President Donald Trump’s Defunding International Planned Parenthood Has Hurt the Global Abortion Agenda

“It’s not irrational, the behavior that the Mexico City Policy has caused,” concluded Gillespie, “and I would say, yeah, unfortunately, it does work.”

By Rebecca Oas, Ph.D.
Life News

Some of President Donald J. Trump’s harshest critics admit that his reinstatement and expansion of the pro-life Mexico City Policy has been highly effective in advancing the United States’ moral influence to curb the international abortion lobby.

The policy has been implemented by Republican presidents since Ronald Reagan, blocking U.S. funding for foreign organizations that provide or advocate for abortions. Direct U.S. funding for overseas abortions is already prohibited in law by the Helms Amendment in 1973.

Despite the deeply entrenched political divide around abortion, the policy’s critics hope to sway pro-life stakeholders by arguing that the policy causes harm through its unintended consequences. They claim that it results in the denial of basic health services to women whose providers choose not to comply with the policy, lose U.S. funding, and therefore reduce their offerings or close their doors altogether.

Marie Stopes International and the International Planned Parenthood Federation, two of the largest international family planning providers—who also perform abortions—have notably refused to accept the terms of the reinstated policy. Instead, they have chosen to forego U.S. funding, even if it means cutting back their delivery of less controversial services or closing clinics entirely.

Because the Mexico City Policy involves U.S. aid work in foreign countries, the politics of abortion on the ground vary between locations, depending on local law, culture, and other donor organizations and countries. Nevertheless, there is clear evidence of the policy’s impact, often published by its critics.

A 2010 report on the policy’s effects in Ethiopia cited erosion of trust in the legitimacy of abortion providers and quoted people as asking, “[I]f abortion is a positive development for Ethiopian women’s health, then why does the U.S. government not support it?”

Several speakers at a Gates Institute-sponsored seminar earlier this year spoke against the policy. Elisha Dunn-Georgiou of Population Action International pointed out that while the policy does not reduce U.S. funding for health or family planning, it takes it away from those she described as “the most competent providers of ‘sexual and reproductive health and rights’,” a term understood in international circles as including not only abortion, but also sexual orientation, gender identity, and a variety of other controversial elements.

When asked directly about the efficacy of the policy on abortion, Duff Gillespie, current Gates fellow and former head of USAID’s population and reproductive health division, said the policy “has set back, in a very dramatic way, even a discussion about the consequences of unsafe abortion.”

Earlier, Gillespie acknowledged that it was impossible to frame such a discussion as anything other than advocacy for abortion. Dunn-Georgiou agreed that the policy had a “huge, huge chilling effect” on pro-abortion activism in countries receiving U.S. aid.

Silent No More: God's Grace Poured Out Onto My Life

Hello, my name is Monica Jordan. When I take a look back at my life, I can see the rippling effects of my every action. Maybe some of you remember my story. I have carried my scarlet letter for all to see. I have shared with you my soul, my regret. I have shared with you the things that are permanently etched in my head. The oven mittens for stirrups, the poster on the ceiling as a focal point, the sound of the machine.

Feeling alone in the decision, in the pain, and the loss. The loss of life and the loss of my own soul. I have shared with you the darkness that took over and almost conquered my life. My daughter Rebecca would have been 20, my son Esai would be 19, and my daughter Elizabeth would be 17 years old right now.

My every action has caused a shock wave that has greatly impacted my family, living children, and friends. My daughter Alina, and son Devin at 14 and 11 years old respectively, have experienced the loss of siblings. They long for what could have been, and wish I would have been strong enough to have made the choice to choose life.

My mother shared with me the greatest impact of abortion was dealing with the insurmountable sorrow of losing her grandbabies, however it was nothing to the destruction that her daughter’s life took. My friend who went with me to the abortion clinic for my first abortion shared with me that we were so young, she didn’t know what to think.

She thought she was trying to be a good friend by helping me. But she sees now that it really effected my life. The trauma is overwhelming, and can come and go when you least expect it. My family, friends, and children have stood by me, through the minefields of the abortion trauma. God’s light, unfailing love, and grace, has poured out onto my life.

I am thankful that I am not alone in the healing process. For me, God guides my path, with each healing God is my healer, and restorer. I pray that within this story, you find some peace, and seek help to begin your own healing journey. I will be praying for all of us, who have been affected by abortion. God bless you all, and this is why I am Silent No MORE!

Canadian Court Tells Doctors They Must Refer For Euthanasia

The case is sure to be appealed, but if the doctors championing conscientious objection fail, the consequences will be dire.

By Michael Cook
National Right to Life

For years bioethicists of a utilitarian cast have argued that conscientious objection has no place in medicine. Now Canadian courts are beginning to put their stamp of approval on the extinction of doctors’ right to refuse to kill their patients.

The Superior Court of Justice Division Court of Ontario ruled this week that if doctors are unwilling to perform legal actions, they should find another job.

