From the Pastor's Corner - Governor Cuomo's Offensive New Law

by The Rev. George William Rutler

The mayor of a French town commissioned a statue of the rationalist Emile Zola and, intent on provocation, he ordered that the bronze for it be from the bells of a church. Similarly, Governor Andrew Cuomo chose to sign into law our nation’s most offensive abortion bill on the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, to ecstatic applause in the state capitol. Then he ordered that the Empire State Building, the Freedom Tower, and the Alfred E. Smith Building in Albany be lit in pink. The ancient Caesars dressed in red as the emblem of victory; Cuomo drapes himself in pink.

Mark the ironies: The Freedom Tower is at the site of the memorial to the dead of 9/11, and listed on it are eleven “unborn babies” killed with their mothers. And Al Smith would have resigned rather than endorse infanticide.

In Orwellian “Newspeak,” just as a concentration camp was called a “Joycamp,” the killing of innocent unborn infants is sanctioned by a “Reproductive Health Act.” Now it is legal to destroy a fully formed baby one minute before birth and, should it survive a botched attempt to cut it up, there is no requirement to provide medical help. The abortionist does not even have to be a medical doctor.

The legislation was deferred over years by politicians who, if not paragons of empathy, were appalled by its excess. It has only passed because the Democrats now control both houses of the New York state legislature. Politics aside, the governor teased a religious question. Not only does he mention that he once was an altar boy, but he concluded the signing celebration by telling the legislators, “God bless you.”

Perhaps he is succumbing to the temptation that some of the senators of Rome detected as evidence of decadence: the apotheosis, or divinizing of emperors in an Imperial Cult complimentary to the traditional deities. Andrew Cuomo, over the objections of more than 100,000 petitioners, named the Tappan Zee replacement bridge in honor of his father. In the dark ages, there was a superstition that a bridge could only be safe if a sacrificial victim was buried in its foundation. There are many innocent bones that could be buried under the Mario Cuomo Bridge, and his son perpetuates the cult.

Doctor Edward Peters, one of our nation’s most venerable canon lawyers, has written: "Penal jurisdiction in this matter rests with the bishop of Albany (as the place where some or all of the canonically criminal conduct was committed, per Canon 1412), and/or with the archbishop of New York (as the place where Cuomo apparently has canonical domicile, per Canon 1408)."

These matters are beyond the ken or jurisdiction of a parish priest, but it is clear that it is not sufficient for Churchmen blithely to suppose that an adequate response to the massacre of innocents by the inversion of reason is nothing more than an expression of “profound sadness.”

Fr. George W. Rutler is pastor of  the Church of St. Michael in New York City.

Moving Boldly Forward

I’ve recently read the Planned Parenthood 2017-2018 Annual Report online and have decided to take a page out of their book…. but tweaked it a bit (in bold lettering)  to tell the other side of the story – the side of children who cannot defend themselves and are relying on us to speak for them.   The below paragraph is a revised version of PP’s “Message from our Leadership”.   Everything PP claims to do we also are doing – but in the name of voiceless children:  moving boldly forward, going on the offensive, having fundamental truth on our side!!

“Despite the challenges ahead, we will move boldly forward and expand our reach, our services, and our impact. With more of our supporters in positions to effect change, we are no longer simply playing defense — we’re going on the offensive.  There is a huge unmet need for the people we serve (unborn children and their mothers!). But we’ve got fundamental truth on our side: that your body is your own. If it’s not, you cannot be truly free or equal…..and each child’s body is his or her own!!”

Living in a society that accepts ending an unborn child’s life is surreal for those of us who believe a life should have value.   We are urged constantly to attend to the needs of every vulnerable group out there...except the unborn.  For some reason they are the only ones who have been deemed “discardable” by our electorate.  And to society’s disgrace, this practice is not only accepted but applauded and paraded about as if taking a child’s life is a sign of independence and strength.

One way you can go on the offensive against abortion is to participate in the 40 Days for Life Campaign.  Join a local campaign near year and show your support for our unborn children.  If you need a little nudge to get involved, check out your state’s Department of Health website and see the number of abortions recorded.  In Pennsylvania, we had 30,818 babies aborted in 2016…that’s 30,818 reasons for me to get involved!

