New Trump Rule Allowing Small Businesses to Buy Healthcare Across State Lines is a Pro-Life Victory. Here’s Why

A new move by President Donald Trump to allow small businesses to band together and purchase health care across state lines will provide Americans with additional pro-life Healthcare options.

One of the biggest problems with Obamacare from the pro-life perspective is that many of the healthcare plans on the exchange fund abortions. In fact in some states there are no pro-life options for people to purchase health insurance as all of the healthcare plans on the exchange pay for abortions.

Not only is Obamacare proving unaffordable to millions of Americans—it is proving unconscionable for pro-life Americans who don’t want to pay for health care plans that cover abortion on demand or lack transparency about such coverage. By allowing business owners and small businesses to band together to purchase health insurance across state lines, they can purchase pro-life plans that do not pay for abortions.

Here’s more on what’s happening:

Small businesses and sole proprietors will be able to band together under a new federal rule to create employee health plans that would expand coverage options for 11 million uninsured Americans, senior Trump administration officials said.

The Labor Department rule allowing “association health plans,” placed Thursday in the Federal Register, builds on an executive order by President Donald Trump from October.

One senior Trump administration official said during a background briefing Wednesday that the association health plans will “level the playing field” between small businesses and large corporations and provide “more health care for more people at a lower cost.”

Currently, 8 million Americans employed by small businesses and another 3 million sole proprietors, who do business without employees, don’t have access to a group health insurance plan.

Entry on the Federal Register opens a 60-day public comment period, and the rule could be implemented as early as summer, officials said.

“The main objective of this effort is to expand choices for people who do not yet have insurance and [create] more options for employers and employees to take advantage of,” Robert Moffit, a senior fellow in health policy studies at The Heritage Foundation and a former assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services, told The Daily Signal.

Those options include allowing businesses to find pro-life health care options. As LifeNews has reported, a total of 25 states have opted out of covering elective abortion on the Obamacare exchange. Elective abortion refers to abortion on demand and for any reason. The 25 remaining states (and the District of Columbia) permit elective abortion coverage in Obamacare plans.

From big cases before the Supreme Court centering on free speech and religious liberty claims of a Christian baker to the ongoing investigations into transactions between abortion providers and biotech firms over fetal body parts harvested during abortion procedures, 2018 is already shaping up to be a significant year for religiously observant Americans and the unborn.

Here are five legal matters carrying significant implications that are expected to develop even more this year.

In what is considered a landmark religious liberty case before the High Court this year, in December the Court's nine justices heard arguments in the case of Colorado baker Jack Phillips whom the Colorado Civil Rights Commission sued for declining to make a custom wedding cake for a same-sex couple in 2012.

Phillips maintains that his rights were violated to conduct his business according to the dictates of his faith and that to be forced to lend his creative abilities to an event with which he disagrees is state-coerced expression, also known as compelled speech. This, his lawyers from Alliance Defending Freedom say, violates his free speech and religious freedom rights guaranteed under the First Amendment.

As it has in years past when it comes to touchy cases — such as Hobby Lobby v. Burwell in 2014 — the Court is likely to hand down this decision on the last day of the session in late June.

The current Supreme Court bench is comprised of four conservatives, four liberals, and Anthony Kennedy, long regarded as the "swing vote" on controversial cases. Reports indicated that Kennedy appeared to favor Phillips' position during oral arguments, suggesting during questioning that the state showed disrespect for Phillips' faith and that true tolerance is a two-way street.

US Ambassador for Religious Freedom Nomination of Sam Brownback Nomination Stalled; Will He Be Renominated?

President Donald Trump nominated Kansas Governor Sam Brownback in July to be the U.S. ambassador for Religious Freedom, a move that delighted religious freedom activists and social conservatives.

His appointment, however, has been delayed and has not yet been installed because Senate Democrats have blocked a confirmation vote due to concerns about Brownback's rescinding of a state executive pertaining to discrimination and LGBT government employees.

Because his nomination never got to the floor for a vote, Trump will have to either resubmit it in the new year or nominate someone else and it is at present unknown what will happen. CBN reported that unless Brownback is reappointed and confirmed before Jan. 9 the Kansas governor will have to give the State address to the Kansas state legislature despite having delivered a farewell address last month in anticipation of being confirmed to his ambassadorship. Congress returns to work on Jan. 3.

