Will the New U.S. Congress Protect Life Once Harry Reid’s “Roach Motel” Goes Out of Business?

Prospects for Pro-life Legislation Brighten, But Obama Stands in the Way

by Steven W. Mosher
Population Research Institute

For the last four years, the U.S. Senate has been the place where pro-life legislation went to die. Of more than a dozen pieces of pro-life legislation passed by the U.S. House of Representatives during the last two Congresses, not a single one was taken up by the Senate. Violating the Senate’s century-long tradition of deliberation and debate, outgoing Majority Leader Harry Reid (D), simply refused to bring them to the floor for a vote. Former Governor Mike Huckabee described Reid’s obstruction in these colorful words: “Harry Reid has created the roach motel of legislation. The bills come in, but they never come out.”

Among the pro-life bills that the pro-abortion Reid killed in this way were:

The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act: bans nearly all abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy—the point at which it is generally acknowledged that the unborn child can feel pain—and would save at least 18,000 lives a year. It would be an important step towards banning all abortions.

The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act: prohibits the federal government, in the words of Cardinal Sean O’Malley, from “us its funding power to support and promote elective abortion, and … forc taxpayers to subsidize this violence.” The bill would also force Obamacare plans that include a secret elective abortion surcharge to reveal this to consumers.

The Health Care Conscience Rights Act: protects the First Amendment rights of Americans by exempting them from the Obama Administration’s Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate. It also offers conscience protection for individuals and health care entities that refuse to provide, pay for, or refer patients to abortion providers because of their deeply-held, reasoned beliefs.

The Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act: bans abortions for reasons of sex- and race-selection. This bill would save the lives of several thousand baby girls, who are currently being aborted for no other reason than that they are girls.

The Fiscal Year 2015 Appropriations Bill: The House version cuts funding to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which is a strong supporter of China’s coercive population control program, reinstitutes the Mexico City Policy (MCP), denying federal funding to foreign nongovernmental organizations that perform or promote abortion as a method of family planning, and cuts funding for population control programs down to $461 million.

These and other sensible pieces of pro-life legislation that died in the Senate were merely a small part of a much larger batch of House-passed bills—over three hundred (300!) in all—that met the same fate. Many of these bills passed the House with bi-partisan support and would have, presumably, easily won passage in the Senate. Yet the Democrat Majority Leader, in a cynical political ploy that violated the longstanding traditions that body, simply bottled them up in committee.

He was, apparently, trying to protect vulnerable members of his Democrat Party who were up for re-election in conservative states from being forced to vote on embarrassing amendments. On the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act, for example. (“Explain to the good people of Arkansas again, Senator Pryor, why you think that Americans should allow little girls to be killed by abortion simply because their parents wanted a boy?”)

Despite Senator Reid’s underhanded efforts, all of the vulnerable Democrat senators—every last one of them—are now gone:

In Arkansas, pro-life Rep. (and now Senator-elect) Tom Cotton (R) clobbered his pro-abortion opponent, Sen. Mark Pryor (D), winning by almost 20 percentage points.

In North Carolina, pro-life Republican Thom Tillis, with strong support from North Carolina RTL and other pro-life groups, narrowly beat pro-abortion Sen. Kay Hagan (D), despite being outspent two-to-one.

In Colorado, Rep. (and now Senator-elect) Cory Gardner (R) was hammered on the abortion issue by his opponent, pro-abortion Sen. Mark Udall (D), but gradually pulled ahead in the polls and won the race easily. Gardner was a supporter of Colorado's Personhood Amendment.

In Alaska the ballot counting continues, but pro-life Republican Dan Sullivan has led every poll for weeks and is expected to knock off pro-abortion Sen. Mark Begich (D).

Louisiana will hold a special run-off election on December 6, in which pro-life Rep. Bill Cassidy (R) is widely expected to trounce pro-abortion Sen. Mary Landrieu (D). The Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced Thursday night that the DNC was cancelling ad buys to support Landrieu in the run-off election. After having lost control of the Senate, the Dems must have felt that she was no longer worth the money, despite having loyally served her party for 18 years in the U.S. Senate.