A group of five doctors and three professional organizations were contesting a policy issued by Ontario’s medical regulator, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), arguing it infringed their right to freedom of religion and conscience under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

However, Justice Herman J. Wilton-Siegel wrote on behalf of a three-member panel:
"the applicants do not have a common law right or a property right to practise medicine, much less a constitutionally protected right."
“Those who enjoy the benefits of a licence to practice a regulated profession must expect to be subject to regulatory requirements that focus on the public interest, rather than the interests of the professionals themselves.”
At issue is the policy of “effective referral.” A doctor who objects to participating in euthanasia cannot be forced to do it. But he is expected to pass the patient to another doctor who will.

The CPSO argues that effective referral is necessary
“to protect the public, prevent harm to patients and facilitate access to care for patients in our multicultural, multifaith society, by guiding all physicians on how to uphold their professional and ethical obligations of non-abandonment and of patient-centered care within the context of Ontario’s public health-care system.”
Without the policy of effective referral, equitable access would be “compromised or sacrificed, in a variety of circumstances, more often than not involving vulnerable members of our society at the time of requesting services,” Justice Herman Wilton-Siegel wrote. People in remote communities might request euthanasia. If their doctor refused, they might suffer needlessly and taxpayers would have to foot the bill to subsidize the refusnik’s conscience.

It is remarkable how closely Justice Wilton-Siegel’s text hews to the arguments of bioethicists who have been chipping away at the right to conscientious objection for years.

Ex-Planned Parenthood Workers: Some Women Were Bribed to Abort

By Sarah Terzo
Live Action News

In a recent webcast by the pro-life group And Then There Were None, three former Planned Parenthood workers spoke about the Justice Fund, a type of financial aid offered to women who want abortions but can’t come up with the money to pay for them. In practice, this fund gives women financial incentive to choose abortions.

women, Planned Parenthood, abortion quotasSue Thayer, former Planned Parenthood manager
In the webcast, former Planned Parenthood worker Sue Thayer (pictured) gave some background on the Justice Fund, explaining how workers at her facility suggested various ways for women to pay for their abortions. Workers only mentioned the Justice Fund if a woman had exhausted all her other options:

The Justice Fund in Iowa was a special account set up for when women came in and couldn’t quite come up with the money for their abortion. Staff that did the intakes were trained to [say] you know, can you take out another credit card? Do you have a partner [or] parent, anyone who can help you pay for this? If they came up empty then they would turn to the Justice Fund.

Abortion workers would first try to convince women to add to their credit card debt or borrow the money. But if there was no other way a woman could pay, workers used the fund to ensure that the women went through with their abortions.

Not surprisingly, only a small fraction of Justice Fund money was put up by Planned Parenthood itself. There were some cuts made to workers’ salaries to add money to the fund. But the vast majority came from donations. Abby Johnson explains (emphasis added):

And this pot of money, Justice Fund money, it’s about $23 million a year. And it is given by Warren Buffett through his foundation… as basically a population control measure because Warren Buffett is very much a population control type of guy.… He gives it to the National Abortion Federation and then NAF distributes it, to all the affiliated Justice Fund providers. To all Planned Parenthood clinics.
All Planned Parenthood clinics are Justice Fund providers. And any other clinic that is part of NAF, part of the National Abortion Federation. It’s just an association that they pay dues to. So $23 million a year going into this pot of money.
So all Planned Parenthood facilities as well as some other abortion facilities are eligible to use the Justice Fund.

The Justice Fund is only for abortions. As former Planned Parenthood worker Annette Lancaster notes:

The Justice Fund only paid for abortions. It didn’t pay for any other services that Planned Parenthood claimed that they offer women. It didn’t pay for breast cancer screening, it didn’t pay for any family planning services. It was only for abortions.

There is no fund at Planned Parenthood that helps women pay for cancer screenings, pap smears, or breast exams, which are actual health services women need. Instead, the fund exists just to finance abortions. That Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry offers financial aid to women who want abortions, but not to women who can’t afford cancer screenings or even contraception, shows where their priorities lie.

The women were given gift cards. And the gift cards paid not just for the abortion procedure itself, but for transportation, hotel bills, etc. Lancaster explains:
We would give them Visa gift cards. Like Visa, the check card. They’d be $25, $50, $75 – up to $100. Especially for women that were there for two day procedures. We would pay for their hotel rooms. We would pay for transportation for them to get back and forth from the hotel to the clinic and anything that they needed that they didn’t have funds for that we needed to pay for them to be able to stay and have that procedure done.

Program Alert: Pope Paul VI vs Margaret Sanger

As the Catholic Church commemorates the 50th of  Anniversary of Humanae Vitae, EWTN will broadcast a special that will pit one of the churches staunch pro life popes against a rebellious, notorious feminist who wanted to kill a child as an act of mercy and exterminate the "negro population" because they are human weeds. You can see this debate on EWTN in two parts.

