The 218th NJ Legislature was sworn into office on Tuesday, January 9th and the new Governor will be sworn in on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. The Democrats now control all three branches of NJ Government, with huge majorities in both the Assembly and Senate.
First, the good news.
A1686/S537, the NJ Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act was reintroduced in both Houses of the Legislature. The prime sponsors of the Assembly bill (A1686) are Asm. Ronald Dancer and Asm. Tony Bucco. The bill is co-sponsored by Asm. Bob Auth, Erik Peterson, Parker Space, John DiMaio, Sean Kean, Michael Carroll and Asw. Betty LouDeCroce.
The prime sponsors of the Senate bill (S537) are Senator Steve Oroho and Senator Joe Pennacchio. Co-sponsors are Senator Tony Bucco and Senator Mike Doherty.
On the negative side, several other bills were reintroduced which should be opposed immediately. Please contact your two State Assembly Members and State Senator and urge them to Vote No on these bills:
A1656/S105, Provides taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood through medicaid funds. (This bill was consistently vetoed by Governor Christie during his time in office)
A2134/S120, Makes FY 2018 supplemental appropriation of $7,453,000 in taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood (This bill was consistently vetoed by Governor Christie during his time in office)
A1704/S482, Gestational Carrier Agreement (This bill was twice vetoed by Governor Christie)
A1504, the Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act - This bill will legalize Physician Assisted Suicide in NJ. This bill previously passed the Assembly twice, but the Senate did not vote on it due to a lack of a few votes. A Senate version has not yet been filed, but is expected to be filed shortly.
A1734/S708, Requires all NJ Health insurance plans to cover abortion.
