A Once and Future Tragedy

India’s Sterilization Campaign 39 Years Later

by by Anne Morse and Steven Mosher
39 years ago today, Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India, received the power to rule by decree from the Indian president. She immediately declared a state of emergency, suspending numerous civil liberties. This freed her government to forcibly sterilize millions of Indian men and women in the 21 months that followed.
Public officials mobilized en masse to meet statewide sterilization targets. The sterilizations that followed were carried out under so-called “compul-suasion,” (a combination of compulsion and persuasion), with a heavy emphasis on the former.
Different states used different tactics. People in Rajasthan with more than three children were banned from holding any government job unless and until they had been sterilized. In Madyha Pradesh, irrigation water was withheld from village fields until sterilization quotas were met. In Uttar Pradesh, teachers were told that they must submit to sterilization or lose a month’s salary. Health department officials in Uttar Pradesh had their pay withheld until they met their quotas for sterilization. In the state of Bihar, public food rations were denied to families with more than two children. The local government refused to put in a much-needed village well until “100 percent of eligible couples” underwent sterilizations. [1] [2]
In some cases even more brutal tactics were used. In a Muslim village in the state of Haryana, men were rounded up by police for sterilization. According to a report in the The Indian Express:
“The villagers of Uttawar were shaken from their sleep by loudspeakers ordering the menfolk—all above 15—to assemble at the bus-stop on the main Nuh-Hodol road. When they emerged, the found the whole village surrounded by the police. With the menfolk on the road, the police went into the village to see if anyone was hiding...as the villagers tell it, the men on the road were sorted into eligible cases. . . and they were taken from there to clinics to be sterilized.”[3]
Muslims, along with the illiterate and the lower castes, were disproportionately sterilized. Men were given vasectomies, while women were given tubal ligations.
Between June 25, 1975 and March 1977, an estimated 11 million men and women were sterilized using such tactics. Another 1 million women were inserted with IUDs.< [4]
The sterilizations were performed in assembly-line fashion, in great haste, and in unhygienic conditions. There was no “follow-up care” offered whatsoever. Many men and women died from subsequent infections. Some 1,800 families filed wrongful death lawsuits on behalf of deceased relatives, but the actual death toll was much higher.
It did not take long, given these horrific tactics, for public anger over the forced sterilization campaign to result in riots. Over 20 people died, and many more were injured, in violent “anti family-planning” protests.  Prime Minister Gandhi called a halt to the campaign in March 1977, and was quickly voted out of office as soon as “the emergency” ended.
It is difficult for most people to accept that such a campaign could have occurred in living memory. But similar campaigns have been carried out in Indonesia and Peru even more recently, and are happening right now in China and Vietnam.
Many in the population control movement still believe that such campaigns are justified because of the danger posed by too many people. They are still repeating what apologists for the Indian program were saying at the time: “I’m personally opposed to forced sterilization but, after all, Indiais overpopulated.”
We at PRI believe that abuses of basic human rights, such as the right to bear children, can never be excused by such “ends justifies the means” arguments. Nor do we accept cost-benefit analyses which attempt to define (and thus denigrate) the worth of the human person in terms of dollars and cents as valid.
And let us not forget that, on the big question, the population controllers are simply wrong. If they were paying attention (instead of just mouthing anti-people slogans), they would understand that the most pressing population problem today is not too many people, but a rapidly aging world-population. Ignoring this reality, population controllers continue to espouse a myth that not only makes no economic sense, but literally kills those it targets.
Let us never forget the suffering, degradation, and humiliation inflicted upon the poorest and most vulnerable people in India beginning 39 years ago today. The only way to ensure that such violations cease is to end the war on people once and for all.

Supreme Court Decision On Hobby Lobby: A Great Day For The Religious Freedom Of Family Businesses

Americans can follow faith in running closely held businesses

Court leaves open whether ‘accommodation’ violates RFRA

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision today in favor of Hobby Lobby Stores and Conestoga Wood Specialties means “justice has prevailed,” said Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty. The Court ruled that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) “preventive services” mandate violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) as applied to these employers to the extent that it would have forced them to provide insurance coverage for drugs and devices that violate their religious convictions on respect for human life. The statement follows:

“We welcome the Supreme Court’s decision to recognize that Americans can continue to follow their faith when they run a family business. In this case, justice has prevailed, with the Court respecting the rights of the Green and Hahn families to continue to abide by their faith in how they seek their livelihood, without facing devastating fines. Now is the time to redouble our efforts to build a culture that fully respects religious freedom.