From EWTN:

Dr. Benjamin Wiker, creator and narrator of “Saints vs. Scoundrels,” pits Sanger against Blessed Pope Paul VI, the author of Humanae Vitae. His controversial encyclical outlined the dangers of birth control and urged Catholics to embrace the Church’s beautiful teaching on life and marriage at a time when birth control was universally praised as a “cure” for “unwanted pregnancy.”

Through a fictional interaction based on historic fact, Dr. Wiker gets to the heart of Sanger’s evil objectives. Using Sanger’s own words, Paul VI reveals how Planned Parenthood wishes to eliminate the poor and sick, minorities, and those whom Sanger calls, “idiots, morons, and high-grade imbeciles.”

What differentiates the saint and the scoundrel is clear: Truth and Love. While Sanger considered birth control and eugenics solutions for racial betterment and a source of women’s liberation from the snares of childrearing, Blessed Paul VI recognized the dangers. He warned that birth control “could open wide the way for marital infidelity and a general lowering of moral standards… and [could not only lead to a man’s] disregarding [a woman’s] physical and emotional equilibrium, [but could also] reduce her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires, no longer considering her as his partner whom he should surround with care and affection (Humanae Vitae, paragraph 17)."

All of the previous match-ups of “Saints vs. Scoundrels” are entertaining and informative in their own right, but “Saints vs. Scoundrels: Blessed Paul VI vs. Margaret Sanger” is one of the most important episodes because of the pervasiveness of Sangers’ destructive ideology in today’s culture.

Be sure to tune in to EWTN for Part 1, which airs 5:30 p.m. ET, Sunday, Feb. 4 with encores at 3:30 a.m. ET, Thursday, Feb. 8 and 6:30 a.m. ET, Saturday, Feb. 10. Part 2 airs the following week at the same times. For the many ways you can watch EWTN, please go to ewtn.com/everywhere.

Many American Women Have Felt Pressured into Abortions, Study Finds

Jonathan Abbamonte
Population Research Institute

A significant number of American women who have had an abortion have felt subtle, or even substantial, unwanted pressure to abort, a recent study has found.

The study, published recently in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, found that nearly three-quarters (73.8%) of women with a history of abortion surveyed admitted that they experienced at least subtle forms of pressure to terminate their pregnancies.

More than half of the women reported that the perceived pressure was great enough to significantly influence their decision to abort. Of the 987 women surveyed, more than half (58.3%) indicated that they decided to abort in order to make others happy. Nearly 30% of survey respondents admitted that they were afraid that they would lose their partner if they failed to terminate their pregnancy.

Further underlining the fact that choosing abortion is contrary to women’s natural instincts, the study also found that two-thirds of the women (66%) knew in their hearts that abortion was wrong. Many women (67.5%) said that the decision to terminate their pregnancies was one of the hardest decisions of their lives.

“These findings are alarming,” says Population Research Institute President Steven Mosher. “They suggest that a substantial number of women in America today who supposedly ‘choose’ abortion are actually being pressured into it by their husbands, boyfriends, or family members.”

New Jersey Senate Forces Taxpayers to Give $7.5 Million to Planned Parenthood Abortion Biz

By Micaiah Bilger
Life News

New Jersey residents could be forced to give their hard-earned tax dollars to the nation’s largest abortion chain for the first time in eight years.

The state Senate passed legislation Thursday to send $7.5 million to Planned Parenthood and other groups that do abortions in the state, NorthJersey.com reports. The legislation now moves to the state Assembly. Pro-abortion Gov. Phil Murphy promised to sign it.

The bill would reverse decisions by former Gov. Chris Christie to block $7.5 million tax dollars to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion business. Christie, who is pro-life, vetoed Planned Parenthood funding numerous times and redirected the family planning funds to federally qualified community health centers.
“We’re going to begin to reverse the tide that we have seen during the previous eight years and work to improve access to family planning services for women,” said Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, a pro-abortion Democrat, on Thursday.
Christine Sadovy, a lobbyist for Planned Parenthood in New Jersey, praised the move. She said the abortion chain had to shut down six facilities in the past eight years because of the funding cuts.

She and pro-abortion lawmakers claimed women lost access to vital health care during those eight years – a claim refuted by numerous sources.

A state Department of Health spokeswoman said non-abortion family planning clinics, hospitals and other medical facilities received tens of millions of dollars during the past eight years to offer cancer screenings, prevention programs, STD testing and more to low-income women.

Marie Tasy, executive director of New Jersey Right to Life, said federally qualified health centers in the state received funding to serve low-income women and provide more comprehensive health care than Planned Parenthood.
“It is both irresponsible and unconscionable that Senate and Assembly leaders and Governor Murphy are moving full steam ahead to force New Jersey taxpayers to fund Planned Parenthood, an organization that is currently under investigation by the FBI for the illegal sale of baby body parts,” Tasy told the local news.
In December, the U.S. Department of Justice said it is investigating whether the abortion chain illegally sold aborted baby body parts.

Tasy said pro-abortion legislators are pandering to their “extreme base” by pushing through this legislation. She said her organization delivered petitions signed by hundreds of state residents to the Senate in opposition to the bill.