Mom Gave Birth to Dying Daughter: ‘Choose Love, Even When It’s Hard’

heartbeat, heart, chose life

By Anna Reynolds
Live Action News

In 2002, Sarah C. Williams discovered that her preborn daughter had a life-limiting disorder. She shared her story in an opinion piece in USA Today about why she attended the March for Life this year: because she chose life for her dying daughter. Williams describes how her doctor informed her that her baby suffered from lethal skeletal dysplasia, which meant that when she was born she would not be able to breathe. However, the doctor did not say “she”; he called the baby “it.” He instructed Williams and her husband on how to schedule an abortion.

Williams writes that she was in shock after the news, but “when the shock lifted, I knew she wasn’t an ‘it.’ She was my daughter, a sick and dying child who needed me.” Williams and her husband named their daughter Cerian, and Williams carried her daughter for 16 weeks following the diagnosis. Cerian passed away during labor.

Williams, who has shared her experiences in the spiritual autobiography “Perfectly Human,” writes candidly about how challenging her decision was for other people. She wrote, “What I did not anticipate in making the decision to carry a sick baby to term was the anger that it would provoke in others. I discovered that we live in a society in which the decision not to abort an abnormal fetus requires a defense.”

A colleague went so far as to suggest that Williams had an obligation to herself and her two living children to abort her disabled daughter in case she survived birth and was severely handicapped. Friends told her it was wrong to “bring suffering into the world if you know you can prevent it.” Williams notes that these arguments are based on a limited understanding of choice and freedom. She asked:

But what if freedom is not what we think? What if freedom is the willingness to put my own comfort to one side in order to care for another person? What if freedom is the ability to choose to love, even when it is hard?

For Williams, after she chose life, carrying Cerian to term was an “unexpected privilege.” While there was tremendous grief, there was also joy, and she says Cerian taught her what it means to be fully human.

In her book, she wrote, “Cerian is not a strong religious principle or a rule that compels me to make hard and fast ethical decisions. She is a beautiful person who is teaching me to love the vulnerable, treasure the unlovely, and face fear with dignity and hope.”

The Party of Abortion and … Infanticide?

The murder of babies is an atrocity too far, but will Senate Democrats agree?

Jonathan Abbamonte

Population Research Institute

We never thought we would miss Bill Clinton (and we still don't, really). But it is worth noting that his position that abortion should be "safe, legal and rare" is now officially not welcome in the Democrat Party of today. Instead, woke Democrats are increasingly embracing the radical position that all abortions should be legal, even those that result in the deaths of full-term, healthy infants.

All the more reason why Congress should immediately pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act (S. 130). The bill would establish criminal penalties for any health care practitioner in the U.S. who neglects, intentionally kills, or fails to provide standard medical care to any child born alive following an induced abortion. The bill would also require health care workers to report to state or federal authorities any cases where infants born alive were not provided the necessary care.

"Everyone in the Senate ought to be able to say unequivocally that killing that little baby is wrong," Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE), the bill's sponsor, said in a statement, "This shouldn't be complicated."

But it may be.

Last night, Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) blocked the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act from passing on unanimous consent, a procedure under Rule 14 that allows a bill to be fast-tracked if no Senator opposes. Sen. Murray objected to the bill, claiming the language of S. 130 was a "gross misrepresentation" of the bill's purpose to prohibit infanticide.

"We've moved beyond all common sense when this body can no longer unanimously condemn murder," Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) said after the bill was blocked. It is now up to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) whether to bring S. 130 to the floor for a roll-call vote.

And that's not all! Read more here

Abortion Activists Wore White at SOTU to Celebrate Suffragists, But Early Feminists Were Pro-Life

By Micaiah Bilger
Life News

Pro-abortion politicians made sure they were noticed during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday by wearing all white to the event.

Supposedly, the white worn by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others symbolized the early suffragettes and their tireless advocacy for women’s rights.

“Nearly 100 years after women earned the right to vote, more than 100 women are serving in Congress,” Florida Congresswoman Val Demings wrote on Twitter
“Tonight the @HouseDemWomen are wearing suffragette white to remind the president that we—and the rights our ancestors fought for—aren’t going anywhere.”
Their not-so-subtle statement really appeared to be about the president’s pro-life policies, not women’s rights, however. Democrats often conflate abortion with women’s rights.