The Generosity of Catholic Family Planning

CAITLIN MARCHAND
Catholic Exchange

In a contraceptive culture it is little wonder that natural family planning is often in the Catholic spotlight.  Perhaps it is also little wonder that we accidentally slip into using the secular world’s terms or attitudes when discussing it.  It is well established to anybody willing to hear that NFP is a licit practice.  In fact, it is not merely an acceptable but second rate choice made by second rate Catholics but can and should be undertaken in such a spirit as to be equally receptive to God’s will and lovingly exercise our role in His creation of new life with responsibility and generosity.  However, the question of when and why to avoid pregnancy in particular circumstances can easily become confusing and some of the language surrounding the discussion adds to this.
First, there is a tendency to speak of family planning decisions in the long term.  We consider the overall number of children in a family, or how many years there are between children.  Yet, part of the beauty and challenge of natural fertility awareness is that it deals only in the now.  Every cycle, in some sense every day, one must reexamine the family situation and the possibility of adding another child.  While depending on the reasons for using NFP to avoid pregnancy one may have some idea of how long this will be necessary the question is only ever “what about this child, today?” not “how many children to we want total?” or “what is our five year plan?”.

Nothing Else Could Save This Baby’s Life, That’s When Her Big Brother Performed a Miracle

Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way, she did what she could to help her 3-year-old son, Michael, prepare for a new sibling. They found out that the new baby was going to be a girl, and day after day, night after night, Michael sang to his little sister in Mommy’s tummy. He was building a bond of love with his little sister before he even met her. The pregnancy progressed normally for Karen.

In time, the labor pains came. Soon it was every five minutes, every three, every minute. But serious complications arose during delivery and Karen found herself in hours of labor. Would a C-section be required? Finally, after a long struggle, Michael’s little sister was born. But she was in very serious condition.
With a siren howling in the night, the ambulance rushed the infant to the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital, Knoxville, Tennessee. The days inched by. The little girl got worse. The pediatric specialist regretfully had to tell the parents, “There is very little hope. Be prepared for the worst.”

Safe Surrender: An Organization Dedicated to Saving the Lives of Abandoned Babies

Six times so far this year, Kerry Silverstrom has tracked stories of abandoned babies like the one she adopted, newborns left at fire stations and hospitals in Los Angeles County by mothers too desperate or sick or broke to keep them.
Just since Memorial Day, three infant girls have been relinquished to the region’s Safe Surrender program, one of the largest in the nation to provide no-questions-asked adoption — and legal amnesty — to women who've run out of other options.
For Silverstrom, the news reports are a haunting reminder of the call she got in April 2006 asking whether she’d take the tiny, dark-haired boy whose mother gave birth in a hospital bathroom — and then left him behind.
“I was crazed and I was shaking,” Silverstrom recalls. “I had 20 minutes to decide. I called my husband and he said, ‘If this is what you want.’ I said ‘OK, we’re in.’ And the social worker said, ‘Congratulations, you have a son.’”

South Dakota Baby Given a Slim Chance of Living Celebrates Second Birthday

Every morning, Renner Wollman wakes up his dad, Brian, with a hearty "Dada" from his crib. Their routine then includes playing ball and listening to tunes. "He sways to the music, and when it stops, he looks at you funny," Brian says.

Renner, who wasn't expected to even enter the world alive, turns 2 on Friday.

During the pregnancy with their third child, Brian and his wife, Karen –
the family lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota – were told that he had a slew of medical complications, including Down syndrome and a condition known as hydrops fetalis, which causes fluid buildup in the body. The prognosis was dire.

Caesar’s Thumb

Please picture in your mind, if you will, two murder victims, both females, who are both exactly the same age. Let’s assume that all the evidence is clear—in fact, the murderers admit to intentionally killing each victim—and let’s name one murder victim ‘A’ and the second murder victim ‘B’.
Imagine that A is murdered in a building on the north side of Main Street, and a B is murdered in a building on the south side of Main Street. A’s murder on the north side is investigated, prosecuted and the murderer is sent to jail because it is considered illegal, but B’s murder on the south side is held to be complete legal, merely because it occurred in that location, and is not prosecuted.
Imagine that A and B are killed by the mothers of A and B, but A’s murder takes place two weeks earlier than B’s murder. A’s murder is legal simply because it occurred at a different time than B’s killing, which is investigated and prosecuted.
Finally, ponder another scenario in which A is killed by her father and B is killed by her mother. The father is prosecuted and imprisoned according to the law, but the mother is never prosecuted because her killing of her daughter is held to be completely legal.
Ridiculous and arbitrary, wouldn’t you think? Why would one victim’s murder be illegal, and the other completely legal merely based upon factors of time, place and assailant? How is a killing not a killing?
Both A and B are “unborn members of the species homo sapiens.”