Pro-life candidates swept the open seats as well, and held their own elsewhere.

In Georgia, pro-life Republican David Perdue cruised to a surprisingly easy victory over pro-abortion Democrat Michelle Nunn.

In Kentucky, pro-life Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell kept his seat after battling pro-abortion Alison Lundergan Grimes (D).

In Kansas, pro-life Sen. Pat Roberts (R) took out pro-abortion independent Greg Orman, winning by 15 percentage points a race that many thought Orman had in the bag.

In West Virginia, Rep. (and now Senator-elect) Shelley Moore Capito (R) buried her pro-abortion opponent, Natalie Tennant, who was supported by Emily’s List. Rep. Capito has a mixed pro-life record (NARAL rated her 30% pro-abortion; National Right to Life rated her 55% pro-life).

In South Dakota, pro-life Republican former governor Mike Rounds (R) hammered pro-abortion Rick Weiland

In Iowa, pro-life state Sen. Joni Ernst (R) mocked the phony "war on women" tactics used by pro-abortion Rep. Bruce Braley (D), and easily won the open Senate seat.

Now that the American people have, in effect, fired the obstructionist Senator Reid, and elected a Republican majority, what will happen to all of the pending pro-life legislation in the new Congress? I think the prospects are very, very good that it will all be passed.

Remember here that each and every one of the new Republican Senators is strongly pro-life, members of the only political party in America that declares in its party platform that it opposes abortion. This means that come January, pro-lifers will once again have control of both houses of Congress.

Nor should the pro-life commitment of the new Senate Majority Leader be in doubt. Among other things, Senator McConnell has specificallypromised to bring the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act to the floor of the Senate for a vote. In fact, I fully expect that all of the pro-life bills mentioned above will be voted on—and passed—by the U.S. Senate. (Indeed, there is considerable sentiment in the Senate to return to the traditions of the Senate, debating and voting on each and every one of the more than three hundred bills passed by the House.)

Facing this tsunami of pro-life legislation, the President will probably be tempted to stand against the tide and shout “Stop!” And by wielding his veto, he can slow down America’s return to sanity when it comes to ensuring that the right to life of all Americans is protected.

By working together, however, pro-lifers in the House and Senate can still win. They can incorporate these common-sense, pro-life protections into other legislation that Obama wants to see passed. In this way, Obama would virtually be forced to sign such bills into law or risk losing funding for other programs that he values. Or they can repeatedly send the same legislation to the president, educating Americans in the importance of protecting the unborn in the process, building population pressure for a change.

None of this will be easy. It will require determination on the part of Congressional leaders, and persistence on the part of pro-life members to advance the cause of family, life, and faith. Abortion can be set on the road to gradual extinction.

After all, having lost control of both houses of Congress, and with his popularity plummeting, the occupant of the White House is now the lamest of lame ducks.

PASTOR: I’D GO TO JAIL BEFORE FUNDING ABORTION

by Becky Yeh
Live Action News

On a Sunday morning, congregants fill the campus of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills, a non-denominational evangelical church located in the heart of Southern California. Since the church’s inception, Senior Pastor Jack Hibbs – a strong pro-life proponent – has encouraged his congregation to uphold religious values and fundamental liberties in the public square. Now, the church is opposing a California mandate egregiously imposed on religious institutions across the Golden State. The congregation is challenging a decision by the California Department of Managed Healthcare that forces all employers, including churches, to provide coverage for elective abortions in all health insurance plans.

“I felt violated; I felt forced,” Hibbs said in response to the abortion mandate. “I love America and I love American history, and I have a lot of invested interest in defending the unborn. I see the Constitution under attack, and I see my religious freedom under attack.”

Become a Member of the Right to Life of the UK

From Marietta Ezomo
Right to Life, UK

Apologies for the self-promotion, but this is important.