The particular ambassadorship for which Brownback was nominated is a critical post within the Department of State that focuses mainly on promoting religious freedom around the world, and calling out oppressive governments and non-state entities that oppress and persecute people on the basis of their faith.

Trump is considered to be one of the more friendly Republican presidents regarding LGBT issues. An early version of a federal executive order last year outlining religious liberty protections was reportedly scuttled because of the influence of Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner, a White House adviser, due to their concerns over LGBT rights. Trump ultimately signed a revised religious liberty executive order that was met with mixed reception on May 4.

Last month, the Trump administration renominated Chai Feldblum, a lesbian activist who joined the agency in 2010 under President Obama, to her post at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The move shocked and displeased social conservatives who have consistently supported the president.

Department of Justice Investigates Planned Parenthood

In December, the Justice Department opened an investigation into the largest abortion provider in the United States, Planned Parenthood, as a result of findings from a Congressional investigation into its financial dealings with biotech firms over fetal body parts procured during abortion procedures.

Despite undercover videos from a 2015 investigation by the Center for Medical Progress suggesting otherwise, Planned Parenthood insisted that it followed the law and made no money from fetal tissue donated during abortions and that any financial reimbursements it received were for transport expenses and handling costs.

Pro-life advocacy groups have long contended that the abortion giant, which receives hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants each year, be defunded. The closest Congress ever came to doing so was as part of a provision in the attempted repeal of Obamacare last summer, an effort which ultimately failed due to the Senate's failure to secure sufficient Republican votes.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley said in December 2016 that enough evidence was discovered showing how abortion providers had transferred the fetal body parts from aborted fetuses for research by charging amounts higher than they actually cost, according to Fox News.

"The report documents the failure of the Department of Justice, across multiple administrations, to enforce the law that bans the buying and selling of human fetal tissue," Grassley wrote in a letter, arguing the Justice Department and FBI should investigate.

"It also documents substantial evidence suggesting that the specific entities involved in the recent controversy, and/or individuals employed by those entities, may have violated that law."

David Daleiden Continues With Lawsuit Against Him in California; Biotech Tech Companies Settling Out of Court

Developments continue to emerge regarding the man behind the 2015 exposé of fetal body parts transactions between Planned Parenthood and biotech companies.

Although the federal government is now investigating the abortion giant and the biotech firms in question, David Daleiden is facing charges at the state level. The attorney general of California has filed a lawsuit against him and his colleague, Sandra Merritt, alleging criminal wrongdoing. Yet the judge on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals who is presiding over the case, Judge William Orrick III, has extrajudicial connections to the abortion group and Daleiden's attorneys recently filed a motion to disqualify him, arguing that he cannot be trusted to hear the case impartially.

Whether Judge Orrick will be removed from the case remains to be seen but the momentum does appear to be shifting away from Planned Parenthood and the biotechnology companies that did business with them in procuring fetal body parts for research purposes.

In a Dec. 14 editorial in The Hill, Daleiden recounted how an Orange County district attorney recently settled with two Southern California sister companies, DaVinci Biosciences and DV Biologics, in which they were ordered to close down operations, banned from ever doing business in the state, and forced to admit liability for violating state and federal laws.

"For over two years, Planned Parenthood has breathlessly asserted to anyone who would listen that their programs to allegedly sell aborted fetal organs and tissues were completely above reproach, arguing that they only receive legal reimbursements and follow all patient consent rules," he wrote.

"But the guilty plea by the DaVinci companies, which worked with a major Planned Parenthood abortion center in southern California, blows Planned Parenthood's dubious assertions of innocence completely out of the water."

Little Sisters of the Poor Face Court Battles in States Despite Favor in Federal Government

The Denver-based Roman Catholic nuns called the Little Sisters of the Poor that the Obama administration sued over their moral objections to offering contraception as part of their insurance plans as was required through Obamacare have had some recent victories at the federal level. But they continue to face challenges in Democratic-leaning states.

In early October, the Trump administration issued a rule broadening the religious exemption for them and other groups but a Pennsylvania judge blocked it, arguing that the rule would do "serious and irreparable harm" to the state were it to be left in place. Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro sued the nuns, attempting to remove the exemption. Such has also been the approach and posture of Attorney General Xavier Becerra in the state of California, who took the Sisters to court on Dec. 12.

Becket, the religious liberty firm that represent the sisters, have said that the attorneys general are trying to score political points.