But the interesting thing about their all-white protest is that the pro-abortion politicians do not appear to know their history. As LifeNews pointed out Tuesday evening, the early suffragettes were unashamedly pro-life.

Tonight, pro-abortion members of Congress are wearing all white, supposedly to represent the early women suffragists.

They just forgot one thing...

Susan B. Anthony and the early feminist leaders were pro-life. http://bit.ly/2JHh3Dp

The first-wave feminists took the opposite position on abortion to many feminists today. Suffragette Alice Paul, who was instrumental in campaigning for women’s right to vote, described abortion as “the ultimate exploitation of women.”

Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton also took a firm stand for unborn babies by refusing to publish ads for abortion in their newspaper, “The Revolution.” They also ran a number of articles and editorials against abortion.

Pro-Abortion Senate Democrats Block Vote on Legislation to Stop Infanticide

“We’re talking about the most vulnerable among us, and we have a public official in America out there again and again defending a practice,” Sasse said.
“This is infanticide that we’re talking about.”

By Steven Ertelt
Life News

A leading pro-abortion U.S. Senator today objected to a Senate vote on legislation that would stop infanticide. The vote would come after Virginia Governor Ralph Northam endorsed infanticide on a radio show last week.

Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse had wanted to vote on Monday on a bill to protect babies born alive after failed abortions.

The Senate vote would have come days after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law new legislation that allows abortions up to birth and after Virginia Governor Ralph Northam backed infanticide during a radio interview — saying that he’s perfectly content if doctors and parents discuss letting disabled babies die after birth.

Sasse asked of the Senate for unanimous consent to vote on legislation that would offer them appropriate Medical Care and treatment.

However, speaking on behalf of pro-abortion Senate Democrats, pro-abortion Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat from Washington State, stood up and objected to the vote.

Senator Marco Rubio condemned Democrats for blocking a vote on the bill.

“That Senate Democrats would block a bill to protect a baby who survives an abortion speaks volumes,” said Rubio. “Supporting a newborn’s right to life should not be a partisan issue. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats, like their colleagues in Virginia and New York, seem to have no issue publicly supporting legal infanticide. It is clear that, on the issue of life, extremism has become mainstream in the Democratic Party.”
Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Kristen Waggoner told LifeNews she was disappointed abortion advocates objected.
“Every human life is valuable and every single baby deserves to be protected. Alliance Defending Freedom works for a world where abortion is unthinkable and undesirable. We defend the pregnancy centers and medical professionals who offer expecting moms hope and help. We respectfully challenge our elected leaders to affirm the basic human rights of vulnerable children—born and unborn. We’re disappointed by the Senate’s failure to provide legal protection for babies who survive abortions. We’re grateful for Sen. Sasse’s leadership and for every elected leader who understands the human rights at stake and fights to protect vulnerable babies,” Waggoer said.
For Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, it was time to put up or shut up. With 10 Democrat Senators having refused to condemn Virginia governor Ralph Northam for supporting infanticide, Sasse had enough and wanted them to go on record. They refused.

Sasse tried using the Rule 14 process to expedite consideration of the bill, as well as calling for a vote to pass the bill under unanimous consent on the Senate floor.

“I’m going to ask all 100 senators to come to the floor and be against infanticide. This shouldn’t be complicated,” Sasse said before the objection came.

Washington Bishop: Pro-Choice Politicians Should Not Receive Communion

In the wake of liberal abortion legislation gaining traction in several states recently, one Catholic bishop has made it clear that pro-choice politicians will not be welcome to receive communion in his diocese.

Bishop Thomas Daly of Spokane, Washington, sent a letter to his diocese Friday, doubling down on the Church’s pro-life teachings while admonishing self-professed Catholics who endorse pro-abortion legislation.