Tuesday this week saw the introduction of a bill by Fiona Bruce MP to guarantee the banning of sex-selective abortion. Tomorrow will see the Committee Stage debate of the Falconer assisted suicide bill. Both on offence and defence, the battle for the right to life continues and is ever crucial.

More than any other group, RTL has supported the campaign for greater recognition both in politics and the public square at large for the dignity and right to life of every human being. Not only that, but we’ve put our money where our mouths are by supporting women in unplanned pregnancies and vulnerable people at the end of their life.

We’ve achieved important things so far, and it’s never been more important that the campaigning and charitable activity of the right-to-life movement is in a state of active, professional, growth. We want to create a viable and expanding right-to-life movement in the UK, yet there is great scarcity when it comes to financing this. That’s why we rely very seriously on the contributions made by ordinary pro-lifers, and why we need your help.

RTL’s membership fee is £10 a year, though you can donate more if you wish. For this, members are kept up to date and given information about how they can fight for the right to life directly by writing to their members of parliament and peers. If 10,000 people joined RTL and contributed at least that £10 membership fee, that would give us £100,000 to employ at least three or four people every year, and this would make a huge difference in the sort of things we could accomplish.

Please then, in your generosity, do these three things:

1) Join RTL by following the short and easy process linked to on our website If you can pay more than £10, that would be wonderful, but even that small amount every year would really help.

2) ‘Like’ us on FB  using this link and ‘follow’ us on Twitter by using this link.

If on other social media, please also follow us on YouTube using this link; at Google+  at this link
and LinkedIn by using this link

3) Share this post, or at least make a similar one of your own making, encouraging others to join and donate to our cause. This will hopefully spread the word as far as possible and encourage right-to-lifers online to join us.

If you could do as much of that as you can manage, this would be a hugely appreciated boost for our vital work campaigning and charitable, and we thank you in advance for your invaluable support and consideration.

Nine Successful People with Down Syndrome who Prove Life is Worth Living

Nancy Flanders
Live Action News

Ninety percent of people diagnosed with Down syndrome are never allowed to be born. This is a staggering statistic that we hear quite often. Lives struck down before they ever have a chance to fulfill their missions, succeed at their dreams, or even flash a smile at their parents.
This all started when people began to believe that those with Down syndrome are better off never being born. It’s the most judgmental action our society does – deciding that someone’s life isn’t worth living. It’s time we stop believing that lie. These nine individuals with Down syndrome prove that joy and success are attainable to anyone.

'IT HAS COME TIME TO STAND AGAINST TYRANNY'

Operation Rescue chief blasts California's order for churches to pay for abortion

By Bob Unruh
WND

It’s time, the chief of a prominent pro-life organization says, to stand against the tyranny of government-mandated abortion funding.

“Since Obamacare was first introduced, we warned that the day could come when Christians would be required by the state to violate their consciences through forced payments for abortion,” said Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue and co-author of the stunning new book, “Abortion Free: Your Manual for Building a Pro-Life America One Community at a Time.”

“Now, with this mandate in California that imposes forced abortion funding on churches, it has come time for men and women of faith to stand against this tyranny and refuse to comply with this unjust law that would make us accessories to the taking of innocent human life,” he said.

His outrage was directed at a move in California where insurance regulators simply changed the definition of necessary insurance – and told insurance companies to include abortion coverage in all policies – even those funded by churches.

Post-Election Thoughts

By Judie Brown
American Life League

Congratulations are in order and are extended to everyone involved in the political segment of our movement. It is clear that today pro-life Americans now have a much better chance of exposing Planned Parenthood’s evil ways, attaining better political traction for cutting off its funding spout, and hopefully ridding the nation of its evil.

We must also rejoice and be thankful that Planned Parenthood pawns Sandra Fluke, Wendy Davis, and others like them lost their races in utterly embarrassing ways. The truth has won the day in so many political races this week.

I congratulate Personhood USA and its outstanding analysis of the results that came pouring into our living rooms this past Tuesday night. As Josh Craddock said, “The raw increase in votes for personhood in Colorado indicates that Planned Parenthood’s lies are losing their effect. . . . The bottom line is that people’s minds have been changed on the issue of abortion because of Amendment 67.”

