The national group calling for leniency in a Schuylkill County assisted suicide case may be angling to advance a pro-euthanasia agenda, a commonwealth pro-life advocate said Tuesday.

Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation Executive Director Michael Ciccocioppo said Compassion & Choices, the end-of-life advocacy group that has offered itself up as an expert witness for the Barbara Mancini assisted suicide case, has ulterior motives.

“The only reason they're targeting Pennsylvania is that they believe we might be vulnerable,” said Ciccocioppo. “What they really want is for the attorney general [Kathleen Kane] to do what she did with the [ban on gay] marriage law.”

Earlier this year Kane refused to defend the state's gay marriage ban, arguing that it was unconstitutional. And Ciccocioppo said he believes Compassion & Choices officials think it can convince her to do the same in the Mancini case.

“They're thinking that if they can get her to do the same thing on assisted suicide that gets them closer to full blown euthanasia here and then the nation,” he said.

In February, Mancini admitted giving her 93-year-old father, Joe Yourshaw, a lethal dose of morphine. She was charged with assisting a suicide by Schuylkill County authorities, who subsequently referred the case to the attorney general because of a potential conflict.