Politicians who reside in the Catholic Diocese of Spokane, and who obstinately persevere in their public support for abortion, should not receive Communion without first being reconciled to Christ and the Church,” Bishop Daly wrote, as reported by the Catholic News Agency.
“Efforts to expand access to abortion, allowing murder of children up to the moment of birth is evil,” he added. “Children are a gift from God, no matter the circumstances of their conception. They not only have a right to life, but we as a society have a moral obligation to protect them from harm.”
The bishop’s strong words come as politicians like New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo have aggressively campaigned for the expansion of abortion up until birth. In his letter, he mentioned Cuomo directly, calling his behavior “unacceptable.”
“The champion of this abortion legislation is Andrew Cuomo, a Catholic and governor of New York. Governor Cuomo frequently cites his Catholic faith in support of legislation he favors. His public witness as a Catholic politician, coupled with his stalwart support of abortion, is unacceptable,” Bishop Daly wrote.
After signing the now-infamous Reproductive Health Act, Cuomo ordered that One World Trade Center in Manhattan, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the Kosciuszko Bridge and the Alfred E. Smith Building in Albany be illuminated in pink.

Following Cuomo’s open celebration of the new law, which allows abortion to take place “at any time when necessary to protect a woman’s life or health,” Manhattan priest and author Fr. George Rutler observed, “The ancient Caesars dressed in red as the token of victory. Cuomo chose pink.”

Such brazen rebellion against the Church’s teachings on human life have prompted many Church leaders and lay people to call for Cuomo’s excommunication, which would prevent the governor from receiving communion and other sacraments until he repents of his sins. The goal of excommunication is to humble the sinner and move him to turn from practices that jeopardize his salvation.

Incredible Video Shows Unborn Babies Jumping Around, Waving, Yawning and Sucking Their Thumb

By Maria Gallagher
Life News

Late Tuesday night, a friend sent me a Facebook message. Too tired to read it, I waited until the following morning to view it. I was astounded.

What my friend had sent me was a video of a 4D ultrasound. Granted, it is not the first time I have seen such a video. But the image was mesmerizing nonetheless.

I could see one preborn baby jumping around with abandon. In another clip, a baby looked like he was waving. I saw a baby yawn and suck his thumb. What I saw, in short, was a human being showing off his humanity.

A video such as this can revolutionize the world. It provides a window into the hidden, amazing world of the preborn child. It is both informative and entertaining, and helps us to form a connection to a child that we might not otherwise have.

Technology can save the precious child in the womb. If every mother could see such a video in a supportive, loving atmosphere, how many more would choose life for their children?

Disturbing Reasons for Third Trimester Abortions Based on Eleven Cases

By Cheryl Sullenger
Operation Rescue

Wichita, KS — Women’s Health Care Services in Wichita, Kansas, was considered the largest late-term abortion facility outside Communist China at the time of its closure in 2009. Women literally came from all over the world for abortions that were illegal or unavailable in their home state or country.

Its owner, George Tiller, was respected among abortion supporters as the nation’s pre-eminent specialist in abortions throughout all nine months of pregnancy. In fact, Tiller developed the Induction Abortion procedure — a modification of the now-banned Partial Birth Abortion procedure — that is used today by nearly all abortionists that openly conduct “terminations” in the third trimester of pregnancy.

But Kansas wasn’t without gestational limits on abortion. The laws at that time barred abortions at 22 weeks or later unless a second unaffiliated physician agreed that the abortion was necessary to save the life of the mother or if the continued pregnancy would cause “substantial and irreversible impairment to a major bodily function of a woman.”

How Lack of Fertility Awareness Relates To Infertility Rates

by Gabriella Patti, Natural Womanhood

A recent study conducted by the Morning Consult for theNew York Times shows that the U.S. birthrate has declined significantly due to various economic and social factors. The study focused on young adults and indicates that younger generations are having fewer children for reasons ranging from a lack of economic stability to a desire for independence.

The United States has gradually slowed to the rest of the world’s declining birthrate, but the reasoning behind our concerning, but predictable decline goes beyond the factors considered in the Times’ report. As Anna Almendrala wrote for the Huffington Post, one factor not considered, but shockingly relevant, is that young people are unaware of when their fertility actually begins to decline. Furthermore, many young adults have placed their trust in modern technological methods of conceiving such as IVF.

But there’s reason to believe that many women are overestimating the effectiveness of these methods after a certain age. With economic factors being one of the top listed concerns, it’s important to note that on top of its unpredictability, IVF treatments cost approximately $12,000, and donor eggs and surrogacy cost even more.
