Volunteer, Make a Difference ...Hopefully Save a Life

A student-led pro-life group is hosting its third annual "National Pro-Life Sidewalk Day" on Saturday. Those involved hope to convince women heading into abortion clinics to change their minds, turn around, and leave.

Matt Lamb, spokesman for Students for Life of America, acknowledges that many people participate in sidewalk counseling regularly. But this event, he says, offers a unique opportunity for those volunteers to come together with students and community members across the nation all on the same day.

Lamb encourages any pro-life person or group to volunteer. "... We're looking to do sidewalk counseling and to reach out to people who are in need," he explains. "... You can sign up on our website and we have some recordings and trainings you can do – and we have great staff that will be happy to train you or your group to have a successful sidewalk day."

The pro-life group argues that the "turnaround rate" is much higher when someone considering an abortion is counseled by those who look like peers. "It's easier always to talk to someone who's your own age than talk to someone who's older or younger," Lamb adds.

The SFLA website offers a list of basic "do's and don'ts" for successful sidewalk counseling, such as DO pray for guidance, have compassion, and show each woman you care about her – not just the child; and DON'T yell, appear grumpy, socialize, or carry signs.

The website also identifies the following locations for Saturday's observance: Granite City, IL; Houston, TX; San Antonio, TX; Austin, TX; Aurora, IL; and San Jose, CA.
