No, The Pope Is Not Diluting The Anti-Abortion Focus Of The Church

From Father Frank Pavone, National Director
Priests for Life

I just had a wonderful trip to Rome where I was again with Pope Francis. While there, I was asked to comment on the controversy caused by his recent interview, in which he shared some thoughts about the Church’s focus on abortion. I wrote several articles explaining why we do not need to be alarmed, and am awaiting some major papers to publish them. Meanwhile, below is another version of my commentary. Enjoy and pass along!

As the Director of Priests for Life, known worldwide as a ministry within the Catholic Church that urges more preaching, teaching, and action against abortion, I was asked by many alarmed and confused people these past few days about the reported comments of the Pope that the Church should not be "obsessed" with this issue, and that there should be "balance" and "context.

Is the pope saying we should talk less about abortion? Is he saying that the emphasis the Church has placed on this issue has been a mistaken emphasis?

When I first received these inquiries via emails and text messages, I was actually in the presence of Pope Francis, in the dining room of his residence. I had spoken just hours earlier, at the invitation of the Vatican, about the Church's defense of the unborn child, and about the clear and strong position of the Church, expressed in many documents, that the right to life is our first right and the foundation and condition for all the others.

So the news came to me with more than a little irony, and I immediately began to tell worried pro-life warriors that they had no reason to think that the Pope no longer wanted the Church to focus on abortion.

Pope Francis preaches on pro-life in a very integral way. He gives strong and clear messages that derive from the very substance of the Faith and a very broad vision of the demands that Faith places upon us. The conclusions and applications for the pro-life movement are undeniable, even if he does not use the specific words “pro-life movement” and “unborn.”

This was very clear in his homily at his installation on March 19, when he spoke of the need to protect every person, especially children, from the “Herods” of our day who plot death.

And it was clear again in his Palm Sunday homily, which contained the very strong message to have confidence in the victory of life over death.

He said it this way:
“Let us look around: how many wounds are inflicted upon humanity by evil! Wars, violence, economic conflicts that hit the weakest, greed for money, power, corruption, divisions, crimes against human life and against creation!

"Jesus on the Cross feels the whole weight of the evil, and with the force of God’s love he conquers it, he defeats it with his resurrection.

"Dear friends, we can all conquer the evil that is in us and in the world: with Christ, with the force of good!"

He mentions “crimes against human life,” using the same word the Second Vatican Council used in Gaudium et Spes to describe abortion (an “unspeakable crime”). He urges us to see evil for what it is, and then never to lose confidence in the victory we have over evil, thanks to the death and Resurrection of Christ.

In his recent interview, he made it clear that the Church should put opposition to abortion "in context." This is neither new nor unwelcome. The Pope wants to see the renunciation of abortion put in the context of mercy toward the mother, and this is consistent with the pro-life movement's emphasis on "loving them both." In fact, in my personal conversations with the Pope, he particularly urged me to go forward with the work of Rachel's Vineyard, the largest ministry in the world for healing after abortion. He called it an "excellent work."

The Pope wants the teaching against abortion not to stand alone, as if it were a negotiable moral prohibition, but rather to stand in the context of our teaching about who God is. He made this clear in his June 16 homily at the worldwide "Day of the Gospel of Life" when he declared,

"The Scriptures everywhere tell us that God is the Living one, the one who bestows life and points the way to the fullness of life…The commandments are not a litany of prohibitions -- you must not do this, you must not do that, you must not do the other; on the contrary, they are a great "Yes!": a yes to God, to Love, to life."

"All too often, as we know from experience, people do not choose life, they do not accept the "Gospel of Life" but let themselves be led by ideologies and ways of thinking that block life, that do not respect life, because they are dictated by selfishness, self-interest, profit, power, and pleasure, and not by love…As a result, the Living God is replaced by fleeting human idols which offer the intoxication of a flash of freedom, but in the end bring new forms of slavery and death."

This approach radically strengthens the Church's opposition to abortion, because the Pope is saying not simply that it breaks the Fifth Commandment ("You shall not kill"), but that more fundamentally it breaks the First Commandment ("You shall not have other gods besides me") and that to disrespect life is to abandon God himself.

Nobody should worry or think that the Pope is in any way diluting the Church's strong and unchangeable stance against abortion, or contradicting all that has already been said and written, in documents like The Gospel of Life, about the urgent priority that this issue deserves. Some 50 million children are killed by abortion around the world each year. If we want to know how much we should focus on it, we only have to use human reason and ask what our response would be if 50 million adults throughout the world were killed each year by terrorism.

Long live the pro-life movement, and long live the Pope!

2. National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Babies in Waco

Waco's participation in the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Babies went very well on on Saturday September 14. Rusty Thomas of Elijah Ministries organized the event. About 40 cars participated in the "funeral" procession from the Ross Avenue PP abortuary to Rachel's Park Memorial. Many heads were turned as the procession wound its way through Waco. The ceremony there was lovely, including two moms honoring children lost to abortion. Approximately 60 people attended.

3. Abortuary closures: Midland, Bryan and could Waco be next?

Abortion facilities in Midland and Bryan closed in August. We pray the the shedding of innocent blood in Waco at the hands of Planned Parenthood will end very soon. In the meantime, we must be faithful and vigilant on abortions mornings--Tuesdays. We have been blessed with a no-show abortionist the last three Tuesdays. Let's be faithful tomorrow with prayer and witness at the abortuary 1121 Ross Avenue from 7:30 to 10 in the morning.