New Jersey's Assisted Suicide Bill pulled from the Assembly Board List Yesterday!‏

From Marie Tasy, Executive Director
New Jersey Right to Life

Today, I am happy to share the good news that the Assembly pulled A2270, the Assisted Suicide Bill from the Board List around 8 p.m. last night  after the sponsor was unable to get enough votes to pass the bill.  It was a long day which involved a lot of interaction with legislators, but it was well worth the effort.
Unlike the Compassion and Choices advocates who wrote the Assisted Suicide law and were apprised of the scheduling of the committee hearing and vote well in advance, we were dealing with last minute notice about the hearing and false and misleading information about the vote.   Despite those roadblocks, we were able to let our legislators know that NJ citizens are opposed to assisted suicide.
This was a team effort on the part of so many people, and I want to personally thank you for doing your part to stop this terribly misguided bill.  Our work is far from over, however. The sponsor told the media after the session was over that he plans to bring the bill back up in September.
Please continue to email, phone, and plan to meet with your legislators over the summer to communicate your opposition to this issue.  Please tell them that you expect them to Vote No on this bill if it comes up for a vote.  Please also make every effort to educate and speak to friends and family about this issue at your summer barbecues and parties.   Every district is represented by three legislators; a State Senator and 2 Assembly members so please contact all three.   If you don't know who your legislators are, please call the office of Legislative Services at 1-800-792-8630 or go to the NJ Legislature's webpage here.
In the meantime, we will be watching this issue and will inform you when any additional action needs to be taken. Please provide us with any feedback you may receive regarding your legislators' position on this issue.
I am including a link to a great op-ed by John B. Kelly that explains the dangers of assisted suicide which you may want to read and share.  Op-ed.
Again, thank you!

SIDEWALK CHRONICLES: THE BUFFER ZONE

by Reverend Katherine Marple
KeepLifeLegal.com

A great victory for our First Amendment rights, the Constitution and the unborn; in an unanimous opinion, the court held that buffer zones violates free speech rights…not that we didn’t know this.
Sidewalk counselors are the last line of defense for the unborn scheduled to be executed. We are a boots on the ground attempt to save lives and spread the Gospel. On the day my mother forced me to abort, there were NO sidewalk counselors, not one person was there to save me and my baby.
The Abortion Czars of America [Planned Parenthood, NARAL, Nat'l Abortion Federation, Obama, etc.] have tried over and over again to sell abortion to frightened pregnant women since 1973. The agenda to quell and kill unwanted children has been hidden in plain sight while we drive past these death pits on our way to the store or work, totally oblivious to the deaths of our most innocent.

CrMS + NaPro Technology = Prescription for Marital Bliss

A true revealing story:

Our journey with the Creighton Model FertilityCare System & NaProTechnology has been a tremendous blessing in so many ways! Matt, my husband, and heard about Creighton in our PreCana marriage prep class back in 2007. When we got married we initially started using another form of NFP, the Sympothermal Method.  I had always had very irregular cycles since I was a teenager and was placed on birth control pills without ever getting to the root cause of the problem, even when I asked my previous OB/GYN several times to figure out the cause. However, when I stopped the pills and started charting, I had only one cycle and then nothing for 6 months. We were very distraught and wondered if we would be able to conceive.

We knew another couple using Creighton and were aware of its medical applications [NaPro Technology] to diagnose and treat reproductive problems. By working with my FertilityCare Practitioner [FCP], Marcia Niznan, we learned the method. After several months of charting met with a doctor  trained in Creighton, Dr. Eleanor Tiongson. Matt and I knew right away that this was the best decision ever. They took ample time to look at what was going on with me individually, and we received very personalized care. Dr. Tiongson was able to make a diagnosis of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome [PCOS] and low progesterone levels based on my chart and lab work timed strategically with the charting. I began the prescribed treatment. It was such a relief to finally have an answer to what the problem was! It took some time, but with treatment I began to have cycles again and ovulate. I also had a series of ultrasounds with Dr. Golden-Tevald to assess ovulation and much other valuable information.