"These men may think their campaign donors want them to sue nuns, but our guess is most taxpayers disagree," said Mark Rienzi, Becket's senior counsel, the Kaplan Herald reported Sunday.

"No one needs nuns in order to get contraceptives, and no one needs these guys reigniting the last administration's divisive and unnecessary culture war."

Unanimous 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals Strikes Down Baltimore Law Targeting Pregnancy Care Centers

After seven years of litigation, covered extensively by NRL News Today, an unanimous federal court today affirmed a 2016 ruling by U.S. District Judge Marvin J. Garbis that a Baltimore ordinance targeting pregnancy care center violates the First Amendment—precisely the position taken by opponents of the ordinance.

“An ordinance passed in 2009 required pregnancy centers that oppose abortion to post a disclaimer in their waiting rooms that they don’t provide or refer people to abortion or birth control services,” according to Robert King.

In an opinion written by Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III, and joined by Judges Allyson Duncan and G. Steven Agee, the panel ruled that the ordinance compelled a “politically and religiously motivated group [the Greater Baltimore Center for Pregnancy Concerns] to convey a message fundamentally at odds with its core belief and mission.”

The ordinance, “forces the center to utter in its own waiting room words at odds with its foundational beliefs and with the principles of those who have given their working lives to it,” he wrote. “Without proving the inefficacy of less restrictive alternatives, providing concrete evidence of deception, or more precisely targeting its regulation, the city cannot prevail.”

Indeed, in a stinging rebuke to the city of Baltimore, the decision directly challenged the city’s contention that the Greater Baltimore Center for Pregnancy Concerns, a nonprofit Christian organization, misled clients—had been “deceptive.”

“After seven years of litigation and a 1,295-page record before us, the city does not identify a single example of a woman who entered the Greater Baltimore Center’s waiting room under the misimpression that she could obtain and abortion there,” the court wrote.

The battle over the relentless pro-abortion campaign to compel pro-lifers organizations to promote abortion could be compelling to a head this year. The Supreme Court has announced it will hear National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) v. Becerra, the pro-life challenge to the so-called “Reproductive FACT Act.”

The law was pushed through on a strictly party-line vote from California Democrats and signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown. As Jay Hobbs wrote, “While it has only been enforced in one jurisdiction—the City of Los Angeles—the law has since served as a template for a 2017 mandate in Hawaii, which would likely be affected by the Supreme Court’s forthcoming decision.”

Trump's Top 8 Pro-Life Victories Listed as Operation Rescue Names Him 'Pro-Life Person of the Year'

Pro-life activist group Operation Rescue announced last week that U.S. President Donald Trump has won its 2017 Pro-Life Person of the Year Malachi Award for his work in "protecting the pre-born."

"Operation Rescue is grateful Pres. Trump for having the courage to keep promises made during the campaign that provide greater protections for the pre-born and deny Federal funds from those who commit abortions," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman in the press release.

"He has proven to be the most pro-life president we have had in modern history and has backed up his pro-life rhetoric with action like no other before him."

The group listed eight of his main accomplishments since taking office, starting with his appointment of conservative, pro-life Justice Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"He has effectively denied public money to those who commit and promote abortions around the world," Operation Rescue said of Trump's second accomplishment.

"The Trump Administration Department of Justice has launched a formal investigation into Planned Parenthood's illegal baby parts trafficking scheme," it continued.

Another victory for pro-lifers was identified in Trump's support for pro-life legislation, such as the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which is aiming to ban late-term abortions nationwide.

For the 5th accomplishment, the group listed Trump's removal of a former President Barack Obama-era mandate that forced states to continue funding Planned Parenthood despite their wishes.

Next, the activists said that Trump has "worked to fill his administration with pro-life people and put them in places where they can do the most good."

"Trump's administration has taken active steps within the Health and Human Services and other agencies to establish pro-life policies that protect the pre-born," noted the 7th item on the list.

Finally, Operation Rescue positioned that Trump has fought to provide protections for people with religious and moral objections to paying for abortifacient drugs through Obamacare.

"We are proud of President Trump and his bold willingness to advance the cause of life. There are more battles ahead, but under the Trump administration, we can now finally see progress within our government toward restoring the sanctity of life and the protections of personhood to the pre-born," Newman stated.

Other pro-life groups, such as the Washington-based Susan B. Anthony List, have also said that Trump has been fulfilling promises in this area.