4. Life Chain Sunday in Waco and the World will be October 6.

This is the BIG ONE. Time is 2 to 3:30. Location is the intersection of Valley Mills Drive and Waco Drive. Just park near Pei Wei restaurant and look for the pro-life billboard truck to get your sign and join this great public communication of pro-life messages. With your participation, we can make this the best Life Chain ever.

Tell your Senators to stand strong in defunding pro-abortion Obamacare.

Dear Pro-life Friend -

Thanks to your activism, the House passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) that funds the government without funding pro-abortion Obamacare.

Now, it’s on to the Senate.

Take Action: Tell your Senators to stand strong in defunding pro-abortion Obamacare.

You see, the health insurance exchanges created by Obamacare will begin implementation on October 1st. The exchanges are subsidized with our tax dollars and will include plans that cover elective abortions. For plans that cover abortion, the regulations require an “abortion surcharge” on each enrollee’s plan. It gets worse: a “secrecy clause” conceals which plans covers on demand abortions until enrollment.

That’s why it’s critical that the Senate stands strong and defunds Obamacare before the taxpayer funding of abortion flows through the exchanges.

Click here to tell your Senators to stand strong for Life by defunding Obamacare.

As you know, your SBA List has been fighting taxpayer funding of abortion in Obamcare from the very beginning.

As long as we have your continued help and support, we will not stop until we get the job done.

For Life,

Marjorie Dannenfelser
President, Susan B. Anthony List

P.S. It’s now up to the Senate to prevent taxpayer funding of abortion by defunding Obamacare. The health insurance exchanges created by Obamacare – subsidized with our tax dollars – begin implementation on October 1st and will include plans that cover elective abortions. Click here to tell your Senators to defund pro-abortion Obamacare now.

‘This Time’: The Anti-Abortion Music Video By John Elefante

Former “Kansas” lead singer and producer John Elefante is using his newest single “This Time,” to share the story of his adopted daughter’s birth, and in the process, bring some attention to Online for Life (OFL), an educational non-profit working to rescue babies from abortion so they can live to make their mark on the world. “I can’t imagine life without my daughter, Sami, and it just breaks my heart that pregnant young women much like her birth mother, instead of choosing life for their babies, are denying them the chance to be born,” Elefante said. “If our song can in any way bring attention to this issue and encourage those who are considering abortion to choose life through options such as adoption, then we couldn’t be happier.”

5 Reasons Why Communist Activist Angela Davis Should NOT Visit (Catholic) Seattle University

By James Bascom

It would be difficult to find a speaker who contradicts the teaching of the Catholic Church on more levels than Angela Davis.  Stalin maybe?  She is a notorious feminist, Marxist, communist, socialist who engages in pro-abortion, pro-same-sex "marriage" activism.

Sign the petition asking Seattle University to cancel Angela Davis' speech.

Yet, despite Davis' dismal record, Seattle University -- a Catholic institution -- plans to host a talk, book signing and reception for her on October 17 in the Campion Ballroom.  The event is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Justice in Society.

“Most Doctors Oppose Physician-Assisted Suicide, Poll Finds”

2/3rds Oppose Physician-assisted Suicide in Poll Conducted by New England Journal of Medicine Surveying its Own Members

 By Dave Andrusko

The headline on the story is encouraging enough—“Most Doctors Oppose Physician-Assisted Suicide, Poll Finds”—but that’s only the beginning. Here’s the opening paragraph of Steve Reinberg’s story for HealthDay.

He is writing about a poll conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) of the journal’s readers, mostly health-care providers.

“Whether doctors should help patients die continues to be a hotly debated topic within the medical community, a New England Journal of Medicine poll finds. The journal questioned readers about a hypothetical near-death case and received more than 2,000 valid responses. Roughly two-thirds worldwide — including 67 percent of replies from the United States — said they disapprove of physician-assisted suicide. Most readers of the journal are doctors.”

Okay, what else?

That 2/3rds “no” vote came even though the case was really designed to get agreement: a 72-year-old man with incurable metastatic prostate cancer. I’m guessing the authors were not happy with the results, for they wrote that “online voting . . . is prone to bias and is likely not to be scientifically valid.”

‘It’s a girl!’ Joyful Words in U.S., Dangerous Words in India, China

By Priya Narapareddy
Catholic News Service

WASHINGTON (CNS) — In the United States, hearing the words “it’s a girl,” is a cause for enormous joy and celebration for most, said Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J.

“Today, the three most dangerous words in China and India are: It’s a girl,” Smith said told a congressional hearing Sept. 10.

Smith, the father of two boys and two girls, addressed the issues of sex-selective abortion, lopsided gender ratios, and malnutrition among young females in India during a hearing of the House Subcommittee on Africa, Global Heath, Global Human Rights and International Organizations.

Smith, subcommittee chairman, said tens of millions of women are missing in India as a result of sex-selective abortion and female infanticide. Smith said in parts of India, 126 boys are born for every 100 girls.

“Women have been systematically exterminated through sex-selection abortion,” Smith said. “It’s a deliberate and premeditated assault on women.”