Through using the Creighton & NaProTechnology, we were very blessed to have our 3 beautiful children-- our daughters ages 4 and 2, and a baby boy 3 months l old! Dr Tiongson continued to monitor my progesterone levels during all pregnancies, and when it was low I was treated with progesterone according to the protocol. Those we worked with not only provided teaching, diagnosis and high effective medical treatments, but also a great deal of emotional and spiritual support during our journey.  We will truly be forever grateful to them!!!

During the past 7 years, Matt and I have used Creighton to avoid pregnancy [when my hormone levels were abnormal to avoid increased risk of miscarriage] and achieve pregnancy. Also during the  times of breastfeeding, I continued to chart and could assess the possible return of fertility even before resuming cycles - amazing!  I feel I understand so much more about my health and fertility, and this knowledge has led us to appreciate and be extremely grateful for the miracle of fertility and life. The benefits to our marriage also include improved communication and increased respect  for each other.

It is frustrating that very often with the conventional approach to women's health, the time and energy are not spent to make an individual diagnosis for a person or couple, and many doctors are quick to offer birth control pills to mask a problem, and artificial reproductive technologies such as IVF to couples with infertility. It can be especially confusing when these treatments conflict with the moral and ethical principles of people and they know of no other options.

It is so important to spread the word so more people can be aware of Creighton. I highly recommend it to my friends and relatives. I also speak at our church's PreCana program regarding Creighton & NaPro so more couples know the truth about what it is and all of its benefits. I would highly recommend it to all couples as a method of family planning, and also an excellent way to monitor a woman's reproductive health- knowing that there are treatments available for a host of abnormalities and issues should they arise. The method and the treatments are scientifically based, extremely well researched, highly effective and do not violate the moral and ethical principles of Catholics or those of any faith.
If we had not learned the Creighton Model I would never know about the diagnosis of my PCOS and hormonal abnormalities. I know that the treatments we used with NaPro were treating the cause of the problem itself, and restored fertility to enable me and my husband to conceive and have the blessing of our children. What a joy! We are forever grateful to those who have helped us on our journey, and hope that more people become aware of the beautiful truth of Creighton & NaPro!

How Can a Woman Receive Healing and Recovery After an Abortion?

by Cary Byrd
President and Founder of eDrugSearch.com

Unfortunately, women deciding to have an abortion and later regretting it is something that happens very often in today's world. While it is impossible to go back in time and reverse what has been done, it is possible for women to experience abortion recovery and abortion healing after the procedure has been preformed. The God of all healing and comfort can easily help women in their time of need by easing their pain and sorrow, while at the same time, bringing joy back into their lives.

Unplanned Pregnancy Can Be Scary.

Children are always a gift to be treasured. However, their arrival into this world does not always occur in the most ideal situations. The conception of unwanted children is one of the consequences that people risk occurring when they engage in pre-marital sex. When a pregnancy occurs that is not planned and completely unexpected, it can be a scary ordeal. This is especially true for a person who is not physically, emotionally or financially prepared for the massive responsibility of raising a child on their own. When teenage girls or women decide to get an abortion, it is often because they are vulnerable, desperate, confused or scared. While they are trying to figure out the correct decision, they are often tricked into believing the idea that unborn children are not really human beings at that stage of development. It is only later, after the abortion has been performed, that they realize what a mistake they have made. This manifests itself in the form of depression, guilt and post-abortion stress syndrome. However, abortion recovery and abortion healing can always be achieved.

Panic at Planned Parenthood

Boys Pray to Stop Abortion During Chivalry Camp

From John Ritchie
Tradition Family Property, Student Action

The participants of the 2014 Call to Chivalry Camp put the spirit of Catholic knighthood into practice with a simple yet powerful demonstration on June 11 outside the Planned Parenthood center in Camden, New Jersey. Several boys held a banner, stating: "With God's grace, our generation will stop abortion." The honks were continuous in response to a "Honk for Life" sign.

The youthful rally made Planned Parenthood pro-abortion workers panic. According to a police officer who showed up, they were so upset that they called 911.

