Daleiden better be well advised by his lawyers ... that he is obligated to follow the Court's orders and not try to skate around them and cause real harm to human beings and [legally] to himself."

Of course, the tragic irony is that real harm is already being done to human beings. And not by David Daleiden! If his work has proven anything, it's who the real culprits are. To the pro-life movement, David is a hero, who's put an exclamation point on taxpayers' insistence that Congress defund these groups.

Meet Autumn: Star Wars Star’s Family Wanted Abortion, Her Mom Chose Life

“It may seem hard or seem that they’re alone, but they just have to look for resources. I had no idea at first about what was available.”

By Lisa Bourne
Life Site News

The mother who was pressured to abort by the famous family of her baby’s father is going about the business of raising her child that she welcomed into the world last fall.

Maegan Chen was dating Nathan Hamill last year when she became pregnant. Hamill, some of his friends and family members – he’s the son of actor Mark Hamill and his wife Marilou – tried to coerce Chen or manipulate her into aborting.

At one point, she agreed to the abortion and was given the abortion pill, but the drugs didn’t work and her daughter, Autumn, survived. Despite many challenges, Chen is resolute in her belief that giving her child life was the right thing to do and that her daughter is a gift from God.

Chen has that same message for other mothers in her situation: You won’t regret choosing life for your child.
“It’s hard,” she said, “and you will have to sacrifice. And it may seem like a burden, but it’s going to be the best thing you’ve ever done.”
Autumn is a happy baby who is always smiling, Chen told LifeSiteNews.“She’s very affectionate,” Chen said. “I’m really very lucky. She always wants to be with me.” The seven-month-old is beginning to crawl, rocking on all fours, and she loves to play with Chen’s French bulldog, grabbing his face and pinching him.

Autumn’s bright blue eyes always have people approaching to remark on their beauty, said Chen, and the joyful baby always smiles when she sees her six-year-old brother, Ethan, reaching for him.

As gorgeous as her daughter is, Chen hopes that people will see past her physical beauty to recognize that she has the sweetest spirit and other wonderful qualities. Born on Halloween last year, Autumn is named for Chen’s favorite season.

While Chen concedes she has not been a regular church-goer, she is very much a believer in God, and in Satan, and she’s purposeful in stating that God is the only reason the abortion didn’t work.

She’s grateful to God, and His intervention in Autumn making it into the world is not lost on her.

“He knew my heart,” Chen said, “and He knew I didn’t want to have an abortion.”

Image
Autumn was baptized on Easter Sunday
Chen had her daughter baptized at a Pasadena, California, church on Easter Sunday. Autumn was sponsored at the service by a friend of Chen’s.

“I wanted her baptized,” Chen explained. “I believe with what she’s going to face (in life), I want God’s protection for her.”

Chen feels that Autumn is God’s gift, especially because she lost another child to abortion between Ethan and Autumn.

Many people around her had told her to abort Ethan, she recalled, but she didn’t and never regretted it. Regret does not come close to covering her feelings for having aborted her next child.

“It really damaged me,” Chen told LifeSiteNews. “It’s like an empty feeling,” she said, describing the desolation. “I felt whole before. Afterward, I felt empty.”

Chen explained how she has had been depressed since having the abortion. So when she was pressured to abort Autumn, it brought the devastating loss back to the forefront.