Pro-Abortion Student Defends Infanticide. Killing a 2-Year-Old Baby is Okay Because “It Can’t Communicate”

A pro-abortion student has been filmed on video defending infanticide, saying there is nothing wrong with killing a two-year-old baby. The student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville bragged about his support for infanticide up to two years of age.

The video, provided to LifeNews by Students for Life of America, shows a pro-abortion student defending his position in favor of ending the lives of unborn children.

During the video, the student also defends infanticide and says that there’s nothing wrong with killing newborn babies because they are not capable of taking care of themselves or holding an intellectual conversation. The twisted logic claims that because babies are not on the same level as someone old enough to feed and clothe themselves and to carry on a conversation that apparently their life is somehow less valuable.

That is the same contorted and twisted logic that abortion advocates use to defend abortion. Supposedly because unborn babies are something less than capable adult human beings their lives have no value. It is the same kind of logic that also persecutes the elderly and disabled and says that their lives have less value because they are supposedly less capable.

“The fact of the matter is without communication, we have no way of knowing of you are sentient or not,” the unidentified student says in the video clip. “It’s no different than this tree. It’s alive, but is it sentient? I don’t know. I cannot communicate with it.”

Then he defends killing infants.

“Can the two year old talk to me? In some instances I’m fairly certain that is,” the student said. “But generally speaking the child still has the inability to communicate. And until we determine that as such at what point does sentience become an issue. We can’t really debate whether or not that is the situation or not.”

Parents Refuse to Abort ‘Miracle’ Child, Now He’s a Healthy Six-Year-Old

TORONTO, CANADA– Medical experts insisted abortion was the only option for horribly deformed Kaito Kryvenchuk.

A 17-week ultrasound revealed he had a massive tumor larger than his head, attached to his neck and jaw up to his ear. He literally looked like he had two heads.

Not only was the benign tumor life-threatening because of its size, but accompanying disabilities were unpredictable. The mass was so large that the boy would not be able to breathe. Only one in 50,000 babies with similar tumors even survive.

The obstetrician said Canadian hospitals simply do not do such births. Doctors told Kaito’s parents Charles and Tamami it was best and most compassionate to abort him and just try again for a viable child.

“Your emotions are running through the roof,” Charles later shared. “What do you say when you’re told your baby has to be terminated?”

But as the Toronto Star gleefully reports, the couple decided to give their son a chance. First, Charles and his wife said “no” to abortion.

“We decided we couldn’t live with ourselves terminating the life we created, not knowing whether we terminated a baby that would have been fine,” Charles said as Tamami agreed.

Secondly, they named their tiny boy, so as to personalize “some(one) to fight for.” The couple chose the name “Kaito,” Japanese for “strong warrior.”

Charles began researching cervical teratoma, and found out from Boston Children’s Hospital that birth was possible if surgeons used a rare, special procedure called EXIT (ex utero intrapartum treatment). The procedure consists of a Caesarean section but delaying cutting the umbilical cord, so the baby has oxygen while the doctor opens an alternative airway.

Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital staff agreed to try the EXIT birth surgery. Over a dozen specialists from Sick Kids Hospital across from Mt. Sinai on University Avenue teamed up to remove Kaito’s tumor.

On August 5, 2011, Mount Sinai successfully delivered Kaito. Mount Sinai’s head of fetal medicine, Dr. Greg Ryan, quickly established an alternate airway through Kaito’s trachea. The whole delicate procedure took only about seven minutes, from Kaito’s delivery to his being able to breathe and cutting his umbilical cord.

Just days later, doctors at Sick Kids operated to remove his massive tumor.

The surgery, led by Dr. Paolo Campisi, took six hours under immense pressure to save the seven-and-a-half pound boy. The tumor was a pound and a half, twenty percent of Kaito’s entire body weight.

“The main risk was blood loss and injury to nerves,’’ Dr. Campisi explained.

The specialists tied off every single one of Kaito’s tiny veins, “one by one,” as ear, nose and throat surgeons, plastic surgeons, a nerve specialist, anesthetists and nurses sought to extradite the growth. Campisi added that the operation “was quite painstaking.” Plastic surgeons also reconstructed Kaito’s ear lobe.

New Year's resolutions often involve promises to somehow lose 50 pounds by next week – or develop some other healthy habit – but most rarely make it beyond February before they're all but forgotten.