"You're not in trouble," said the officer, "They [Planned Parenthood] called us and said that you were blocking the sidewalk, stopping traffic and throwing red paint at people...," then he paused and looked at the boys peacefully praying the rosary and singing hymns, he continued, "but that's obviously not the case. You're perfectly within your rights to stay as long as you want. If you happen to need us for any reason, give us a call."

This was the first rally against abortion for many of the boys. The sound of the bagpipes boosted the morale of the participants and encouraged all those passing by to show their support for the unborn.

To conclude, three Hail Mary's were prayed and the TFP battle cry was given: Tradition, Family, Property (three times)... America, America, America. The young men liked it so much that they wanted to prolong the event and asked if more rallies were on the agenda during the camp. By doing this honorable deed for the unborn, they were living out the Tenth Commandment of Chivalry: "Thou shalt be everywhere and always the champion of the right and the good against injustice and evil."

FIRST THEY CAME FOR THE PRO-LIFERS: GROUP WARNS ABOUT U.S. SENATE BILL

Democrat members of the U.S. Senate are seeking a blank check to limit free speech, and the National Right to Life Committee is warning about the impact

by Charlie Butts

"This proposed constitutional amendment would give Congress and the 50 state legislatures complete authority to restrict and even criminalize any type of communication of the public that might influence elections," claims National Right to Life spokesman Douglas Johnson.

Johnson is referring to S.J. Res. 19, which is being pushed by Democrats after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on campaign contributions in the Citizens United case.

Government.gov describes the bill as a constitutional amendment that "grants Congress and the states the power to regulate the raising and spending of money and in-kind equivalents with respect to federal and state elections, respectively."

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

New York Pro-Lifers Defeat Another Abortion Bill

Pro-Lifers Defeat New York Bill Allowing Shooting Babies Through the Heart With Poison to Kill Them

by Steven Ertelt
LifeNews.com

The pro-life community in New York has again defeated legislation in the state legislature that could have allowed a particularly gruesome method of late-term abortions.

Yet again, the New York legislature adjourned without a vote on the abortion expansion bill Governor Andrew Cuomo was pushing. The decision to not bring the bill up for a vote came after massive opposition from pro-life advocates.

Despite opposition from pro-lifers, one state legislator compared the pro-abortion bill with the 10 Commandments.

Shortly after nine o’clock this evening, the State Senate finished its business and ended the 2014 regular legislative session,” New Yorkers for Life said Friday evening. “We are pleased to report that New Yorkers for Life and our pro-life allies have successfully blocked Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Abortion Expansion Act from becoming law despite strong pro-abortion opposition. Thank you for your continued support!

“Face the Truth” Day Exposes Chicago Abortionist Mandy Gittler

Posted by John Jansen

Abortionist Mandy Gittler was responsible for the death of 24-year old Tonya Reaves at Planned Parenthood’s Near North Center in Chicago on July 20, 2012, and has performed over 15,000 abortions in her career. On June 18, the Pro-Life Action League visited both of her Chicago abortion facilities to expose the truth about her deadly business.

Our first stop was at All Women’s Health, an abortion clinic operated by Gittler in the city’s Bucktown neighborhood. Right from the get-go, by the time we started deploying sign holders, Chicago Police were already on site.

Ever since I went to my first March For Life when I was four I have been shocked that unborn children are killed. At the age of fourteen, I became aware of how important it is to take action in protecting life. I was able to meet Lila Rose who at the age of fifteen decided to take a step against abortion by going undercover in abortion clinics.

Through this she has been able to close many abortion clinics, save lives, and influence other young people, like myself. I was so struck by the courage and determination of such a young person, that I decided that I had to do something to stop the abortion industry as well.

However, I was intimidated by the idea of stepping out to proclaim my belief and having my peers look down on me. It took me a year and a half to face my fears and not let apprehension control my actions. When I turned sixteen I decided that I had a mission. I needed to show the world that this younger generation is pro-life and willing to fight for the unborn, contrary to what the media shows. In 2012, I started a pro-life Twitter account. This was the start of Prolife Youth.

Gov. Martinez’s Campaign Manager Responds with Profanity to Members of Pro-life Community

By Tara Shaver

Albuquerque, NM — On Saturday, June 21, Protest ABQ held a public awareness campaign in a local neighborhood when a man, identified by group members as Jay McCleskey, Gov. Susana Martinez’s Re-Election Campaign Manager and Chief Campaign Strategist, confronted the pro-life activists stating, “You are all pieces of S***!”