Yet we also have a great deal of work to do in exposing the grisly underbelly of an industry that is up to no good in any number of ways. The reports of its handiwork are stunning examples of all that we have left to accomplish on our road to the ultimate victory. And it needs to be said that the election results to which I just referred have not deterred a single one of these efforts.

The marketing of Brittany Maynard’s sad but tragic end continues to inspire the proponents of assisted suicide to press forward. Adam MacLeod explained it well when he wrote that suicide never looked “more vivacious.” Today, in the wake of Brittany’s death, the proponents of euthanasia (assisted suicide) press on, elections notwithstanding.

In addition, the surrogate motherhood industry continues to offer big bucks to gullible young women like Nancy, a vulnerable Mexican girl who received seven thousand British pounds ($11,140) for carrying the child of a homosexual couple. Unfortunately, Nancy’s story is not a rarity, especially among the poor and needy who will do anything to bring money home to their poverty stricken families.

Woman’s Post-Abortion Infection Was So Severe She Had to Have Both Hands and Feet Amputated

by Kristi Burton Brown
LifeNews.com

(LiveActionNews) — In a horrific true story that illustrates how abortion hurts women, too, a French mother had both of her feet, her right forearm, and her left hand amputated after her abortion.

The woman, Priscilla Dray, suffered these injuries three years ago, in 2011. She has just gone public with her story as her efforts to sue the hospital that treated her have not yet succeeded.

Ms. Dray claims that the hospital did not administer antibiotics to her in time, thus allowing septicemia to rage unchecked in her body until portions of all four limbs had died, requiring amputation. The septicemia was caused by an infection from her abortion.

Ms. Dray was married and already the mother of children. She and her husband thought they did not need a fourth child, and so they agreed on abortion. Little did they know how drastically the abortion would change their lives forever.

California Bans Abortionist Gohari for Substandard, Abusive Practices

By Cheryl Sullenger
Operation Rescue

Sacramento, CA – Operation Rescue has been provided documents that show Maryland abortionist Abolghassem M. Gohari was forced by the California Medical Board to surrender his California medical license last year. The license surrender order was based on actions taken by the Maryland Board of Physicians in 2012, which found that Gohari had engaged in substandard abortion practices and verbally abused two patients during profanity-laced tirades.

The California Medical Board ordered Gohari not to apply for reinstatement of his license for at least three years.

In the 2012 Maryland action, Gohari was reprimanded, place on probation for one year, and ordered to pay $10,000 in fines for allowing unqualified staff to diagnose pregnancies and distribute abortion pills at his now-closed Gaithersburg abortion facility without him being present. Gohari also admitted to losing his temper when women questioned his illegal practices.

Ethicists Blast Tech Firms’ Offer to Freeze Women’s Eggs

A worker in the Leipzig Laboratory in Germany inspects the microinjection of sperm into an egg cell using a microscope in this July 2011 photo at the in vitro fertilization clinic. Bioethicists and pro-life leaders criticized a new "benefit" Facebook and Apple have offered to female employees -- paying for them to freeze their eggs and delay having children. (CNS photo/EPA)

LEVITTOWN, Pa. (CNS) — The recent announcements by Facebook and Apple that they would include among employee health benefits the option for young women to freeze their eggs for future use at a cost of up to $20,000 has been greeted with numerous objections by bioethicists and pro-life leaders.

Unlike normal medical procedures intended to restore health to a person with an illness, this proposal offers “risky technology” to otherwise healthy young women, noted Jennifer Lahl, president of the California-based Center for Bioethics and Culture.

“This is still an enterprise that has a very high failure rate,” she said, and no one yet knows the long-term health effects of the medications and other chemical agents that are used in the processes of retrieving and freezing eggs.

It’s amazing to her, Lahl said, how little attention “these very smart people” at the tech companies are paying to “human biology 101,” which knows that advancing maternal age always carries risks, and she said she wonders what benefits will be offered to women and children who suffer adverse effects.
