"The fool wonders, the wise man asks," said British statesman Benjamin Disraeli.
I came to the pro-life movement with many questions. When does life really begin? Are positive alternatives to abortion really viable? What has been the impact of abortion on women?
It was in the vast storehouse of knowledge that pro-lifers offer that I found answers to these questions, and many more. I came to see that the pro-life position reflects true wisdom and true compassion.
Science showed me that life begins at the moment of conception. Any point later than that would be an arbitrary marker. I learned that adoption is a truly loving alternative to abortion. I also learned that, through comprehensive support, many women can be empowered to choose to parent their children.
I also heard from women who regret their abortions. They experienced a multitude of problems, from depression to drug addiction, from alcohol abuse to anxiety. They were also left to grieve children who had been lost to abortion.
Understanding is the beginning of wisdom. When I began to understand the effects of abortion on society in general and on women and girls in particular, I became convinced of the wisdom of the culture of life.
May this wisdom be passed onto our children and grandchildren, so that generations hence can be protected from the scourge of abortion.