“The pro-life community has been asking Gov. Martinez what she is willing to do to STOP pre-born child killing in New Mexico. We have been completely ignored until today,” stated a pregnant and astonished Tara Shaver who was present with her husband and children. Several members of our group identified Mr. McCleskey and heard his vulgarity and harsh words.

Protest ABQ continues to highlight and focus on those within our community who are supporting or condoning pre-born child killing through peaceful protests and other efforts.

Last week, pro-life groups in Albuquerque had an opportunity to expose Gov. Martinez’s inconsistent pro-life position. Despite Gov. Martinez’s campaign statements that she is pro-life, she has failed to do even one thing to address the fact that abortion remains unrestricted through all nine months of pregnancy in New Mexico.

SIDEWALK CHRONICLES: Are We Doing it Wrong?

By Rev. Katherine Marple
KeepLifeLegal

Well, to be sure IF you are doing it wrong, there has to be a benchmark to judge by. And right now, I see none in the region where we live and witness.

Being a Christian comes with responsibilities to others, and not just the ‘pretty’ ones. How many times have prolife ministries come churches to be a presence on the sidewalk? But do they come? Not many, if any at all.

Okay, how many times has prolife ministries mentioned through social media a prolife ministry opportunity and hardly anyone shows?

One-Child Policy Drives Chinese Father of Four to Suicide

Wang sacrifices his life to embarrass officials into letting his “illegal” children attend school

by Steven Mosher and Paul Wilson

China’s draconian one-child policy has claimed many victims—hundreds of millions of unborn children have lost their lives, tens of thousands of women have died from botched abortions and sterilizations, and tens of thousands more have committed suicide to end the pain of late-term, forced abortions—but Wang Guangrong’s story is particularly tragic.

Wang, a 37-year old Chinese father of four, had long been persecuted by local government officials for daring to flout China’s restrictions against multiple children. He had been subjected to heavy fines, had his livestock confiscated, and his children declared to be non-persons.

Things came to a head when Wang sought to have his children, three daughters and one son, enrolled in the local school. Public education in China is free, at least up to junior high school, but local officials insisted that Wang pay another round of heavy fines before agreeing to admit his children. After the previous rounds of fines and punishments, Wang and his wife were destitute.

They had nothing left to give the government—except Wang’s life. Public suicides in protest of official wrongdoing have a long history in China. So Wang decided to end his life in the hope that this would shame local government officials into allowing his children to attend school. That way, they would have the chance at a better life that an education would provide them with.

A British newspaper, the Daily Express interviewed Wang’s wife, Wu Jinmin, who explained that her husband grew desperate after his children were denied schooling. “He couldn't take it anymore,” said Wu. “‘What did we bring them into the world for, to be as dumb as cattle?’ he said to me. ‘I cannot see my children grow up uneducated.’ And then he cut his wrists.”

Wang’s sacrifice was not in vain. When the domestic and international press picked up on the story, local government officials were quick to engage in damage control. They promised to compensate his widow for the loss of her husband and even pledged to build a new house for her and the children.
We are glad that Wang’s widow and children will not be left to starve in the shadowy world that China’s illegal children occupy. But millions of other children of the shadows—“black” children, as they are called in China—have not been nearly as lucky. They have not just been abandoned by the Chinese state, they have been positively ostracized by a government which refuses to feed, house, clothe, or educate these lost children in any way.

One sees them begging on the streets, or working in sweatshops, or hawking cheap trinkets to passers-by, all in a desperate effort to survive. Their only crime is that they were born without official permission in a state where birth permits are mandatory.

None of this is any secret, of course. The Chinese people are constantly barraged with anti-natal propaganda, and are well aware of the extensive system of punishments that awaits those like Wang who violate the misnamed “family planning policy.” Everyone in China understands that having multiple children makes you—and your “black” children—enemies of the state.

We would not have predicted that the one-child policy would have endured this long, given its devastating effects on Chinese society. Suicides, forced abortions, sex-selection abortion—all are rampant in China. China’s bachelor population already numbers in the tens of millions, while its population of elderly is also in the tens of millions.

What kind of a government considers it a crime to bear too many children, and punishes those who do? What kind of a country leaves loving fathers like Wang Guangrong with no way to help his own children but to take his own life?

The pro-life Population Research Institute is dedicated to ending human rights abuses committed in the name of "family planning," and to ending counter-productive social and economic paradigms premised on the myth of "overpopulation." Find us at pop.org.
